Son of a Bitch, I was headed to the air races and put it off until tomorrow.A P51 went into the spectator seats in front of the grandstand. Looked awfully close to where I sometimes sit.

Geez when I heard that I had to get on and make sure you were ok....I am so sorry to hear about the fatalities.

Is that right, the pilot was 80 years old?

The pilot was 74, in perfect health, been air racing since 1975.

3 confirmed dead, 54 injuries at this time, press conference just ended.

Holy Crap.. That is just awful for everyone involved, from the victims all the way to the air race organizers. What a terrible loss. Prayers for all the people either dead and injured.

Unfortunate but sometimes people die doing dangerous things. He died doing what he loved. Being a spectator does not rule out the possiblity of suffering dire consequenses.

You are absolutely correct Tommy. I was thinking this same thing at the Baltimore Grand Prix. I was watching people stand right along side parts of the course that were in direct line of a 180mph Indy Car and the only thing between them and the car was a chain link fence and a jersey barrier. Chances are nothing will ever go wrong but there is always that odd chance that someone is in the path of fate. It is a risk that everyone takes when participating in these kind of events. I hope they don't vilify the Air Races now.

Too true. Makes you appriciate SCCA corner workers, those in the hot pits, etc.

But you either live life or sit on the porch.

I've been upside down in an open wheeled car @100mph waiting for the impact.

Standing on the pit wall with a pit board, you could touch a racecar as it goes by, had a big tail section from a D Sports Racer fly off the car and miss me by 2 feet.

I was lucky both times.

I've seen vids of a Formula 1 speed boat going off course, up the bank and into the crowd.

Most venues are fairly safe though.

Still safer than driving on the freeways.

Yea, of course some will try.
The idiot reporters were asking about the future of the races at the news conference. Reporters are so stupid,

I think they will persevere.

I didn't go yesterday only because it was windy, didn't want to sit in the stands in the wind all day. And it's supposed to be nice today with a 5 mph breeze.

If they have the races next year, I'll go,

During the air show I went to in August, one of the sky walkers fell off the wing and died.

I guess these accidents are more common than I thought?

Still sad regardless.

It is. Look at the side it is number 177, the number of the plane that crashed.

The plane in the tragedy was modified for racing. All the pictures I have seen of P51's show rounded corners on the tail. Here is a list of P51 survivors including the ill fated "Galloping Ghost".

None of the P51's are "factory stock" , Joe. Everyone of them has been highly modified for aerodynamics, so the tails are different.
Most of them have wings that are 3-5 feet shorter on each side, etc.

And engine power is 2x the origional.

Cool site, Joe.

I don't think the pic of the Ghost is the same config as 2011. I read somewhere that for 2011, there were extensive mods to the Ghost including shortening the wings.

It's been a a while but I saw an origional sitting beside a racer in the pits, big difference.

FYI - Pilots must pass some very rigorous and frequent health exams. Those that fly Unlimiteds also have to qualify for an additional license. It is unlikely that his age had anything to do with this accident.

If you have ever had the opportunity to talk with a fighter/racer pilot especially those that are still flying you should note their obvious clarity and sharp minds. The same goes for those that fly air racers. These guys are way outside the performance box for their "age". And when they have lost their edge, they retire without debate.

Loosing elevator control on a Unlimited, makes for very unstable flight controls. That answers the question for his last attempt gain control.

I am still surprised that his fuel did not ignite.

Thankfully, thankfully.....
