Yesterday I drove (if you can call it driving) for 3hrs in traffic..... total distance traveled..... 24 miles.

Now I was pretty patient, there was a gun show in town down in Fredricksburg VA and really wanted to go. Fredricksburg is about 35 miles from my house - So as you can see I did not make it there yesterday.

The final straw was when I got off I-95 in Stafford Va and started down Route 1, Jefferson Davis Hwy. I ended up sitting still for 20 mins right next to where some land developer is building a new housing development.... Town Houses.... Just what this area needs more F'N people to move here.

BTW I did manage to go to the gun show today.... only took me 1.5hrs to drive the 35 miles.....

Stay out of California you can't even have a nice cruise on a back road there.

Avoid the beltway - more for the politicians - than the traffic.

The traffic here is starting to piss me off and there's only 300,000 people in Reno.

To a point, Cali traffic isn't the problem... It's LA Traffic that sucks.

Also, SF traffic SUPER sucks. I can't speak for San Diego.

My new job is 13.5 miles away. My problem isn't the freeway... it's that lousy 1 mile of town street here in San Pedro. There are three traffic lights on this street, and it leads to the street that takes me to the 110 freeway. I have spent 20 minutes on this street of a work morning. From there, I can be at my office in 10 minutes. Sick, isn't it?

Oh, I am moving against traffic, that's why the freeway moves so well for me.

My old job was 3.5 miles away from my house. My commute was entirely on surface streets... and it took 20 minutes to get there. New math gives me a headache.

This is why I will not move to a bigger city. I drove through Nashville yesterday and one of the main highways was closed. My house is 11mi from work and it takes an average of 15min to drive. This is to the downtown area too.

Its another reason I live where I do......Even Lincoln traffic can get me pounding the wheel and cursing......My daughter who lived in Orange County once said, out here in Nebraska we sometimes have to consider the weather if we want to go somewhere.....out in LA you always have to consider what the traffic will be like.....

Miami traffic sucks. Always in the top 10 of worst traffic. I'm lucky I live 35 miles southwest of the madness. Homested traffic is bearable but I remember when there were only 25k people. Now 60k. Used to be 4-6 cars at a traffic light. Now 20-40. The .4 miles I travel to the nursery is easy peasy. If I have to drive uptown for a delivery it's 1.5 to 2 hrs to go 30 to 40 miles during the week. 30 to 40 minutes on Sat/Sun.

I suppose I can't complain, the only time I really have issues with traffic is during race weekends.

Southwest VA drivers are a PITA though.  violent1

I agree, Columbia is great. I live in the city limits and can get anywhere in the city in fifteen minutes...and that's WITH traffic. Takes me 4 - 5 minutes to get to work in the morning, 7 - 8 to get home because traffic is thick.

I drove Miami to Boston a couple of times. The nightmares encountered were DC and NYC. I got to NYC at 04:00 PM. Just bad timing on my part. I got out of NYC around 08:00 PM. By far the worst part of my drive. Miami to Beantown is about a 26 hour run. At least that's how long it took me. Now I fly and rent a car. Can't handle long road trips anymore. I now enjoy breakfast in Miami and lunch in Boston. Or lunch in Miami and dinner in Vegas. No more days on the road only to fall asleep when I get to my destination. 6 hours driving is my preferred max now. Easley SC is 13 hours by car. Less than a two hour flight. So 5 1/2 to 6 hours after I leave the house, I'm sitting in the living room in SC. Since I moved here though I haven't been doing much traveling. This house is my mission.

I like Manhattan. Nothing like being in the belly of the beast. People watching is where it's at. Millionaires walking amoung beggars and thieves and everything in between. Loads of fun and plenty of great food. And the trains; you have to ride the trains. Nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

I'm 90 minutes from NYC and the ONLY way to go is by train out of Trenton NJ. You cant drive in NYC anyway unless its in a beater....nearly every car has body damage. Cheaper to Cab it once you are there. I have to drive past it in September for a Guitar building class in Brattleboro VT....hope i can get around it!

I don't know how many of you know the LA freeway system, but I have gained a very intimate knowledge of it over the last 8 years!

My first job was with FEMA in Pasadena. That's about 35 miles north of where I lived at the time. My start time? 0430!

I would wake at 0315, then hit the road at 0330. It was a straight shot up the 110 and I was in my parking garage. From my door, across 4 miles of city streets to the 110, shoot up to the end of the freeway, and a couple of miles of downtown Pasadena to the garage. 45 minutes... done and done! It was a delight. An absolute joy of a commute. Got off work at either 1300 or 1400, depending on what the schedule was.

Get home, grab a quick nap, go out, play some trivia or whatever, then hit the hay by about 2000 or 2100 at the latest.

My son works about 45 miles away from his home. He works from 11:00 to 19:30. He cruises to work without issue. Makes it in an hour tops. Off peak hours makes a radical difference in commute times.

Andy I remember once we were in Costa Mesa and had to be at LAX for a 7 am flight. We left at 5 am and I was sure the 405 was going to be empty.......wrong again, it was packed and we were lucky we did not have any big traffic slow ups but did not have any time to spare and just made the flight.....we were big time newbs in LA...

the 405 starts to fill at 0500!!!

And Costa Mesa is a drive for LAX. Good thing you left 2 hours for the drive.

I used to work in Irwindale... where the 210 and 605 meet. I had to drop bastet off at LAX for an early morning flight. I left LAX at 6:15... up the 105 to the 605 to the 210, off at Irwindale Blvd, stopped for bfast at the McDonalds... 30 minutes. The secondary freeways take a while to back up.
