I thought I'd share and hope you enjoy...

I had small a collision in the C5 a few weeks ago. It was at less than 20mph and no one was hurt.

But since the insurance company was paying to redo the front clip and had it disassembled, I decided to go ahead and have the rest of the car disassembled and repainted since it was already suffering from two less-than-primo paint jobs.

My car was orignally black (back when I was the second owner). Then it was a gaudy metallic silver; then it was white.

This time around I am going with a Lexus pearl white...done right! (i.e. strip, prime, seal, base coat, pearl, clear coat, color sand)

This guy got in my way:

A few parts are back-ordered. If they arrive this week, hopefully, next week will be re-assembly and final paint.

I'll post more pics as progress continues.

That's the best part of the C5, they come apart like an old Citreon... pretty cool stuff.

I am liking that paint job. It is SO vivid!! Can't wait to see it.

When? 2 more weeks?

If replacements for these parts (cracked "aprons" that support the brake cooling ducts) come in by this Friday, I may be picking up the car in time for the party.

Yea, I was gonna ask the same thing.

But then, I didn't invite anyone to Hot August Nights either.

Yes, there is a party, but you must come to San Pedro. I don't see anyone doing this.

Looking forward to seeing it!!!

Holy disassembly, Batman! I never knew the C5 body panels could be removed like that...very cool.

Look forward to seeing the results.

A little tech talk about the C5... it's no so much a body of frame or even a monocoque... it's none of that... it's a frame with an assemblage of parts screwed, glued or welded to it!

The C4 has a frame, yes, all Corvette do, but each generation has been a bit different.

C1, C2, and C3 are about the same. A ladder frame with a body bolted to it. The body had a "birdcage" that supported and provided (minimal) crash protection. This is also why you see those little cracks in the bodywork, it's old fashioned fibreglass, and it just isn't as strong. The frame flexes one way, the body the other... and cracks form over time.

The body material was changed to SMC in the late 70s, I think. I don't know exectly when, but the C4 was made of it for sure. And it's much stouter, it is structural... the old stuff wasn't.

The C4 has a frame, that was made if many pieces of steel welded together. this frame was integrated with a firewall, a-pillar and b-pillar (halo) structures. The body was physcially bonded to that structure. The rear storage bin was one piece and was bonded to the rear fenders and inner doors, rocker panel covers, etc... the hood, top and doors are stressed members, as is the rear fenders and the storage bin. So is the windshield.

The C5 and C6 are even odder... the frame is 2 pieces of hydroformed something - steel or aluminium, depending on version. The a-frame and halo are welded to this structure, along with the firewall. There is also a trans tunnel for the torque tube, and it is stressed, AFAIK.

After that, the rear tub goes in for the storage bin, but as you can see, the body work is not stressed. On the C5 and C6, all the rigidity comes from the frame. The skin does nothing.

Part of the reasoning was to cut down on repair costs for minor accidents. Hell, you hit the hood on a C4 today, you could easily total it! $4k isn't unheard of. This is why the hood cannot be broken. It is stressed, and as such, if hairline cracks are introduced, they will spiderweb everywhere under the paint and eventually cause the hood to fracture. cutting is safe, it hasn't damaged the grain of the material.

The floor on the C5/6 is very interesting. It is two sheets of thin fibreglass material, with a slab of balsa wood pressed inside. The entire floor is only 6mm thick or so, bu the strength and quiet is amazing. I had an RC car chassis back in the 90s that was made the exact same way and it was RIGID. If you tried to bend it by hand, good luck. It was that stiff. It simply did not bend.

The C5/6 has this magnesium casting that spans the 2 doors and supports the dashboard structure. It also supports the steering column.

Now, as good as all of this is... the C5/6 so have some weaknesses... Mostly in the C5, but if you overpower them, don't expect the trans or differential to take it for very long. Either automatic or manual will shatter cases, same with the rear diff. there are kits out there that will reinforce them, but it doesn't change the fact that the castings are junk.

I have seen several pictures over the years of shattered C5 diff housings, it isn't pretty.

When it comes down to it, the old ZF6 and D44 combo are really tough to beat. Sure, you can break either, but neither are noted for long term duribility issues, or, fragging once 500hp is applied. I didn't say the D36, those will munch fast with a manual, but the D44 is pretty stout.

And yes, I have seen a few D44s break, but mostly it's aluminum half shafts twising like pretzels.

Haha, I almost joined that club some dozen years ago.

But instead of marriage, I opted to skip the wedding altogether and went straight to the divorce.

He didn't mention that he dated her again... off and on...

but I didn't say that...

Married, no kids.

As for the C6, Marcus, the standard diff is still the standard diff... get into the Z06 and ZR1, they are uprated, but the early Z06 had some rear end issues.

If I had a base C6 and wanted more power, I would add power, then install a Zxx diff and trans! And a ZR1 clutch.

Yep, Bill! Not only do I pay bills, I cook and clean, and fix stuff, and keep beer in a special fridge out back so you don't even have to come inside
When me and John divorced in 05 I paid his car insurance and cell for a year, I'd bought him a used SUV that he totaled, had to clean out my bank account a couple of times as he couldn't keep a job (was a shitty cop)... The first one cost me a bunch in credit card bills that I didn't know my name was on and part of a Mustang GT (apparently me buying a Vette while he was away hunting pissed him off)... the last 'involvement' was a lot of goodness all around on my part but I at least got the $1500 loan back, although obviously on the short end of the stick so to speak on other things, like all that stuff I needed done to the car.... I can thank his crack whore employee for that...

Not to worry. I'm stopping by the body shop on my way down to San Diego this afternoon to drop off some HID headlight and fog lamp kits, and to get a status update.

I'll post new pics later and get this thread back on topic... or not!

feel free to post pics of said activities, and the rest of us will sit back and have a beer while we look at them...

one day I want to have a nice garage with a 4' lift and I can have one of those cook spekledy floors, yellow walls with a waving racing flag all around, a red ceiling, aluminum diamond plate trim lights with red plexi frames, diamond plate cabinetry, a bar, nice tv, cool fridge and stools... and a nice comfy house with a pool.
And did I mention I know my way around a BBQ grill also....
aint too much I can't do including home repairs, carpet, carpentry work, drywall, etc....
so - why am I still single... maybe I'm just a snot and keep all the beer to myself?

That's a whole lot to digest. Maybe it's because I'm drinking a beer myself. Or maybe it's because you are. Either way, CHEERS!

What sucks is you have to go through "The first nick" thing all over again. An then there is the run you never noticed before. You won't find it for a month or two.

...all of the above.

Thanks folks!

This coming week:
Wet sand and buff (I think?)
Tear down/re-assemble front clip (still missing parts under the bumper cover)
Re-align all the body panels
Install trim and etc and etc and etc

Hoping to pick up my ride on Friday

More to follow...

That should take care of "The first nick" issue.

Or maybe one of youse fancy moderator/admin types can change the thread title?

Actually, I still haven't picked up the car. I think the guy got busy with other things and is trying to not rush mine. He knows I'm anxious even though I told him to take his time. I do know he wants to get paid though. Seems the biggest issue (for him) is cleaning up a lot of the over-spray from previous two paint jobs (and actually re-painting where clean-up isn't sufficient, like in the wheel wells). He's doing this as he goes along with each piece. So it's not one big job of cleaning over-spray, then one big job of re-assembly (He dis-assembled the car again after it came out of the paint booth).
