OK, I've been sick for the past 3 weeks, but today I made good progress, unfortunately I did not pick up a damper puller so that is where I stopped,

I did check the AC Condenser that I bought it it is @ 1.0" thick and the stock condenser is 1.75-2.0 thick

Everything is stripped down except the damper and cover, I'll grab a puller and get the cam out on Thursday or Friday

6 of one and 1/2 dozen of the other, had to drain the coolant because of the water pump, had to take the front of the engine off anyway, did not have to pull the headers and y-pipe by leaving it in.

By Thursday I should have the cam in a box and on its way back to Bullet in Mississippi.

Stupid crap really makes me mad,,, the timing cover is new and the seal is leaking because the timing cover is a cheap stamping type cover and teh front seal hole is slightly off center and was not sealing at the 9, 12 and 3 o'clock areas, so the hole is off center towards the bottom of the engine, rubbing only in the bottom 1/3 of the gasket.

Anyway, I pulled the hub today during lunch and took the cover off.

All I need to do is take the timing chain off and hook some thin welding rod onto the lifters to pull them up away from the cam without the lifters coming out, then slip the cam out.

Also, I am contemplating using 1.52 rockers on the intake side with 1.6's on the exhaust side, anyone have any experiences with this?

My buddy ol'Rj does this, he tried the 1.52's on the intake and then the exhaust and his track results showed that using them in the intake probably allowed for better scavenging using the 1.6's on the EXH.

That was common on TPI cams, but depending on what cam you are running since it is aftermarket, not necessary.

Had a long talk with Bullet Cams yesterday, flat out great people! They will take the time to talk with you if you need.

Regarding the split ration rockers, they said yes, when using the AFR heads, the EXH ratio inefficiency is very good, so slowing down the rocker with the 1.5 will actually boost the TQ in stead of using a 1.6's on the EXH. This was exactly my thought, on accident of course, but I knew the AFR EXH flow efficiency we @ 85% based on my flow charts, so there was no need to leave it open as long, and by using a .612" lift on the Intake, this helps the top end but sacrifices some low end TQ. Since I have 210cc heads, I did not want to kill anymore of my HP than necessary.

This does not affect the timing events, only the speed of the open and close of the valve and the lift. So, I'll be using 1.52-Exh & 1.6-Intake on the new cam

Cam specs are;
228/234 @ .050
284/289 @ .006
114 CL
.3825 lobe x 1.60 = .612"
.3825 lobe x 1.52 = .581"
Overlap at .050 = 3*
Overlap at .006 = 58.50*

So of the stuff came below and the cam will be ground this week and be back in my grimy hands next week.

I put those same rocker covers on my 84. Nice for the $$$, with one gripe... I wish they didn't cut the breather holes at the factory... I prefer to have both breathers at the front of the engine.

The cam lobes they are sending you sound good. Short advertised duration with a lot of lift. That's good for matching up driveability and power. I personally don't think you need the lobe centers spread out that far (114) but all it will do is make the power curve more gradual and hold on longer at the expense of some low/midrange. I'd expect it to drive very good on the street.

Thanks Will, I'm pumped about getting it back on the road, I only drive it @ 2 months last year, it spent 3 months at paint, and 3 months at tune.

I was able to do 3 legs of the Hot Rod Power Tour before the paint and tune, so this year it should be all driving on road time with my son, he turns 15 so I get to teach him more about quality 60's & 70's rock & roll music :-)

Side tip...check with the cam company to see what distributor gear they recommend. I had to use a composite nascar distributor drive gear $$$ with my comp cam.

I agree.....
I've done C4 cam head swaps with the engine in the car a couple of times and then with the engine out. Now I just pull the engine. In my case at least, I can get it done quicker and easier by pulling the engine. Your experience may be different

Should button it up Saturday, very close, just been short on time. It's been off the road since August.

All I need to do is put ion the radiator, AC Condenser, Compressor, coolant and put valve covers on and fire it up,

FAST program should be fine the way it is, but I'll check it out after I road test and look for leaks, re-tighten bolts etc.

This could be the first year I am caught up on all of the mods I have wanted to do, I just might become a, a, a, WAXER!

Fire in the hole!

It kicked over on the first try, darn I'm getting good.

But,,,,I still need to put the valve covers on, But,,, I'm too tired to spend another hour on it, Oil pressure was @ 60-psi

Next I'll let it idle and check the fans and get hot, look for leaks, burp the radiator, then shut it off and let it cool down...

I'll post a video of the idle when I get the covers put on.

Personally I wish that all petroleum based products had a nice smell added.

Imagine you build engines, transmissions or rear ends every day....

Would you rather go home smelling like:

(1) Mint (Lucas assembly lube)

(2) 3 day old cat piss (GM positraction additive)

LD85 -

I think the car sounds pretty good at idle....

Maybe it's up a little bit too high on the idle RPM.

You can always crank in a few degrees extra timing advance and lower the idle target RPM which will accentuate the "lick" at idle....

I'd imagine with 36* advance and a target idle RPM of 850 it would sound pretty darn good.
