I've been toying with the idea of reproducing the Grand Sport fender flares for a while now and finally found someone with the skills, facilities and interest to possibly pursue it. Injection molding is out as the initial startup costs are astronomical. However, fiberglass flares using multiple molds and hand finished might be feasible depending on demand and pricing. I know what few originals are still out there are going for $500+ a set when you can find them. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be a realistic price for repos? I know the proper way to do this would be to estimate material cost and labor, then price accordingly. But I'm thinking that if they can't be sold for $200 or less a set, there wouldn't be much interest anyway. TIA..

For what they're commanding, now that GM has ceased making them, I'd think there'd be a helluva demand for them at a reasonable price. For a well done set, I don't think most people would mind even $250. I'd say 95% of buyers could give a flying f*** if they're originals or not, as long as they look good and fit.

I was planning to use a set of the originals for the molds and the finish quality would be at least as good. They'd ship primed ready for paint with both the mounting screws and the double-sided tape the originals came with..

Are there any licensing issues if using the GM part for the mold master?

I don't know if I'd actually buy a set, but $200-250 seems reasonable and I'm sure they would sell well.

I don't know for sure. There have been a number of threads at the other place but no consensus. I'd of course, check that out but from talking to a good friend whose family is in the manufacturing business and who is familiar with this sort of thing, it's unlikely that there would be a problem. I guess the easiest thing to do would be to contact a company already making aftermarket replacement parts (i.e. exact replica carbon fiber hoods and other body parts) and see what kind of hoops, if any, would have to be jumped through...

EDIT: I would think that as long as I did not advertise them as GM parts and say, made sure the GM part number and logo weren't on them, that would be ok...

I'd also try to reproduce the rear export lower flares that fit under the side molding. I always thought that something looked incomplete with just the main wheel flare:

I would agree. I think you would sell plenty at $200 - more at $150, if you could swing that.

Good luck. There seems to be a growing demand for these.

The Japan spec cars left the factory with the same flares as seen on the GS since way back, there are a few C4s over here that have them, most are removed.

That's because nobody makes them. The only sets I see are occasionally on eBay or in the CF Parts for Sale section. As for the left side still being in stock and the right side discontinued, that's been the situation for at least the past year. And what's with that? Why wouldn't both be still around or neither be still around? Why just the one side? I don't get it...

I don't know anything about moldmaking but I had a hunch that might work. However, I've got no problem springing for a complete set if it makes the process easier...

I reckon it would, cause if you look at my dash parts, the A/C vents, around the radio, and also the top pad, youll see they are mirrored, and they are all made of fibreglass,
[web]http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a185/Casethecorvetteman/My%20cars/2007%20Classic/2007show8.jpg[/web]

So i reckon if they can do that pretty well, it should be doable to make some flares that are almost the same on both sides

Someone just mentioned in that thread that they're available at the Grand Sport Registry. Sure enough, they are but they're $460-$510 depending on whether you're a member or not:

I wouldn't give up on the idea based on that thread, just using it as reference. Why not see how much it would cost to produce them? I might even kick in half the price of a GM set, but I want a piece of the pie!

I'm definitely going to pursue it. I've got to get some pics and other info to the guy who said he could do it but in describing it to him, he didn't think it would be any kind of a big deal to reproduce them. The question is how much labor is involved in getting them to the "ready for paint" finished state...

Agreed from a practical standpoint mate, but this is a case of supply and demand. There are no new ones available and people want them in order to run the wide tires. The ones still around are bringing big bucks, go figure!

If you can buy the whole front bumper for under $500 from Hecklers of all places, there is no good reason why anyone should charge so much for these items.

9 out of 10 people over here are reluctant to buy a C4 with them on it!!!

If they are working on low volume hand laid fiberglass, I can see the $500. I think it's supply and demand though. If you have a good volume going, making them out of carbon fiber should cost about $500.

tobi, I'd look into it still. I was thinking about it too myself. I have a great fiberglass company about 45 minutes from me. Looks like I may have been a little late though. Let us know what you plan. I've got an 88 vert here that could use a pair to hide the 11s we are putting on it.

UPDATE:

Because of some stuff that came up at the last moment, I didn't have a chance to sit down and discuss the project with the guy I had in mind. However, from the pictures and links to a few previous CF threads regarding the flares I had emailed him, he didn't see why this couldn't be done for a reasonable cost. Hopefully next Monday we'll the opportunity to go over some of the details and then have a better idea as to whether $200 a set flares are possible. However, based on his initial assessment, the chances are pretty good that we'll be moving forward on this sooner rather than later...

Yes, I know but they're $500 a pair. I'm talking about equal quality at less than half the price. And if I can find a set, I'm also planning on reproducing those lower flares that fit under the body molding. (see my post above with the yellow C4)...

Mate ive asked around a couple people over here and no one knows of anyone that keeps them, and seems most of them do come straight off the Japan spec cars when they get here along with the gun metal grey duco and go straight in the bin, then the car is painted a different colour.

You can count me in for a pair, especially if you can do that rear flair part too. Would be nice to have those on to keep the rubber from the slicks getting all over the side of the Vette. :thumbright:

UPDATE:

I finally had a chance to talk with the guy who I was considering partnering with on this project and it looks like if we want to keep the cost at $250 a set for the upper flares, we'd probably end up making about $40-50 an hour for our labor. That does not include the startup costs (purchasing an original set of flares, equipment, mold material, etc: $1500+), startup labor (actually creating the molds and production setup: 30-40 hours) and any subsequent promotional or marketing expenses (i.e. website, advertising, member discounts, etc). Obviously, this would have to be a labor of love. On top of that, there are a few guys over at CF making some noise about producing them as well, possibly out of aluminum or steel. I'm going to wait a few more months and see if anything comes of that before I move forward on this. Personally, I think that $250 is about as much as a rational human being should pay for fender flares and a recent experience bidding on a set on eBay reinforces this belief (I was the high bidder at $250 and it was the third time they'd been up for auction - obviously, the market has them priced no higher). I'll keep everyone informed...
