on one of those 'red top' batteries - GEEZ LOUIZE!!!!!! Never got one before and everyone recommended them. Are they really worth that extra $100?
And it's STILL hard to start... |

DIE HARD
WAL-MART All work great too. I'm using a battery I got at Autozone several years ago and it is still doing great. I keep it on a battery tender to keep it fresh. |

I can't see myself ever spending big bucks on a battery. Wal-Mart is good enough. I've owned Die-Hard and never had any trouble. A couple Interstates have given me just a bit of trouble, but would buy another if Wal-Mart didn't have what I needed...
10% discount since the wife works there. 'Nuff said. |

They are not worth it. I did a yellow top a few years ago and it ran the car audio stuff good with out dying but after 3 years the battery was toast.

The optima batteries (or other gel cel types) are primarily good for two things:
1. Safety - they are full of gel instead of liquid so acid doesn't spray all over you if the battery is ruptured in a crash 2. Deep cycle - for cars that aren't driven much, or any car where the battery isn't regularly charged. If you discharge a battery enough times (let it sit and suck the juice out of it) it will destroy it. A deep cycle battery can recover from a full discharge more often than a normal one. If you don't need either of those things, you don't need a red top. |

I thought the yellow or blue tops were for deep cycling?
They are also good for off-road or racing because they take the vibrations and hits better than a liquid battery, and give more more mounting options, in the car, under the car, etc. |

Could be. I never really looked at what the colors pertain to. I don't use an Optima. Perhaps the red tops are just an entry level gel cel. I didn't figure that pertained in this case... Quote:

BTW, I don't think they are worth it. A lot of folks buy a good battery with a good warranty and just get 'em replaced for free/discount if they go bad Matthew |

Spiral wound batteries are great at handling g-loads at the track. I've seen conventional batteries died because the plates have warped.
