I figured with the economy failing as bad as it is, we can have a friendly competition.

My 401K lost 24.2% in the last year, and my house lost 21% value (per zillow.com).

Ok now, who's got me beat?

I went to dinner with $38.00 in my pocket.

I now have $0.43 left.

Beat that.

I lost my $105,000 job this morning DIRECTLY because my company's bank is holding off financing our continuing projects (I'm a Construction Site Superintendant for a condo development firm.) That may or may not equal 24.2% of your 401......but still.

Fixed it for ya!

My strategy for not losing money in the stock market is simple: I'm poor, so I don't put any money in the stock market.

I went to Zillow.com, pretty cool site. I found my house. It says mine went down $7,000 last month! ouch!!!

My House

Hope we see some good stuff happening soon!!

EDIT: Actually I made a mistake.. a good one. It says my house went back up $7,000 over the past 30 days! Awesome! Now I'm happy again.

That site is showing my house which appraised for 130K less than a year ago at 94K. BUT its also showing the wrong square footage. Its off 500 SQFT!! EDIT: I made some honest adjustments (I did alot work myself so I guessed at what it would have cost me if I paid someone)

My house is down $120k in the last 2 years.

I've been following Zillow for 3 years. A lot of times they're not very accurate. Back when houses were selling, they were sometimes $100k off what a house sold for here.

If you want to take a look at others:
eppraisal.com
homegain.com
realestate.yahoo.com

But they're just a accurate as Zillow.

I feel it, brother.... been there, done that.

When I moved out here, I was out of work for 15 months. It was a literal disaster that saved our bacon - Katrina.

I interviewed... then would never hear back... ever... nada... it was a black hole. I would contact the head hunters and they acted like they didn't care anymore... well, I don't think it was acting.

The entire experience was very depressing.

My favourite was a programming job with the courts... yea... mainframe, something called "ADABAS/Natural." I have 8 years of criminal justice information experience... and 15 years of ADABAS/Natural... and those people never even called. THAT hurt.

I really wish you the best, Ron. I do. Something good will break. The economy is under stress, crime rates will go up and they will need more people like you.

The housing market is going to get crushed right now. I am sorry you are getting crushed with it.

I am sure with your management experience, something good will happen.

Keep the faith!!! I know it's tough... been there... but as bad is it gets, it can only get better.

As I said in the post above, I was out of work for 15 months. That was rough... and at times depressing as hell, but I kept a positive attitude... the economy here in 2000 through 2005 was horrible for computer related positions. I didn't know that until AFTER I moved!!!

This is what I should have done, really, taken advantage of job retraining programs. I didn't do that... I would check into non-computer jobs and they wouldn't call me back, either. The bottom line? The perception that IT is a cash cow and that either I am really an idiot and can't get a job or, simply having a hard time and as soon as I get one, I would be gone. Little did they know...

I now have a great gig, in IT and wouldn't trade it... but then??

I was being positive - Corrections.

I was just reading where some guy in Porter Ranch (north L.A.), killed his family and himself because he was broke.

How tragic.

I won't even look at the numbers because it's irrelevant at this point. But after another shitty day on Wall St., no matter how much I was down before, I'm down some more now. I wish I'd have gotten out of stocks a year ago. No choice now but to ride it out.

That's right, "Stay the course".

Actually, it's never too late to cut your losses. Staying in the game just helps everyone else bailing out to a bite of your piece of the pie.

But for how long is the question, now.

Somewhat related - did you see that the FDIC changed their deposit guidelines until the end of 2009 to insure $250,000? I was talking to a teller at the bank today. Apparently it's to keep the older folks from withdrawing their money (think Great Depression).

There are some savings accounts out there paying 3.75% annual yields.

The stock market lost that much alone today. And yesterday too.
