Thanks for the offer! I'll keep that in my back pocket for now, and see what I can come up with. I'll probably wait until the spring and have the transmission checked out then, so I may not actually end up needing one if the issue is on the transmission end of the cable. Maybe something is out of whack there.

Thanks again for the help guys!

By the way, the 10215862 does appear to be the correct part number. According to one website, 10163848 was replaced by 10215862.

Now I just need to fine one.

Thanks guys!

Yes, topgechx6, I did do the ASR adjustment procedure on the car over the weekend. Don't think it made any difference though. I want to say that it "might" feel better now, but I had discovered the problem after taking the car down a dragstrip for the first time a couple of weekends ago, but I won't be back out to the track until next season, so I won't have a chance to check it out for sure. It only ran 14.30 - 14.50 ETs, when I'm sure it should be somwhere in the high thirteens. What I have found out too is that when cruising at speeds of around 45 mph, if I stomp it to the floor, the trans only kicks down to third gear, when it should grab second. And I know that it worked properly before I swapped out the ASR assembly.

I guess the problem might also be at the transmission end of the cable too.

Those are some stout numbers! You gotta' figure if it's laying down 434 at the wheels, flywheel HP has to be on the order of 500 +/-. Nicely done!

I'm wondering if there is a GM part number associated with the T.V. cable assembly for a 1992 Corvette (ASR-equipped) with an automatic transmission.

Earlier this year, in an attempt to fix my code H65 (ASR assembly fault), I bought a used ASR unit online. In the process of replacing it, I think I may have stretched my TV cable a bit. I recently discovered that my transmission isn't shifting properly under WOT. It runs through first and second just fine, but either skips 3rd altogether or doesn't hold it for very long, I can't really tell.

I'm going to try verifying that I have my ASR adjusted correctly per the FSM, but other than that, I think I may be looking at needing a new cable. This cable was only used on '92 and '93 model years, and are almost impossible to find. I figured having the GM part number on hand might help. I'll no doubt need to resort to the salvage market to find one.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Andy, this was the hose that goes between the EGR solenoid and the EGR valve itself? Just curious.

Their online exploded diagrams were indispensible, and their VIN/buildsheet lookup tool was very cool.

Well that just sucks.

This comment brings me to a question regarding storage. What's the consensus on changing oil just prior to storing the car? If I use a good quality synthetic, and if said oil has maybe 2,000 miles on it, is it still necessary to change it before storing? I know the reasoning behind it is because oils can sometimes have very slight acidic properties and you don't want that sitting in your engine all winter, but given the situation I've described, am I just wasting money?

Just thinking.

Well, we had BEAUTIFUL weather and a great turn out! Our club has some room for improvement for next year's event (better planning and communications), but for a bunch of folks who never put on a racing event such as this (we had a change of officers this year, so some of the people who ran the previous years events weren't as involved this year), I think we did a pretty good job and I think everyone went away fairly happy. Most importantly, I was really glad that the whole event came off safely, and there were no injuries or or property damage. Whew.

As soon as I get some things together, I'll post up the results and a few pics.

First time down a drag strip!

So after being a life-long drag racing fan, and making thousands of passes in my "Theatre Of The Mind", I finally made my very own first passes down a drag strip yesterday in my stock '92 LT1 coupe. I can see how people get addicted to this.

My club, the Crown Point Corvette Club (http://www.crownpointvettes.org) sponsored our Fourth Annual Corvette Shootout yesterday at No Limit Raceway in Morocco, IN. I didn't get into the money bracket competition (interesting story on that later), but I made four passes during the morning time trials/test-and-tune session.

My car has just about 69,000 miles and is an almost completely stock LT1/A4 with the following exceptions:

Professional Products 52mm TB
FIC Bosch III (0280 155 703) injectors
Custom ECM tune (basically just to accomodate the different flow rates of the injectors, plus slight timing adjustments)
Magnaflow high-flow cats.

I was holding the brake and bringing RPMs up to just about 1,700 or so to launch. Except for the third pass where I left it at idle and just stabbed it on the last yellow.

First pass:
R/T - .3021
60 FT - 2.0759
330 FT - 5.9747
1/8 Mile - 9.1708
1/8 Mile MPH - 75.99
1000 ft - 11.9758
1/4 Mile ET - 14.3360
1/4 Mile MPH - 31.68

Something must have screwed up the clocks on the top-end MPH. And I immediately knew at the end of the run why the ET was as low as it was. My tranny is basically shifting from second right into 4th (OD), so I'm losing a ton of pull from about half track on. I had replaced my ASR assembly back in the spring of this year, and in doing so, I think I buggered up my TV cable (stretched it out a bit). I did the whole ASR assembly adjustment procedure per the FSM, but I'm thinking there's still something not quite right now in that whole mechanism. In the lane next to me was another club member in a 2010 Grand Sport convertible. I was giving him a pretty good run right up until my car shifted out of 2nd, then he just started walking away.

Second pass:
R/T - .3688
60 FT - 2.1073
330 FT - 5.9812
1/8 Mile - 9.1751
1/8 Mile MPH - 75.89
1000 ft - 11.9821
1/4 Mile ET - 14.3443
1/4 Mile MPH - 95.93

Almost a carbon copy of the first pass. This time around, I put the trans in "D" as opposed to "OD", thinking it might make a differece in holding on to third gear. No dice. Another club member in a C5 convertible (who later ended up winning the entire bracket competition) was in the right lane and he smoked me but good right out of the box and all the way down the track.

Third pass:
R/T - .2529
60 FT - 2.1381
330 FT - 6.0950
1/8 Mile - 9.411
1/8 Mile MPH - 72.21
1000 ft - 12.2760
1/4 Mile ET - 14.6771
1/4 Mile MPH - 96.34

What the heck? Pass three was made about an hour or so after pass two. The weather did get quite a bit warmer during that time, and I also made this pass in the right lane, where the first two were in the left. But wow, what a drop off in performance. What was weird is that my ET went down, but my trap speed went up. Better reaction time too. I'm starting to get this tree figured out a bit.

Fourth and final pass:
R/T - .0011
60 FT - 2.2558
330 FT - 6.1471
1/8 Mile - 9.4058
1/8 Mile MPH - 73.53
1000 ft - 12.2178
1/4 Mile ET - 14.5930
1/4 Mile MPH - 97.80

NAILED the tree!! I actually ended up deep staging on this pass, and turned off the top bulb by accident, which I think helped the R/T number. If I had only been willing to pay the extra $10.00 and beat on my car for a few more passes by entering the bracket competition, I would have won the "Lowest Reaction Time" trophy hands down! Oh well, I'll get 'em next year.

Overall, I was a bit disappointed by my ETs. Our club president has a nearly stock '94 convertible and he was in the high 13's at around 102 MPH pretty much all day. I was kinda' thinking that's where my car would run, but it looks like I'll need to get my tranny situation sorted out before that happens.

Had a blast though! I'm sure I'll probably be back before too long.

I don't believe that I'm openly admitting this on a public forum, but I was a huge KISS fan back in the 70's / 80's, so my handle was "Dr. Love". Yep, there was a big, fat pimply faced teenager at the mic.

Nice day here in Chi-town. Drove the Vette to work yesterday and today and I'll probably drive it the rest of the week. Taking advantage of this beautiful weather!

Picked myself up a new snowblower over the weekend:

New Snowblower

I always wanted a two-stage machine, and since the blizzrd last February pretty much killed my trusty 11-year-old Murry two-cycle, I figured it was about time. I really don't want to use the term "I can't wait for it to snow", but I'm curious now to see how this thing performs. Wondering if it'll be overkill on 1"-2" of snow. It has three forward speeds and one reverse, and I had never used a two-stage self-propelled snow blower before. During a dry-run in my driveway, I put it in third gear and hit the drive lever and it just about pulled my arms out of their sockets. Wasn't expecting that!

I'm also taking the Vette in this Friday after work to have the wheels rebalanced. The previous owner had installed a set of Toyo Proxes 4's on it shortly before I bought the car two years ago, as the tires looked almost new and still had the little rubber nibs on them. The place that mounted them though did a horse-poop job. Three of my wheels have huge clumps of wheel weights at various places on them, but my right front has NO weights, unless they're hidden on the back side of the wheel. The steering wheel gets to vibrating noticeably at speeds over 55 mph or so. Been dealing with it all summer and finally decided to get it taken care of.

Come on Friday!!

Have a good one Gurus!

Probably one of the single greatest (or worst, depending who you're a fan of) days in MLB history. U-N-R-E-A-L.

Being a closet BOSox fan, I was stunned. Rooting for Tampa all the way now! Also listened to my Cubbies sign off for the season with another loss. Fresh start coming next year for the Cubs. Hope they find an enthusiastic new GM, and rid themselves of some dead weight. Wish things were different with Aramis Ramirez though. I'll miss him. He's a good veteran player who works with all the new young guys, but he wants to go where he thinks he has a better chance of being on a winning team. Can't says I blame him.

The sun finally came out here in Chi-Town this afternoon. Hope it sticks around.

Busier than a one-legged lumberjack in a butt-kickin' contest at work today. Jeesh.

@vetteblondie: How about "SEEFIVE"? Only fellow 'Vette folks would get it, but it's all I can come up with right now.

Not that I'm aware of. That was talked about a bit at the last club meeting, but I think there were some issues with track availability.

Hey Don, ever tried melatonin? I used to have BAD insomnia and tried a number of prescription sleep aids, none of which worked and left me useless the next day (more useless than usual).

Then I gave melatonin a shot. Worked great and no "hangover" feeling the next day. You can pick it up at any local big chain drug store in the vitamins section. I use a 3 mg tablet and it's perfect.

Saw the oncologist yesterday and I STILL have no diagnosis. Based on the information that has been gathered thus far, they can't identify the unique strain of lymphoma that I may have. There just isn't enough solid information. So, they're going to take another somewhat larger biopsy from the bump on my forehead (which has become progressively larger) and try that. If that still doesn't do it, they have to go into my neck and remove one of the lymph nodes that are swollen. That's a surgery I'm definitely not looking forward to. Oh well, gotta' do what I gotta' do.

Needed a mood lifter this morning, so I drove the Vette to work. It's cool and cloudy outside, and it'll probably get rained on, but so what. Only a few weeks of the driving season left, so gotta' enjoy it while we can. Man, I just LOVE driving that thing!

You hit the nail RIGHT on the head there Andy. I've been thinking that same thing a lot lately. They're making cars now that park themselves, and even have gadgets onboard that can even compensate for a driver who falls asleep! While all this is great, the more of these safety gadgets they put into cars, the more inclined people will be to not hone their defensive driving skills or bother to pay attention while they're driving.

I really get a kick out of the one commercial for a well known, high end German luxury car that flashes between a number of snooty, intellectual types who go on and on about how their car saved their life during a moment of inantentive driving. Give me a break!!

So, the final results were:

'86 - $7,500

'94 - $8,000

CE - $19,000

We all undervalued the '86, all came pretty close on the '94, and none of us were anywhere near on the CE.

I came closest on the '86 (guessed $6,500 - sold $7,500).

Matt nailed the '94 on the head at $8,000.

Corvetteronw came very close on the CE (guessed $16,700 - sold $19.000), and I think he came closest overall. WINNER!!

I'm a little blown away by the CE, but I guess when you think about it, the car is super clean, has VERY low mileage, and was a fairly low production model (CE) with a one-year-only performance engine.

Interesting stuff.

And the '96 CE just sold for (be sure your sitting down)...

$19,000.00!!!

With the buyer's premium, the final out-the-door price was $20,900.00!!!

Figured it out.

Assuming a 10% buyers premium...

The '86 sold for $7,500 (final bid price before comission)

The '94 sold for $8,000 (final bid price before comission)

Yep, we're just going by what the final bid price is. No buyers/sellers premiums.

I stand corrected. The post-sale price that B-J posts on their website DOES include the buyers premium. I'm not sure how we would calculate that out.

It looks like the '86 and '94 have already crossed the block!

The '86 sold for $8,250.00 (including buyers comission)
(well-sold in my opinion)

The '94 sold for $8,800.00 (including buyers comission)
(Did I nail that one or what?!!)

The CE is still waiting to cross the block.

//Edit** Matt actually hit the '94's price exactly at $8,000. **Edit//

Working from home today because I have an appointment with my oncologist this afternoon where I will hopefully get the diagnosis/prognosis for my lymphoma (or whatever it is), and where he will lay out the treatment options. It'll be interesting to hear what he has to say, to say the least. Hoping for the best.

Yesterday afternoon, I got the e-mail from our Corvette club president with the details about our 4th Annual All Corvette Shootout (http://www.crownpointvettes.org). I missed it last year so I'm really hoping to get out there this time around. Depends on some work things that are going on as well as where I stand with treatment.

Tonight is a big TV night at our house! The season premiers of all of our favorite shows ("Community", "The Office", "30 Rock", etc.), PLUS opening night of the B-J auction. I'll be doing a lot of channel flipping!

Have a good day Gurus!

Yep, we're just going by what the final bid price is. No buyers/sellers premiums.

BTW, here are my guesses:

1986 - $6,500.00

1994 - $8,750.00

1996 CE - $13,800.00

Do you think being sold at a Barrett-Jackson auction they'll go for over-market prices? I can post up the final sales prices after the auction to see who comes closest. No prizes. just braggin' rights!

Hey Andy,

All the mechanic did was change the Opti. The plug wires were replaced about three years ago by a different mechanic. However, the car's owner did replace just the coil wire himself during the time he and I were troubleshooting the problem. Changing the coil wire alone didn't fix the issue.

I don't know this mechanic myself, but he's been doing business with the car's owner for many years and they know each other well. I'd hate to think he would take advantage of a situation like this. I believe he only charged the car's owner $300.00 in labor to replace the Opti, which I think is a real fair price, and also let the owner source the part himself.

Another day in paradise here in the Windy City. Cloudy and damp here today, but fairly warm. We're forecast to have a nice week ahead though.

This past Saturday, we took the Vette out on one of the nicest cruises we've been on since buying the car. It was my birthday, and I really had a taste for the "Thresher's Dinner" at Amish Acres in Nappannee, IN (http://www.amishacres.com/DW_WEBSITE/family_style_dining.php). Nappannee had their Apple Festival going on, and also had a nice car/airplane show at the local airport which we went and checked out.

By far, my favorite Corvette there was this '62:

Resized Image

Exactly 30 model years older than mine, with the same color scheme.

It was an absolutely spectacular day, and the drive through the countryside was amazing. Saw a number of trees begining to change colors on the drive out though.

Sigh...

Seriously Bill? This is the view from the roof of your house? You suck!

Just to put a period on this one, it turns out that it was in fact the Optispark. The car's owner took it to his mechanic and he was able to determine that it was the Opti that was failing. Not sure exactly how he did that, but a new MSD is in place and the car is running just fine now.

As a matter of fact, the car was driven 380 miles round-trip to Funfest at Effingham this past weekend without a single issue.

Hey BillH. the H44 came from module 4 which is the Power Control Module. Would that make a difference? Does that still pertain to the O2 sensors?

Well, back to the drawing board.

Stopped by the car owner's house yesterday after work. I did the paperclip trick and got a "C12" for module 1, meaning no codes. Module 4 had an H44, and module 9 had an H71 if memory serves correct. I don't think either of those historical codes pertain to the issue.

I also did injector resistance readings. Results as follows (cylinder number -resistance reading):

COLD = 1 -13.6, 2 -14.2, 3 -13.6, 4 -14.3, 5 -13.6, 6 -14.5, 7 -13.6, 8 -15.0

HOT = 1 -13.2, 2 -13.7, 3 -13.0, 4 -13.2, 5 -12.9, 6 -13.1, 7 -12.9, 8 -13.1

The car sat and idled for about 30 minutes, with a few blips of the throttle thrown in, to get the injectors hot. However, after 30 minutes it died out on its own, and we couldn't get it restarted (just cranked and cranked, but never fired). So, we just went ahead and took the hot readings. I noticed a couple of times when we blipped the throttle that the engine stumbled a bit when it was coming back down to idle. I also thought it was kind of strange that the resistance readings went DOWN or stayed the same on the hot injectors. I thought they would have gone up. He's still running the original Multecs. Even though they're old, I have serious doubts that the problem is injector related.

Anyway, the car's owner is taking it in to his mechanic Monday afternoon (assuming that it starts again for him). I really thought we had it with the new coil wire. I felt bad that I couldn't help get it sorted out.

Maximum Mojo to all of my Guru friends in need today, especially to Tommy's mom. Knock 'em dead, Don!

Enjoy the weekend all! Myself, we'll be babysitting my wife's sister's kids tomorrow night, and we have the Corvette club picnic on Sunday. My nephew is learning to play guitar, so I'm hoping he brings his with to our house so we can have a little jam session!

Later,

Ron

Another quick update...

The car's owner replaced the coil-to-Opti wire the other day. The car started and ran, but died again. However, he claimed that it ran much longer before it died. Before, temp would get to about 195 degrees when it would die, almost without fail. This time, the car idled a bit longer and got hotter before it died.

He let it sit for a few minutes and it restarted with no problems. This time, however, he let the car sit for about 30 minutes and it DID NOT DIE OUT. Temp went well into the 220-230 degree range. He even blipped the throttle a number of times during this period and the car continued to run. I was on the phone with him during most of this time and I could hear the car idling in the background. Sounded good. I was urging him to take it out and drive it, but he was short on time.

Haven't talked to him since, but I'm planning to head over to his house again today after work to do a resistance reading on his injectors and to try the paperclip trick to check for codes (thanks again Bill!).

I'm thinking we MAY have found the issue.

I'll update again later.

Ron

Thanks TeeBee!.

Thanks Bill! I'll pass this along to the car's owner, but I have a feeling he will be taking it in to have it checked out.

Uuuuh boy. Bad situation. Glad it wasn't any worse than it was and that all the people involved weren't hurt badly.

Lately, I have found myself paying a LOT more attention to the brake lights in front of me when I'm driving for some unknown reason. I usually drive like little old lady anyway, and a lot of people give me crap about having a Corvette but driving so slow. Sorry folks; having been involved in couple of bad accidents and having been badly hurt in one of them, it's just how I roll.

An update on my guy's '94...

Stopped by his house yesterday in hopes of scanning for any stored codes. I have an Auto X-Ray OBD1 reader/scanner, and an Actron Pocket-Scan OBDII. As it turns out, I wasn't able to scan ANYTHING. I had forgotten that '94 was the year GM put a 16-pin interface on an OBDI system. My OBDI scanner didn't have the proper interface, and the Actron OBDII reader couldn't communicate with the ECM. Argh!

Will the paperclip trick work on a '94? I wasn't sure, so I didn't pursue it yesterday.

Also, the car's owner is off in search of a new Opti-to-coil wire. He removed it, and said it looked okay, but he decided to try replacing it just the same. If that still doesn't correct it, he's going to defer to his mechanic in hopes of trying to find out the source of the underhood light show.
