89 Stumbles with a code 33...Help...

In the past few weeks my 89 has started to intermittently stumble at low speeds, it stumbles then picks back up and runs normal till its next episode, I dont have to be on the gas for it to happen, I can just be cruising along. I checked the codes and got a code 33 after clearing it once from the ECM . The scanner says (MAF/ MAP sensor to high) Could the stumbling Im getting be caused by the MAF burn off / Power relays or is it more likely the MAF itself. They also list one of the causes could be the ECM. I guess what I really want to know is, where do I start looking and testing. Im more of a Mechanical guy, Im not much when it comes to electrical..Thanks for any help...WW7

No matter what you find out to be the problem, its a good idea to use some thermal tape on the gas line just in case. When I put in my 383 with headers, the first thing I did was wrap anything that looked like it was close to the headers, fuel lines, brake lines and I even put a couple layers on the bottom and side of the brake booster.. It can't hurt...WW

Pianoguy mentioned Cooper tires. I have a set of Cooper Zeon 2XS tires on my 89, I now have 24,000 miles on them and counting. I paid $650.00 for the set and have nothing but good things to say about them. They are sticky, handle very well, are great in the rain and last a long time. I will be replacing these tires with another set of Coopers when the time comes..WW

Instead of going to all that trouble why not just put in one high speed fan?? I just bought a Dewitts fan that puts out 1/3 more air then a stock fan and now the temps go down about twice as fast as with the one stock fan. This seems like it would accomplish the same thing without having to mess with your wiring..The Dewitts fan just plugs in.There are other fans on the market that do the same thing but I like Dewitts.WW

Just make sure you still have a catch pan down there when you change them out, just in case you have trouble getting the new one in..The thing is, even if you drained the whole system like the book says you would still have coolant in the block that would have to be drained out through the knock sensor hole anyway..When I did mine I only lost about 2 ozs of coolant.Good Luck...WW

Yes there is no codes but this sounds like it could be the problem i will check it tonight the book says you have to drain the coolant to change this is that correct?

Thats what the book says, but I did it the way Pete K told me he does it, and it worked great...I just unscrewed the old one, put my finger in the hole and very quickly screwed the new sensor in and tightened to spec..Quite easy, and I only lost a little coolant..If you have, or know someone with a scanner this is the easiest way to tell if your knock sensor is working..You can just tap on the exhaust manifold with a wrench and see if the scan tool registers any knock counts. The scanner will also tell you if your ECM is retarding the timing to cancel out the pinging or knocking...WW

The knock sensors job is to pick up the vibrations when your engine pings or knocks and to send the signal to the ESC module. The ESC module relays that information to the ECM which then retards timing to stop the pinging or knocking..If your knock sensor is not working when you have pinging or knocking there will be nothing to stop it and it could damage your engine over time.In a lot of cases when the knock sensor stops working its due to a bad plug on the wire that connects to the knock sensor...WW

Here it is, in the car and running fine, still needs to be datalogged and tuned. It started up quick and never leaked a drop of anything. At the begining of the video its hunting a little but thats because I just unhooked the battery cable to clear the ecm after making a few adjustments and it hasn't recalibrated yet..Also keep in mind that there are no mufflers , I sort of like the way it sounds, but the local law enforcement may not.....WW
