But you state;

'87+ 1 pce seal engines are ext balance at rear from factory ,which is what DM flywheel is. You no longer have the stock balance arangement

In order to neutral balance a DM your have to get the cast weights machined off risking cutting into the hollow part that contains the dampening fluid.

That is why when modifing a engine you retain the stock balance configuration because you can walk into any shop and get a correct balance flywheel of the shelf (if you can find a new DM these days)

The location I stated is where it is at; look there first for broken line. The only way you are going to get pics is if someone has the engine out of their car.

where the black tube enters the loom exactly? That's what I need to pinpoint,

On my '90 loom,( 91 should be same ) the vac line comes out at the same loom connection where the wiring running to the A/c switches / blower splits from.

First breakout of wires from main loom on firewall ,about a foot along loom from the bulkhead connector.
Exposed vac line is approx 6" long if not broken

Earlier models are different; tube comes out closer to dist and only about 3" of vac line exposed from harness

Pull the codes

'90 has the lovely CCM and SIR (airbag ) systems that have to send a data signal to the ECM to fire the injectors (and run pump from memory).

Is there any movement in the pinion?
If the bearings are bad the pinion could be running out of round opening up the seal.

Nice thinking .
There have always been complaints in the past as to lack of aftermarket shifters for the 4+3.
Your adapter allows you to run any regular tailshaft mount T10 shifter.

Don't forget you have to extend the backup switch wiring that was on the auto shifter through the floor to the switch on the reverse selector at the trans.
You have to extend the starter inhibitor wiring from the shifter to the switch on the clutch pedal( or just join wires together if you don't want this feature).

Stock, the O/d is controlled by the computer .As you don't have the manual chip with the O/d programming in your computer all you have to do is run a 12V feed to the O/d solenoid.
Fused 12V through a relay controlled by the switch preferable.

Most people only use the O/d on the highway anyway. The only feature you lose is the automatic kickdown out of O/d when you floor it ; would have to do it manually.

My first flexplate has a 12" ID.... overall including the ring gear it is approxmiately 12.5"..... I was trying to fit it inside the ring gear.

No ,
the convertor pads sit on top of the ring gear by an 1/8" from the inside of the ring gear but back enough from the tooth edge not to hit the starter gear when it engages.

Quote:
I ordered the TCI 168 tooth dual pattern flexplate that he says the ID is slightly bigger, hence, probably a thinner ring gear.

The 168 is a 14" dia flexplate ; will need offset bolt pattern starter unless you have dual pattern mini starter.

I have a Art Carr 9.5 on stock 153 tooth factory plate and the convertor pads sit over the ring gear by 1/8"
No interference with starter
Remember the flexplate is only 12.5" and the large bolt pattern is 11.5" c/c so no much meat left.
In saying that, your convertor has both patterns and your TCI flexplate should have the smaller 10.75" bolt pattern.

Which way is the bolt pattern out?
There was a 9.75" convertor pattern for "Glides" although nowadays most plates are listed just as small or big pattern

Not hard , if you found your way around carbs and dist OK then you have the same functions with EFI , only electronically controlled.Where you used to set your spark advance with weights and springs the ECM does it from a program

The shifter itself is mounted in a box accessible only from the top. There is a plate at the front with rubber seals that the shift linkages run through to the trans

Regular T10 Completely different arangement. There is no provision on the 4+3 for mounting the shifter to the trans.

Best bet is to find someone local or a wrecking yard and get exact dimensions of tunnel recess.
4+3's have enough problems with shifter alginment without building extra in.

dry wrote:As far as the IAC no code

how does a coolant temp sensor affect idle quality? .

There is no code for faultly IAC operation

Coolant Temp sensor(CTS ) ; at intake front is the biggy in terms of engine operation.
The ECM is programmed to do different functions and nearly all of them have a temp related setting.
If the ECM is not seeing the correct actual engine temp then it will not be applying the correct outputs.

Say the engine is at operating temp and the CTS is reading low temp then the ECM will be still supplying extra fuel ( like the choke on your BBC ) assuming the engine is not up to temp.

Do not be confused about what the temp gauge is reading. This has it's own independent sensor( pass side head, rear) and is not indicative of the reading the ECM is seeing.
Like Captmike states above; you will have to reset the "idle" screw back and read adjust TPS /IAC

Easiest to get tunnel section from 4+3 car and glass it in

Glad it works as you wanted

Some of the stock TCC lockup parameters .
Once at operating temp everything appears speed related. It would appear you get lockup at the set speed ; regardless of how hard you have your foot down
The only setting relating to throttle position is the "TPS low MPH coast load limit" set at 3%TPS

Rebuild trans with right parts and put a quality shift kit in it.
Can then manually shift it when ever you want or drop in D if feeling lazy.Full engine braking on downshifts like a stick
Put IN an aftermarket shifter like a B&M Quicksilver rachet and no more missed shifts

$300 extra for a stroker crank ; zero if you were planning on upgrading crank. You have to buy new pistons anyway to suit rebore

All SBC are neutral balance at front EXCEPT 400ci
2 pce seal engines are internal balance at rear EXCEPT 400ci

1 pce seal engines (late L98 /LTX ) are external balance at rear; they have a counterweight on the flexplate. This was required because the round crank flange on the 1 pce seal crank didn't allow for the conterweight to be placed there

When you rebuild you get the rotating assembly with flexplate and balancer balanced as a complete assembly , preferibly to stock balance configuration. That way you can buy a off the shelf flywheel / flexplate anytime in the future.

Forged is nice but the better quality cast steel cranks (SCAT / EAGLE) are supposed to be good for 450Hp.

The ZZ4 is only an improved ( stronger ) version of his existing L98 engine ; same 113 head , better cam and springs.
So manifold choice is no different than for L98
The FIRST has the best potential while still retaining long runner setup if he wants to go down that path
