I did this for a local friend...helping him with a few projects. This is a 350 out of a 1978 Anniversary Corvette. I took it down to the long block, installed new timing gears, front and rear seals, and reassembled it with all new gaskets and seals. Restored the intake and valve covers, and used factory colored paints so it'll be right at home in someone's stock Corvette.

Took about 30 hours total from the time it got into the garage to how it's pictured now.

Before:

After:

The project owner and I decided against a full rebuild. It's a low mileage engine, all original, and we wanted to keep it that way. Wasn't broke, so we didn't fix it. LOL.

Nicely done!

But I'm glad I'm not a stickler for "stock". No way would my engine be baby blue.

Thanks, yeah it's not my cup either but if I were after a stock engine for a stock car then I must admit it looks fantastic. Certainly a striking combination with the black finned covers.

Matt, fantastic job. Doesn't look like the same motor. Is it a PC? If so, it is smart to keep it stock $$$.

Ahh, yeah I totally missed that one. LOL. No it was a silver anniversary car.

I'm trying to get the VIN and true mileage from the remains of the car...we still know where it is.

Is that an L82 or an L48?

It's an L82. The L82 package, among other things, meant a 4 bolt block, forged crank and piston rods, higher compression, and large valves. That's how they got the 220 HP rating over the L48 185 HP rating.

I think you could get either one in the Anniversary car but was the Pace Car all L82's?

Either engine was available in the Pace Cars.

came out real nice.

GM painted LT1/4's black instead of Chevy red.

I wonder why the switch?

Thanks. Sorry your last comment got deleted with the thread it was in. This is a new one.

I had fun with that project. Lots of labor but still easy and fun.

Looks great DB....I need to do a similar thing so I can get my '76 back together and sell it. May just cost way to much for a full rebuild. Since the original block has already been pulled apart, and since the market just can't give much $$$ on a '76, just not sure if spending the dough on a complete rebuilt(done right) would be worth it.

Chris sometimes a cosmetic rebuild is all it needs. You say it's been pulled apart before, and as long as you have good compression and minimal bearing wear there is nothing wrong with doing it this way.

I have about 30 hours in the prep and painting and assembly. Not bad overall and most of that time was spent stripping the old paint off the block, oil pan, timing cover, and media blasting the intake and cleaning the valve covers. Lots of hand labor but total parts cost was around $150 after the new valve cover emblem and grommets.

The new front and rear seals solve any pesky leaks, and the fresh paint on a clean block really liven up the engine. I still like looking at it when I go out in the garage and I really do not care for blue engines. LOL.

This must be the same engine

Here is my 78 CLR 010 355 with vortec heads and modified the block for the roller ZZ4 cam. I built this past summer

This engine was built right on this stand. It is going in my 77 with the 2004r trans with 3.55 gears

This engine dolly will grow into a run stand and breaks down into three sections for storage.

that's a pretty cool contraption! Great way to break in the cam before dropping the motor and checking for leaks.

Art, please delete that Ebay link. I am not trying to sell this engine on this site and I don't want anyone getting that idea. I appreciate being a favorite seller of yours and I like that you watch all of my auctions. However that Ebay link has no place in this thread. Thanks.

Nice run stand. I was going to pull the trigger on one a few months ago, but I had second thoughts.

I agree, very cool engine run stand. Well built and well thought out.

My Step Dad has a run stand he built many years ago that I guess we could resurrect and use if we needed to but I never really saw gains in the efforts.

They are good for break ins, mixture, and timing. However, I install my engines without the distributor...and I kind of prefer my engine break ins to have some load on them. I'd have to re-time the engine anyway removing the distributor, and it has no load. Not only that, but roller engines are a lot easier to break in and that's what I've been building lately.

Right about the load, I use mine to break in the flat tappet cam only, mix, timing and leak check. Then break in the engine on the track.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a dyno?

I would LOVE my own engine dyno setup but I'm not in the right income bracket for one of those. Maybe someday. Best case is I might find someone in the area with one.
