Alright! Now the fun part. All sub-assemblies are built, and it is time for the final checks, and assembly.
Remember, I have previously filled he output side of the case, and it is now time for the input side. 1st item of business is installing the selective thickness washer that controls the units endplay. Normally a #69 or #70 gets you close. I toss a #70 on because it was handy. Next, I set the torrington washer, black side up, on top of the selective. Notice the notches on the outside of the input drum above. The reverse frictions in the reverse drum must spline onto them. This involves a bit of wiggling. Pic below shows revers drum in place. |

The input drum and reverse drum assemblies must be lowered into the trans case together. This is difficult because the input drum/reverse drum combo must spline into 3 different things at the same time.
In the pic below, I am pointing at the ring gear splines that engage the 3-4 frictions. Next pic is the splines that engage the sprag. Pic below points to the sunshell splines that engage the splines on the outside edge of the reverse drum. After a few minutes of wiggling, jiggling, and cursing, the drums are in. Notice that a mock up gasket (previously installed and compressed) is in place, along with some alignment pins. Next, pump washer is "glued: into place with some vaseline, and the pump is ready to install. Notice that the pump does not have it's exterior O-ring in place at this time. There is a good reason, and I will explain. Whoops, dont forget to install the band before installing the pump. Install the band anchor pin: Now, we set the pump in place, and snug it down with a mock up set of pump bolts. I tighten them to 18 ft lbs, as specified by the manual. 1st Check is unit endplay Hot damn! It comes in at .018. I like .016-.023, so I guessed correctly on the selective end play washer. |

Now it is time to get the servo set up correctly. The servo pushes the servo pin, which then pushes the side of the band, allowing it to clamp. The idea is to set it properly with a selective length pin, so that it will be set for the life of the band, thus the life of the trans. Except for this procedure, there is no band adjustment on this trans. You set it, and forget it.
To do this, a $400 tool is kinda needed. In lieu of this tool, there is an alternate procedure, and I will explain later. Pic below shows the servo pin length checker being installed into the servo bore, with a medium long servo pin in place. The tool has a hole that must line up with a white line, when 100 inch pounds of torque is applied. GM identifies the pin length with rings molded near the end 1 band, 2 band, 3 band etc. 3 band is the longest pin gm puts in a production trans. My 3 band pin is acceptable with the go-no go guage, but it is not where I want it. What is my option? 1) Live with it, as most would. 2) Add a pin extender to it. 3) Buy an extra long pin from GM that can be carefully ground down to fit. It is an extra $25 to the budget, but I choose option #3. After much trial and error, I sneak up on the correct length, 1 pass of the file at a time. Now that the servo pin length is custom set, I assemble the servo completely, and place it on the side. Now, I must remove the pump to install the o-ring around the outside. Be sure the red stripe is centered in the groove. Next, the 7 pump bolts get their sealing 0-rings installed, and all are lubed with vaseline. Pump is replaced with a new, virgin pump gasket, and criss-crossed torqued to 18 ft lbs. Complete servo assembly is installed, and the cover is retained with it's C-Clip. Although I forgot to snap a pic, you can install a dial indicator to determine total servo cover movement. I aim for .080-.100, with .090 as my target. I achieved .090 on this build. At this time, everything is installed internally, except what goes in the trans pan. |

Lets say, a fella (Un-named) bought a new 700R4 transmission and then without thinking, installed in his 85 vette without putting the transmission tube into it.(Theoritically), thus how would this person (Un-named) go about putting in his dipstick tube.... keep in mind, that in theory, this guy doesn't even remember where the tube goes in that transmission considering the only part of the 700R4 he can see is the bottom of it..... (Theoritically of course).....
What would you say to this non-existant theoritical only person Pete ? |

I been there, and it is a bitch. I lube it up with wd-40, and slide and wiggle it from the bottom. Once, I had to unhook the c-beam, and drop the tail of the trans to get it in. 1 thing for sure, most guys only make that mistake 1 time. |

Check balls are installed as per the shop manual. Because I installed a B&M shift kit, the B&M instructions will dictate checkball placement, and it will vary depending on model year.
On this 90 core, the pic below shows correct placement. 3 OEM checkballs were ommitted. Next, alignment pins are placed, and the gasket is lowered down. Notice the gasket placed first (against the case) is marked with a C Modified seperator plate is installed, then the valve body gasket. Notice it is marked with a V Checkballs are placed in the valve body, (again as per the B&M instructions), and retained with a plop of vaseline. All bolts are carefully torqued in sequence to 87 inch pounds. Aux Valve body, crossover tube, and 1-2 accumulator cover are installed next, with the same torque spec. I have also installed the lock up harness, and all pressure switches. Next comes the filter, and a final once over. Then the pan goes on, and all pan bolts are torqued to 100 inch pounds. DO NOT use any sealer on gasket. A thin smear of vaseline is ok, but not sealers or adhesives. Retorque after 1 week. Finished trans: |

It is the boot seal just in front of the round servo cover. The one behind the servo cover is for the tv cable.

Very interesting series of threads. They confirm a couple of things for me.
1. When I need a trans i will call you 2. There's more shit inside one of these things than I would ever want to mess with so refer back to #1 You do nice work. |

Can't wait to see if the close ratio gear set is worthwhile
However, are you going to be able to do a good comparison since you roached your engine? Mike |

Mike, If possible, I may run the trans with the current combo. It has blowby, but still runs stong, and consistently. I see no reason not to get good data. If time doesn't allow me back to the track this year, I will put the repaired or different engine in, tune it, then swap in the new gear ratio trans, so I may get good comparative info. Small hiccup in the plans. |

Hey Pete A general question about 700R4's? I understand GM fixed various things and improved things in the 700R4 the more years they used them. Can the early year 700R4's be improved to same amount as later year 700R4's or is it money wize better to look for a later year 700R4 core to rebuild when you have one of the first year 700R4's they made? Thanks Tim

They can, but you are definately better off to spend the money on a core that is 88-92. Cheaper and easier. |

Is the 87 and older a poorer choice for a rebuild? Is the case different, weaker, or what?

Pre 88 are shitty years for a performace build. Externally, cases are the same. Internally, there are major changes to the worm track. 82-84 absolutely sucked 85-87 1/2 had quite a few improvements, and are not too bad. From 82-93, GM made hundreds of design changes. Most minor, som major, but way too many to list. |

So the 700R4 in my 85 4x4 might be worth rebuilding? I've seen web sites that show how to update and improve the fluid flow of older 700R4's by drilling and changing size of holes etc.in older 700R4's. I opened it up and all looked great, even the clutches and band looked great. At the time I wondered about doing the fluid update,a shift kit and a stock rebuild kit,but didn't do it because I thought I'd be better off with newer 700R4 core. If a newer core is best, what about going to the even newer electronic shifted transmissions? What are they called 4L60/4L80e? I've seen on ebay someone sells everything needed to convert these back to old style shifting. So you don't need a computer to shift it. They want way to much for the small stand alone computers kits for them to be an option. Thanks Tim

If you are going to toss 500 hp at it, I would look for a different trans. If you are building a typical 300-350 hp engine, it will work well with a few updates.

I think I caught all but one. I'll have to look through them again. Say, do you have a list of tools needed for a rebuild. I'd love to tear into my trucks 700r4 since it won't be going anywhere for a while. Not quite sure if I have the balls to go through with it, but I think I could do it.

Pete with all this work on the transmissions, what about guidance on longevity for how you drive it.
Would it be prudent to just leave it in 3rd, till you need it on the highway? Will this keep it from shifting in/out of 4th therefore keeping things cooler. |

Nah. 4th applies the band, and normally lets it run cooler. When shifting manually, it brings on another set of clutches, and activates a spag for more holding power. So, when you are beating on it, manual shifting is a good thing. When cruising, just let it work as normal, and temps will be cool. What converter are you running? When it comes out, be sure to check the end play. |

I am running a Vigilante 2800 stall. When the tranny was built last time it was taken apart, for whatever reason a shop would do that (maybe to look for cleanliness). Well, when I test drove it about 100 yeards I took it right back. We took the tranny out, and tried to figure out wtf, well the guy who rebuilt it (work release program) said he took it apart. And having a little knowledge I asked what the end play was. I got the deer in the headlight look.
So, I called Vigilante, and they told me what the range was. His was loose as a 2 dollar whore. SO, we used this fancy machine that does all the cutting and welding for you, and reset it to Vigilantes spec. The clutch in the Vigilante is huge. Sorry for the run on, but it brought back memories of that place. I do need to put a temp gauge, just havent figured out where to tap into, and to put the gauge. My laser temp never went above 180, on pan and when I pulled dipstick out and checked it. |

Where does the time go?
I can't believe that this transmission has been sitting on the shelf for 3 years! Life has gotten in the way of my hobby, thats for sure. If all goes well, I plan on pulling it down quickly for a fast inspection, and install this winter. I am hoping to do a full rear suspension rebuild, so the trans will only be a few more bolts. Updates to follow, eventually...... |
