I've never felt more comfortable driving in snow.
I've also see multiple 2wd pickups either sideways, or off the road |

I've noticed I need to keep it in 4wd for the rain as well. BTW it's definitely 4wd not Awd Sharp turns in a parking lot you can hear the tires chirp! You can also hear the drive gears going down the road. Heavy duty units all the way. |

Hmmmm... this isn't very good on the drive train. I wouldn't recommend this at all, unless you know you are not going to turn. The only time I've ever used 4x4 on the road was in snow, ice, or pulling a boat up a boat ramp. Does your truck have a Detroit locker or breadbox setup? |

I'm not sure, but my commute is on local roads. I'm thinking the same thing though, keep it in 2wd unless it's really nasty out. I've fishtailed a couple of times in the rain. I need to get a cover on it so I can weigh the back down. |

If you are not sure, then you don't have Detroit lockers. They have a very distinctive and unmistakable clacking sound when going around a right or left turn. I would definitely not drive in 4x4 on the street, unless it is slippery enough for the tires to spin without forcing all of the stress on the driveline components!
Now come on Brian, fishtailing in a truck is fun and relaxing, after fishtailing in a C4, especially that car you've been building! |

My 2wd Silverado will light up the tires easily in the wet with the 3:73. But, if you drive it easy it won't fishtail at all. No one I know uses 4wd in the rain.
I do put weight in the back in the winter, this works really well: Attach file: yhst-47899628452395_2078_1651678.gif (0.00 KB) |

My 1/2 ton Chevy's have an auto button that you can push which leaves it in 2wd unless it starts to slip then the 4wd kicks in. It's not that way on the 3/4 ton stuff, there it's one or the other. We got 10 inches and a lot of drifts.

I have a S-10 with the zr2 package. It is nice because it has the RPO G80 (limited slip). Which if one wheel starts to spin there is a small weight that catches and locks the diff. I think it has to be around a 6mph difference. I can tell the difference in the snow.

I don't think anybody's putting detroit ratcheting lockers in new pickups. They are junk. And all the manufacturers are into those electronic lockers now.

I agree! New trucks don't use them. I didn't know if his truck was old or new. However, lockers are great for true off roading. |

I love my 4wd and have used it the past few days now that the bad weather is starting. I have highway tires on my xterra that I found out suck in the snow w/o using the 4wd. My wife's rogue is selectable awd which is nice, too. No more winter cars for me without awd/4wd.

Good, I flick off the 4wd as soon as the road changes from snow to wet. For a real 4wd/snow experience nothing beats: Coming back, fairly burnt out, from Laguna Seca 3 day race. 4 1/2 hours done out of a 6 1/2 hour tow. 4wd Excursion towing a 24 ft. enclosed trailer (8,000lbs.) On I80, its raining in Sacramento, hit snow at Auburn. Headed towards an 8,000 ft. hill. 30 mi past Auburn, the CHP has the road blocked off as usual checking for snowtires/chains. I stop at the checkpoint, road conditions are now R3, chains mandatory. Oh by the way, you have to chain up one trailer axle too. It takes 3 hours to go 50 miles. Funny thing about Donner Summit is that you don't see 2wds in the ditches but you see a bunch of 4wds in the ditches every time. |

Sure glad I don't have to worry about snow: 1. I am in Geaorgia, 2. I am retired so don;t have to worry about it anyway.
But my RAM 2WD has the 5.9L and will burn the rubber off the tires about anytime I want it to. I do have to be a little carefull on the wet roads though. |

There are some downsides to using lockers on icy roads. A locker is good if you're stuck in a ditch, but more likely to put you in the ditch to begin with.
With an open diff, one wheel will slip, but the other might maintain traction. With a locker, they both slip. And the locker is more likely to cause tire slip around turns if it doesn't unlock. |

Yep, that's a great way to describe it. Lockers are great for hard core off road use (rock climbing, going through deep tire grooves or ditches, or deep mud), but not so great on the road. With that being said, it's even better to be able to control the lockers through an Atlas system. Attached is when you need lockers. This is why I get a kick out of folks saying how well their positrack 2wd trucks do on the road, which most of the time is really limited slip.... but that's a whole other story. I wish this was mine. A friend at work used to own this YJ, but since has upgraded. This was taken in CO. I have owned some TJ's and a truggy. Currently I do not have an off road toy, but will again. Good 4 cylinder TJ's are not expensive. This is a hobby like Corvette's. Buy and build as things break. Off roading is a blast!! I don't have the guts to do what my buddy did in that picture though.

Brian, I don't know much about that particular product, but have seen the Eaton eLocker system at work. They seem to make good diffs.
CentralCoaster, that makes me want another one!! Nice rig. I can see a Toyota rear diff, but what is the transfer case and front diff? I also like the self made rocker crush guards. Have you ever been wheelin' with him? Just a warning, if you go, you'll be hooked. It's a wild feeling reaching out of a lifted vehicle window and touching the ground... The fun part about building these is it does not have to look good. So it is easier to hack, experiment, then hack again, knowing that dents, dings, scratches, and weld marks are battle scars and are welcome. Just a different type of auto hobbie. |

Haven't in awhile. I've driven it a little, and his Landcruiser.
He has a 4.3L vortec motor in there, a Marlin Crawler double transfer case, I recall he's geared at about 200:1 in low range. |
