Saw someone else post this up and since I had some free time last night I did it. It feels so much better not having the shifter sticking up so far.
Took me about an hour with a tubing cutter and my trusty dremel tool. While I was at it I installed the front Stainless brake lines that I bought from VBP and took apart the passenger door to lube the window track. I also took apart the door lights and repainted the black parts with model paint. |

I drove a stick with a short shifter and I didn't like the throw. That's because I'm a throwback to the sixties 4 on the floor days. Whatever you like is what you should do.

If it was a stick shift I would not have it quite so short but since all I do is park-drive-reverse this is better to me.
The only short shifter that I like on manual trans is one that actually reduces the throw. |

How much did you chop off? I still need to do this on mine.

Honestly, I didn't measure it. I just eyeballed it. Took about 1-1/2 - 2" off though. I did measure how far the flat bar in the middle stuck out, that was 1" and the grooves down the sides were 5/8". If you use a tubing cutter like plumbers use to cut the shaft down you can also use that to make the groove for the clip just do that before you cut the grooves so that it does not squeeze the slits back shut... I did it after I sliced the grooves and then couldn't figure out why my knob wouldn't fit back on. |

How can a short shifter not reduce throw? Anyways, the Hurst ZF shifter works by not only shortening the top end, but also lengthening the shifter below the pivot. This gives you about 25% less mechanical advantage and movement without cutting too much off the shifter height. |

Well, coming from the Fiero family there were a couple of vendors that would take the OEM piece chop the shaft and rethread. I guess that would be considered reducing the throw. |

Looks good, but that's something I would have to think about before I started cutting.

I took 2.25" off without even thinking about it. After installing the new DVD/Nav system the old knob was right in the middle of the display. It helps getting it a little lower to see the display.
