I did not make reservations or buy tickets this year as I did not think I would be able to go. I had arthroscopic knee surgery 2 weeks ago and was not sure how my 1945 parts would heal.
Started out on crutches and Vicodin. After the first few days I thought that I would not be able to walk around the show field by June 24. BUT - I have been doing yard work and am able to ride my bicycle and have decided to go to the show!
I have been attending every year since 1996 and really enjoy the cars and the people.
I will be taking pics of things that interest me and will post them up here.
I am in a bit of a quandry about magazines though. I usually stop at a booth and extend my subscription and get a couple of free T shirts. I will renew my Corvette magazine but probably not my Auto Enthusiast issues. Auto Enthusiast was formed when they stopped printing Corvette Enthusiast, Mustang Enthusiast, Mopar Enthusiast and a few other mags. I do not like what the magazine has turned into. Don't get me wrong. I like the quality but it now covers too much that I am not interested in. I was told that I could still submit articles. I have not done so as I feel my writing and photography are not up to the standards of the professionals that write for them now.
I will be there Friday and Saturday. I am the one with the camera bag and the limp.

Really?? You had surgery (looking at the dates...10 June) and you are going to be walking around in this heat on 24 June? Are you just fast in your recovery, crazy , or that much enthusiast that you're going to take your strap of leather biting down every time you take a painful step??

I envy your trip, I've never been. Hope you post lots of pictures! Stay healthy!

I am taking my folding chair and will use it to sit in the shade if the knee starts hurting too much.
Just a few days ago I would not have gone but the exercises they gave me have helped a lot. I WILL be taking Ibuprofen.
I also like to sit in the auction area and see what the cars are going for. I will post up some prices and pics. I will also try to walk around the "Gold Mine" (cars for sale) area and post up pics and prices on some of the C4s.
Temps are supposed to be mid 70s there this weekend!
I am taking my truck and bicycle as I still have to put new O rings in my fuel rails on the 91. I park the truck in the Target parking lot and ride my bike to the show field (couple of blocks) and chain it to a post.
They are supposed to have a 2012 Corvette there too. I will get a pic of that too.
Fortunately I am only 4 hours away so it is pretty easy to get too.
I tore my right medial meniscus at work so I have had a couple of weeks off (with pay). Kinda like being on vacation!

Yeah, the weather on Saturday is supposed to be perfect! Can't wait! I'm taking tomorrow off to detail the 'Vette.

Glad to hear you're feeling better and able to make it Ron!

Glad the knee has recovered so quickly!

Sounds like fun Ron! Your knee should be fine. I had the same surgery last year and I was up an around in short order as well. I started riding my bicycle about 20 miles or more several times a week just three or four weeks after the surgery. Good Luck, have fun, take lots of photos and get published again!!

What are you looking for? A 1996 red white and blue GS vert? I guess an auto with a bum knee. Have fun Ron. And bring along some vicodin just in case. You do have to sleep.

Hmm, the toughest thing with all this is the old missionary position (wink - wink).
My pickup is a stick shift. Good for me that it was my right knee. So - if someone wants to make me an awesome deal on a C4 Grand Sport I will be glad to take it off their hands.
I will be looking for a set of TPI gaskets to fit my SLP runners. I tried cutting down a stock set but am not happy with how they turned out. I would also like to find a blue 90/91 non sport seat to replace my nasty driver's seat cover.
I had to promise my bride not to go near the Diamonds Gentlemen's Club while I was there. Of course if some of those wild Chicago guys happen to kidnap me and bring me there I am unable to resist due to my medical condition and all that.

Here are some pics. This 91 ZR-1 with 60,000 miles sold Friday at the auction for $11,500. The buyer had to pay a 15% premium so he got this for $13,225!
Resized Image

This 35 Anniv sold at auction for $5,400 for a total of $6,210! It was an automatic with around 60,000 miles and appeared to be in good shape. That is a screaming deal in my book!

Gotta go to a grandkid birthday party. Will post up more later.
After beating my poor knee up I went to the new Cars 2 movie to relax for a bit. One of the stars of the movie is a yellow C6 Z06. Fun movie.
Let me tease you a bit. When I get back I will post pics of a C3 kit you can buy to convert your trashed 77 (or other C3) into a C6 Z06 clone. It is kinda interesting but a bit odd.
Hey, almost forgot. Got home yesterday to find a check from Amos Automotive Publishing. I submitted an article on the Vette2Vette, Gordon Killebrew-engineered C4 frame braces to the former Corvette Enthusiast (now Auto Enthusiast) magazine. Looks like it will be published in their next issue! Guess I will have to renew now. I am talking with Jason from Vette2Vette about submitting an article on his shop. I already took several pics but want to return and shoot some more.

Drooling over that ZR1, Ron. Sweet deal for $13K.

The GM Corvair, I'd be a bit suspicious about that car...I think it is a modified 54.

The guy at the Corvair display claims it is an original GM concept car. Someone posted up on the big forum about being involved in the project earlier this year.
Here is the info on the C3/Z06 conversion:

After looking at this closer it appears that you would need to use a 78-82 in order to use the fast back style rear window.

Great pics! I can't believe what that ZR-1 sold for. What did you think of the new paint color on the 2012 GS? Those ramps rock, pricy I'm thinking. It's not just what's on the outside it's whats on the inside that counts. How much to do that conversion do you think? You could buy a good C5 or better I bet.....

I have a hard time believing that the Corvair Concept car is genuine. If it was, why weren't the NCRS and GM officials not swarming over it and why would it have been outside, instead of in one of the buildings. Why was it in what appears to be the swap meet area?

Great car and all, love the thing, but things don't jive here.....

I stayed in Warrenville which is about 10 miles SE of St Charles. There are usually motels/hotels available there.
Stopped at the Four Winds Casino at the Michigan/Indiana border on the way home. My goal was to win enough to buy that Aerobody 93 vert. Instead of winning the $30,000 I needed I lost $60.

Back in the day, most of those Motorama cars were just crushed. A few snuck out, some were sold at recent auctions. These days, GM doesn't really care about them. There is a guy in Chicago, Joe Bortz, who finds, restores and collects these cars. He did a 1955 Chevy Biscanye a last year. Stunning car.

That Corvair looks legit to me. I am very aware of the original and yes, it was based on a 54 Vette. So was the original Nomad concept.

This should clarify things: http://www.corvaircorsa.com/54Corvair.html

For all of you crying at the prices, welcome to the real world. C4s are not collectible, merely interesting. There is a huge difference.

I have been in contact with the owner of this car.....

Here's what they have to say.

Quote:
First off they built 3 Corvairs, people will disagree. Here are facts about the car at Bloomington:

1. It does have a few parts from the original 3rd car that was a motorama car.
2. The top, trunk, doors, hood center console, rear deck lid, fenders were all modified to prints.
3. The car is an early 54 frame and body, there are two hood pulls.
4. For a power train it has a 53 motor, a real 066 head and a real 53 valve cover.
5. Many old timers in this hobby have helped with this project and it is not just one person, but you are more than welcome to trash them all if you like and I can give you all the names.
6. It was only taken to Bloomington so John Kennedy and Steve Newsom could see the car up close.

I have a few other acquaintances who dispute those facts.

Here are a few more close-ups of the ZR1 when it was at my show just a couple weeks earlier. This is the same car because Harlan Charles told me it was going with him to Bloomington. I think it was serial no. 00005

I wish I had taken the time to really document that car better. Also the Carlisle Blue Grand Sport Coupe we had was also a low number like 03 or 04...
