It was free.

It's really a long story... but I got this:

Marlin .30-30 repeater. In VERY good condition with a moderately ok Tasco scope. Haven't shot it yet, but want to!

I always liked the Marlin side ejection as opposed to the Winchester top. Specially with a scope.

I'll have a better opinion once I shoot it. The action is real tight and precise. It seems very well made.

Ok... here's how it goes... I have been helping a friend with computer and internet issues for some time. She is an older lady; nearing 80, but still has all her beans counting. Sharp old grandma, really.

Her son had this, and left it at her house... so I offered to buy it for $50.00... more of a joke, but he had no want for it and felt it would be too hard to transport back to Texas (not at all). So he said "Mom, keep the $50, have a nice dinner!"

"Mom" says, "keep the rifle, you have more than earned it!"

So... that's how I got it... I did earn it... But it still was free... in a strange way. Barter, yea, that's it.

Assuming of course, you have taken the proper legal procedure to register the firearm according to federal and state laws before openly admitting casual possession on the internet?

I know you have to know better but I can't tell if your being sarcastic or not....

There is no federal registration of firearms - Sole exception, NFA items.

There is no registration in the state of California of rifles or shotguns. That said, person to person sales (this includes gifts) of all firearms must be through a licensed firearms dealer using a Private Party Transfer form. The dealer gets $10 to fill out the paper work and the state gets $25, then you must wait 10 days to pick up your gun....

I know many people in CA ignore the "dealer transfer requirement" for personal sales - but were I a CA resident, I personally wouldn't tempt the "Serve and Protect" types out there....

Door frames are expensive to repair and my little Yorkie is such a sweetie.

meh. I haven't dealt with it yet... The owner is in another state, so the paperwork gets sticky... and since it's locked up in a cabinet, I don't particularly care.

I will deal with it some time.

It's like this, I have bought all my prior firearms in Delaware. This one has been around 40+ years, prior to all the paperwork requirements. Just like my shotgun, no history.

YIKES! I wasn't aware that these had passed.

Maybe someone will take this to court. Just when honest people think Heller and McDonald actually make a difference these cats pass this which no doubt will be tied up in court for another 20yrs (all on the tax payers dime of course).

Which brings to mind a question. In the mean time, as cash strapped as CA is, I have to wonder where the $$$ to maintain all these databases is gonna come from?

Databases are cheap. Seriously.

If you have a statewide information system, adding another database to it is chump change.

Hell, I could build a SQL Server database to track any number of things in a day. It would take an apps team to develop the app another week. Deploy to the web and done.

Yea but you have to pay someone to do that. Then you have to pay people to input the data and maintain it.

Now far as how cheap you can do it, imagine that the Govt has hired someone to do it.... That means the most inept people in the world are going to do the work and at the highest price possible.

Even here in VA where things are pretty gun friendly, this stuff is evident - Over the Xmas holiday the VA State Police background check system was overwhelmed by all the people buying guns. I personally waited 11 hrs for my background check to go thru....

The ATF has a database for NFA items. It's called the National Firearms Registration and Transfer record (NFR&TR).... Do a search and see how good that was working for them.

The Govt can/does F Up anything/everything. Whats cheap and easy for anyone else is an expensive and monumentous task for any Govt.

I won't disagree with that... I forget that my experiences are with Delaware government, and for the most part, it works quite well, but it's small.

I did work for VDOT back in the mid-90s. Downtown Richmond on Broad, just off I-95. I swear, dude, if you didn't graduate from VMI, you weren't worth jack shit. Everyone in the exec lot had VMI stickers; I always wondered what the % of poseurs was...

VDOT had some real winners, but for the most part, they had a snotty upper management. We called them the "Ivory Tower" and they just stuck their noses out when needed. Very odd environment. And 15+ years ago, there was still a lot of racism and infighting. I was a consultant, and regular staffers had issue with consultants... ugh. Political nightmare.
