And I remember when gas was .30 a gallon! Yes, it wasn't that long ago. We had an Esso station (yea, before Exxon) at the corner. It's now a laundry mat. They would actually fill up the car, check the oil and tires, wash the windshield and top off the washer fluid... and then take a personal check and GIVE YOU CHANGE for it.

Were they perfect? na, but they tried hard and gave great service. They were competent, tho... good guys. One retired to WV, the other became a prison guard and he retired a few years back. I know one, Leo, the guy who went to WV, passed away a bunch of years ago. Donno about his business partner, Jim. I ran into him once in recent enough years (like 10-15).

I am 47 and it was in my life time. I also remember the first embargo... the 2nd one, too... older friends made money in the 2nd one, taking cars through for the busy working stiffs. I didn't get my license until 1981.

even-odd days for gas, $5.00 max fill-ups! such fun.

I remember my Mom arguing with the kid at the gas station when he offered her "regular" and it was unleaded and she debated the semantics that it couldn't be "regular" because it was unleaded... ugh... she could be too smart for her own good sometimes. I think she honestly felt she was being ripped off or something.

I pumped gas in 1969 and 70 at .26 to .32/gallon. And during a "gas war" we dropped to .17 once. I didn't have to wear one of those uniforms either. But we would wash the windows, check the oil, tires and fill the battery with water.

I worked in a Standard Station the summers of my junior and senior years in HS and also the freshman and sophomore years in college during the 60s. Out here in western ND gas was always 35.9 for regular and 39.9 for ethyl. We always like to pump ethyl. In Fargo ND where I went to NDSU, gas was often down to 19 cents a gallon for regular. They had a lot of gas wars there. Yes, we did wear the striped Standard Oil uniforms, checked the oil, washed the windows and often checked the tires.

During those years I overhauled my 272 Y-block 1956 Ford (I put 312 heads and 4-barrel out of a 1956 Mercury on it with dual exhausts) and also a friend's 1960 Chevy 283. OF course, I had a shop grind the heads and bore the cylinders 10 over. I did all of the tear down and putting back together. Damn it is nice to remember the years when nothing seemed impossible. I wish I had that brash self-confidence these days.

You can trust your car to the man who wears the star....That was me working at Jenson's Texaco in the Big O all through high school....went from a buck an hour to 1.25 and of course could bring my car in anytime it wasn't busy and work on it.....64 Polara 500.

I remember when the bells rang we hit the pumps with a full service deal.....check the oil and the tires and also my personal favorite...wash the windshields....remember the short skirts back in those days....and you know the girls thought you were staring at the buggy windshields.....nevermind.....

I did 3, Esso, Atlantic Richfield and Gulf (where the race team was).
I was driving a tow truck at 16.

I am getting old. I forgot about how hard I washed on some windshields trying to get them clean. Some took so much work.

At the Esso station, we had a contract to wash the State Police cars.
Since they had rubber flooring instead of carpet, we'd hose em down and scrub the floors with soap and a broom.

The owner, Yogi, would drive the cars to and from the station. He lost the contract when one of the officers saw him pulling over a buddy with the lights and siren blasting.

Yep, I remember it got to .199 here during one of those gas wars. It was typically around .259 when I started driving. I remember we had an M&H gas station where they'd do all that service with a fill-up (along with emptying the ash trays), and you'd get a tumbler or some other trinket from their little treasure chest to boot.

P.S. - just for a reality check, right now gas is about as high here as anywhere in the country, about 4.25. It shot up about 40 cents overnight, some BS about a refinery or pipeline shutting down for maintenance. A-holes!

I remember premium for my vette was 85 cents - 95 cents a gallon and then on my next vette I could get 101 for $2.49 a gallon and thought that was absolutely outrageous. All the places had a pump with it. Now, none of them do.

That's the same time frame for me. Same price, but there was a "war" going on several times a year. Mine was a Pure station, later changed to Union 76.
Never did understand why I worked 12 hrs a day, 6 days a week for peanuts? At the time I guess I thought it was fun.

I worked at the K-T Oil Fina station.

Working for peanuts is all very fine, but I can show you a better time.......Baby you can drive my car.

I got to wash the Fina and independent pumpers trucks. Freaking filthy, oily, greasy, inside and out. It would take me 3-4 hours just to clean the outside.
