So the PS pump has been warning me for months.

This morning it started rattling like it was grinding rocks. I pulled it into the Garage and took off the belt. Then the PS pulley and some dust cap that is behind it. There is all kinds of debris stuck in the back of the dust cap and the face of the pump. Not really interested in what it is at the moment.

I touched on this topic before but I'm going to narrow it down. The shaft rattles around by hand now.

My question in two parts.

1. Rebuilt pump time or try to fix the pump?

2. basics concerning a PS pump R/R. I've never done a PS pump in all my car projects.

Looks like there are two big bolts holding it place. Then there is a 90° elbow coming out at 10: O'clock but that is all I can see right now.

Throw it out and get a new one, they're cheap.

I removed the pump and bracket as one piece, although your 84 may be a bit different. I don't remember any dust cap on mine. I hope you're not confusing it with the smog pump! The PS pump requires a special tool to remove the pulley.

SEEE!!!

what is that pump looking thing right on top next to the PS reservoir?

The reason I had so many questions is because it doesn't look right!!

If you don't know what something is you can always start the car then hit it with a 10lb sledge and see what quits working.

Not like any PS pump I've seen. Sure looks like a AIR (smog)pump to me.

^^look, I'm not very smart.....but I knew it looked funny to begin with.

I just didn't see the PS hoses going down below. Not to mention that reservoir sitting right next to it...

...Oh well. I'm glad CCs friend showed me the light.

A rebuilt Smog pump is $62 at Kragen. Then you get $12 back when you return a core.

Bogus or CC or Case, retitle this thread please. Name it something with Smog Pump in the title and make sure it makes fun of me at the same time.

That may be some of the best technical advice to ever yet be put forth on this forum!

Oh you guys stop it with the apologies. CC and I sit around and make fun of everyone else. It's all in good fun.

I'm the first to laugh at myself, I wouldn't expect any less of you guys.

I'd like to suggest that we all joke a bit more with each other to break the seriousness. I know that there is a lot of animosity from the CF.

We should set another tone over here. A friendly humorous banter sometimes gets the difficult things said and out in the open.

Back on topic....it's just funny, I was looking at that thing and wondering "how the hell does it pump the fluid?" I guess that elbow could be a return line..but where is the pressure side?????

As far as the smog pump is concerned, I pulled it out tonight and I have another one being delivered to Kragen tomorrow.

This is a 30 minute install. It took almost that long getting it out....not knowing what needed to come out and in what order.

Not to mention....freekin' GM What the hell??? They have 9mm 10mm 13mm 14mm and 15mm nuts and bolts on this one component!!!!

What where they thinking? Surely a 14mm would work where they need a large bold and a 10mm in the small places.....but hell no...I grab a 10mm and LO it doesn't fit....I have to back to the box and find the obscure 9mm wrench. WTH

They were probably thinking it'd be worked on by someone with enough technical prowess to differentiate a power steering pump from a smog pump.

Hate to resurrect this thread but since it is a power steering topic.

Once I got everything apart, it seemed that the power steering reservoir Cap is leaking fluid all over the place. That black tank had fluid and grime all over the top sides etc....the lines were all oily and down below is awfully dirty.

I put the lines back on and they seem to be holding.

A) are these an easy item to find?
B) is there a gasket you can buy for it? or do you just buy the cap?

ONE LINE WAS DISCONTINUED BY GM IN 03 & THE OTHER IN 06...YOU WILL HAVE TO CHECK AFTERMARKET SOURCES ON THOSE....NOT SURE ABOUT THE GASKET THING THOUGH SORRY

There's a gasket on the later models (92).
Question: Is your reservior too full when hot? If so, a $2 turkey baster will pull some out.
A little grime on the reservior is normal. Mine's always slightly dirty even in a clean engine compartment.

well no, the Cap has a dipstick on it for checking the level. So the level is correct.

And yes, since I had to empty the tank prior to removal, the wife is pissed about the turkey baster.

MAX, I think the Lines or OK. the leak has to be originating from the top. If the lines are leaking how would the fluid get on top of the little tank.

P/S LUID IS A HYDRAULIC FLUID MEANING IT WILL EXPAND WHEN WARMED UP...THE CAP ALSO SERVES AS A SORT OF VENT SO WHEN THE FLUID GETS HOT & EXPANDS GASES WILL COME FROM RESERVOIR & START VENTING..JUST LIKE BILL SAID EVERY VEHICLE, IF NOT CLEANED REGULARLY, THAT IS DRIVEN AWHILE, WILL EXHIBIT SOME SORT OF FLUID RESIDUE AROUND CAP

Would that be on the smog pump, or the PS pump?

I'd make sure that when it's installed, it's not cockeyed or anything like that.

On my smog pump, I grease the bearings when it squeaks a little bit. Not really serviceable, but works for a while. I'm just too cheap to buy a smog pump eliminator.

LOL

And I thought the pump on the driver's side and the reservoir on the passenger side for LT1's was funny.

I'm afraid to guess at this point...

J/K, it is the smog pump again.

I think this time, I am going to tear this one open and see if I can get to that bearing. I know that NAPA has all sizes of 'good' bearings...you just have to be resourceful and be able to get to the old one.......

It's like that time I rebuilt the tensioner on my serp belt. Supposedly it is not repairable and it is put together with rivets. A new one is $55 but the bearing itself is from NAPA was only ~$10

The bearing was not a "listed" available part for the tensioner, we were able to measure the OD and the ID of the bearing and find a suitable replacement from the "bin o bearings" that NAPA has.

I think I'm going to tear into this smog pump and look prior to buying another CARDONE rebuilt smog pump that will only last 18 months.

If you could figure out how to replace that bearing that would be beneficial to everyone, but when I took mine apart to gut it, the thing looked pretty hopeless.

Naw, that bearing is pressed into place. I couldn't figure out how to get it apart.

I guess for $60 it is easier to get another pump and put it in.

Removing the fins from the pump will put less load on the bearings. I recall the rear race is integrated with the case and the front is impossible to get to without pressing the shaft out.
