... subject line says it al(most) - I'm not getting quite the mileage or response I would expect from my stock 1985/L98/A4/3.07, so I'm wondering if there is a traditional tune-up for an L98 or if I should look further.

There are basic items. Rotor, cap, wires, plugs, pcv valve. I'm doing all that if it EVER warms up. thepartsladi has an L98 tune up kit for $72. Has everything but the pcv valve. The timing can be checked and set as well.
Then there is the ever popular seafoam! |

I had the tune up done and repleced the egr valve thinking this would smooth out the slightly rocky idle. After doing that the idle remained the same. It wouldn't be bad if the engine/exhaust had the appropriate chugga-chugga sound to accompany the rough idle.

I have given up on locating the slight miss problem that has plagued my car for the last year. Replaced, you name it, ran 20 Datamaster scans, increased fuel pressure, and it still has that little shimmy. Now I turn up the bass and volume on the radio and its not so annoying anymore

Wow. I remember when I was a bit younger and more foolish. I had valve noise in my blazer. So I turned up the radio and ignored it, until I broke the crank on the highway at 70 mph. Out of oil. Maybe that's not such a good idea? Matthew |

That slight miss at idle, the Vette is just telling you it's still alive
On a more serious note, I bought my Vette new in 91 and it did that for ever. There always has been a miss at a light every 10 seconds or so. It's just some sort of overlapping valve action, that is way harder to control in an V8 than with those dwarf engines from Germany and Japan. |

I think Woodstock can vouch for me, he has helped me with my Datamaster scans, the miss is something minor I haven't figured out. I will conquer this evenually. I love listening to the engine, I just wish it was a little smoother. Hell I play with it every weekend, it's my passion, I won't let it break down.

More than 15 years old and 90K+ miles its one of the most overlooked part(s)in a C4 tuneup. Cheers! |

John A lot of debate on that. Some recommend using Rich at Cruizing performance who cleans the injectors unless they are multec which are not on your car. I have the "NEW" Accel's in my car .I have about 4K on the Accel with no problems . Hows that gonna effect the NCRS? You can get the Accel's in either 22 lbs or 24 lbs very resonable at Summit. And if I do not have the document we can get on where you can do the job without removing the runners. Its an all day job at least , cause you'll want to clean the plenum inside and so forth |

Interesting. What's the stock replacement for an 87 L98? 22lb? Is this a place where a little more is better?

read some of the discussions on CF. Summit says 24lbs. Most over there say 22lbs. 24lbs could make it burn rich , so I've heard, seems the masses are split.I went with the 24lbs cause I'm gonna do an intake/exhaust mod. At this time I have had no problems , however I have not hooked it up to a computer |

It is 22 lb. At least this is the rated flow at a rated pressure. But they're only actually pumping like 19 #/hr at the pressures your system operates at. 85's used 24 lb injectors and operated at a lower pressure than your car. Actual flow from the 85 injectors (with a 85 pressure regulator) is going to be the same as your car obviously because there were no changes in 86 to require more or less fuel. Putting bigger injectors is kinda pointless in most cases because the computer is expecting a certain amount of fuel for each pulse. Extra fuel from larger injectors shows up at the 02 sensor and the computer then has to compensate by reducing the duty cycle. Unless the injectors are maxing out there's no need to upsize them. Summit probably says 24# because there aren't too many aftermarket 22# available. |

I went with the Ford SVO injectors from Five-o Motorsports, after allot of threads, reviews etc., I sure hope the ones I got were not rebuilt, removed or anything less then new. The bags they were in didn't look factory, just baggies. So I could blame the miss on them, but the thought of replacing them again is agonizing. They all Ohm out at 15.1 to 15.4 so they are consistent. They are the yellow tops which I think are rated at 22 lbs.

Accel yellow top 24 lbs/hr
Bosch- yellow (orange) top 19 lbs/hr pink top 21 lbs/hr (not a pretty sight, but correct for stock engines) blue top 24 lbs/hr My understanding, Bosch are rated with lower fuel pressure, therefore a lower 21 lbs/hr rating should be a perfect match with our stock fuel pressure. The MAF system has more room to adjust w/o any changes. With MAP the calibrations in the eprom should be adjusted, if going for 24 lbs/hr. The other day I came across some interesting values how the Hypertechs are calibrated. 87 and 88 were set at 23 lbs/hr, unfortunately I don't know the stock rating yet. The 91 Hypertech was set at 22 lbs/hr, just like my stock chip. |

I also replaced the injectors with the pink Ford injectors from Five O Motorsports on my '85. Old stock injectors had about 100k and still worked fine.
I recently used some MAF cleaner on my MAF. First time I have cleaned the MAF on this car after 13 years and 90k miles of ownership. I never messed with it as I always figured the burn off relay would make cleaning unnecessary. Seems to have a bit better part throttle response now. I have done this MAF cleaning all the time on my Mustangs as they don't have a burn off relay and they are notorious for getting K and N oil on the MAF wire. A can of MAF cleaner only cost about five bucks and it takes about five minutes to remove, clean and replace. I also routinely change plugs, wire, cap and rotor, at least every two years before smog check. It is amazing how fast the inside of a distributor cap gets corroded. Changing the fuel filter is routine maintenance also. Get a can of throttle body cleaner and spray it down. Go to an empty parking lot so you don't piss off the neighbors, take off the inlet hose, start it up and spray it down while feathering the throttle (it will want to bog when you spray it down). Make sure the bottle straw doesn't shoot into the throttle body (happened to a co-worker). You can also just take off the throttle body and clean it. Do the basic tune up stuff before the injectors. |

I sold my old injectors a long time ago for $60. New pink Ford injectors from Fivo O Motorsports weren't that expensive (site shows $305 for 22 pounders). Seems like a good price for quality injectors. http://www.fiveomotorsport.com/Injector_SetsTPI.asp#caddy I hate to pass on conjecture, but I wouldn't buy anything with an Accel label on it. |
