When I see things like this: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=2127260
I wonder if I am God's gift to mechanics or just not a complainer. I don't think doing the heater core is that "hard," it just takes time. Overall it's a learning experience on how to remove a seat and pieces of the dash! Anyone else agree with me? |

I know bogus has done it, and I believe he still has most of his fingers.

Well, if I had someone tell me they'd do it for $180 plus parts, I might let them do it. But since I think wrenching is therapeutic and I own a later C4 I'd still probably do it myself.

I will say, there are other jobs I would rather be doing on a 84-89 car than a heater core. Mainly because big hands don't work well in tight spaces.

hm. There are more fun things in life... like root canal and hemroid surgery, but none more satisfying than getting a heater core replaced... and none more annoying.
Yea, I have all my fingers... but there are so damned many fiddly parts and an overall lack of space. As a reference, I swapped a heater core in a friends 1981 Ford Escort. Took 1 hour. Seriously. I did buy a used OEM heater core from vette2vette. My logic was simple - the replacement parts were generating a rep of leaking within a year, I didn't want to do that again!!! |

Can't be any worse than a heater core in an AC-equipped 1983 Mercury Crapi. Plus it was 25 degrees out and I had to go inside to thaw my fingers every 15 minutes.
I haven't tried the vette heater core yet. I run my heater at least every 2 months or so to prevent it from rusting out. I'm with bogus, once you go with "lifetime of replacement" overseas parts on this stuff, the headache never ends. I'm going to nurse these oem parts along as long as I can. |

I did it in my '85 a few years back and if I had it to do again I would but I wouldn't be happy. I feel a hard job is severe manual labor and this is not the case with heater core replacement, it is more of a strain mentally and that is my weak point. lol

I replaced mine this summer, thinking it was going to be this huge deflowering for me. When I was done I thought, "that wasn't too bad." Even for a first timer it wouldn't be too bad, as opposed to replacing a cam, tranny work, etc.

Yeah if you really want some fun replace a ZF6 or do a clutch swap on one. The c-beam will test your patience. Stabbing the tranny into the new clutch for the first time will also.

Funny you should mention that. ZF sitting on floor. T/O bearing came apart. Doubt if it has 5,000 miles on it. My second least favorite thing to do! |

If I were you I'd buy an ac delco bearing then compare it to the one in the autozone clutch set. I'm curious if its the same chinese crap. I bought a zr1 clutch set and it had a slightly different bearing. I wonder if its any better. It looked like its been on the shelf for 10 years. In fact I think I have a new spare one if you're interested. Ac delco is the only one sold seperate and its $85. Unless you can manage to get centerforce to send you one. There's also appears different in photos. I wonder who makes it. This is a common failure lately.

Id rather pay someone to do that and I normally prefer doing everything myself. Did one in a 67 Camaro when I was young, that was enough.

I replaced mine last year. The total for the job including parts was $250. That was enough for me to say 'eff it' and let the shop do it. He did tell me that it was relatively simple and would be something that I could do, but it was a little bit of a pain. I figured it was worth it to let him mess with it. |

I think my heat doesn't work. It's probably a bad heater core.
I guess it's a good thing I live in South Florida. |
