Thanks to me, you will never again ask yourself "What does the underside of a C3 hood look like naked?"

The answer is ... a lot like fiberglass.

God, that question has been plaguing me at night for months. Now I can finally sleep again. Thanks, Trae!

JK, did you clean and paint it? Gonna do a custom airbrish on it or something?

Its not painted yet, I'm applying the primer tonight.

Here's the artist rendition of the final product. We'll see how close I actually get to it.

Matthew

That will be the underside . . . hopefully.

On the top side, I'm adding black vinyl stripes similar to those commercially available, but my own design to match the flames underneath. Here's the paper mock-up of those:

Are you going to do the underside with paint? Hopefully not vinyl.

If you are going to paint it, are you going to have a mask made or hand mask it?

I do like the underhood design.

Yes, the underside will be painted.
And yes, I'm having a few masks cut from vinyl. I still doubt I'll be able to get the break lines perfect, so I'm planning on having a pinstriper do the outlines before the final clear. :thumbright:

I'm one of the lucky ones whose wife likes cars, and she loves to drive this one.

It has been, and continues to be, quite a bit of work to maintain.
So we have a deal: help work on it = help drive it.

It works pretty well.

Interesting, I haven't done any custom chit in a while.
I know there's somw vinyl with low adhesive but I haven't used any. And I'm going to get a roll of the 3m mask that can be cut on a vinyl machine, just don't have any projects right now.

I've also been wanting to play with the Auto-Air colors since their water based.

And cursing our forum vendor, Kustom Shop, I noticed that they have House of Kolor pearls premixed in small containers at very reasonable prices. I haven't bought any HoK lately because of the price and that you had to buy a quart.

I know you've all been on pins and needles waiting on an update.

Here's where I'm at currently. Next step will be to have a pinstriper do a black outline around the white, and a red outline around the lettering. Then on to the clear.

It really wasn't all that bad. The worst part for me was removing the black I had applied a few years ago. The insulation clips popped off, glue and all, with a little effort. And underneath the finish, it was pretty smooth - I only had to fill a few very small areas.

Details please. I'm thinking of doing something similar but I want to do a '77 style flag under the hood and I'm thinking a decal would be best. Got a good source or contact info for something like that?

A source for decals or a source for masks?

I'm assuming this is the flag you're looking for:
Resized Image
Unfortunately, I don't know any suppliers of full-color decals that size. I'm sure someone could do it, but it might be cost-prohibitive.

You could do it with colored vinyl if you applied it in layers - silver, then red, black, and white on top of that. I briefly considered that very thing for mine, but I was leery of the vinyl on the underside of the hood. Was afraid I would open the hood one day to find it had fallen off, and become a big molten blob on my headers.

Mine is all paint, so all I needed was custom masks - colors were irrelevant. I created all of the artwork myself, and got a local sign shop to cut the vinyl. Still relatively costly, but I couldn't have masked that without them.

After primer, my steps were pretty straight forward:

1. Painted entire center area white (inside the "structure").
2. Laid down the "positive" mask - which covered everything that isn't red.
3. Painted the entire underside red.
4. Removed the letters from the positive mask (I had those cut into it, but left them attached until this step).
5. Painted the letters black (after masking everything I didn't want overspray on).
6. Re-masked the letters with regular automotive masking tape.
7. Laid down the "negative" mask, offset from the positive, to create the shadow areas.
8. Painted the "open" areas with darkened red.
9. Removed all masks.
10. Touched up areas as needed and applied clear to all.

I thought about incorporating a cross flag logo as well. But since this is my first attempt at this kind of job, I decided that would be a little too complex to try to paint. I'm pretty happy with what I've done so far.

Any other details you need?

Thanks you covered all the bases. I'm still unsure what direction I want to go...I might just sand it all smooth and finish it in black primer.

I do know some very good freehand artists...maybe one can create a flag emblem on the underside and I can go that route.

Trae, the vinyl you used, was it the standard stuff they use for lettering? I've heard there is low adhesive vinyl available.

Most guys (like Foose) use 3M mask on a roll cut on a computer. It's certainly less expensive than vinyl but you have to have a source to cut it. I've been wanting to ask Andy if his vinyl machine would cut it.

The flag emblem should be easy enough to digitize. I would think that you could even scan it from one of those "Corvette Parking" signs or something like that.

You may want to pick up a can of Duplicolor Hi Temp Ceramic
black. It's a satin color. It's good to 500 degrees. I got it at WallyMart. Painted my chambered exhaust on the C4 with it & it's holding up very well.

It's a nice rattle can to have in the shop anyway for brackets, etc.

It was the standard stuff - the guy I used apparently didn't have anything specifically for masking.

For the most part, it worked well. However, the part masking the white was on for a few days and was really starting to stick. When we removed it, some of the adhesive stayed on the hood. We dabbed it with some turpentine to soften it, then it wiped right off. Not really a problem, but it was an annoyance.

Everywhere else, the standard vinyl worked perfectly, maybe because it was only on long enough for the paint to tack up. But I can definitely see the benefit of a low adhesive. If I take on another project like this, I may seek out a local source. Thanks for the info.

One of the things you see is "print thru" even when using something like the 3M fine line plastic tape (the blue stuff0, you pull it and can see where the tape was. It will show up when cleared. That's why I was asking about the adhesive.
It's also why the 3M mask is nice, it comes off very easy and you can cut it while it's on the car.

Anyway, nice job on tour hood.
You can see my last custom paint job in our "roadracing" section under "Fast Karts", the one that's white & orange. It was all done with the fineline masking tape by hand.

It's not going to be perfect, but I'm no painter so I consider it an accomplishment. I learned a lot in the process, so it has been a success.

Really nice job on the kart! Cool fade job.

Regarding the "print thru", I know exactly what you're talking about, as I've had that happen on other non-auto projects. I didn't notice any of that where the vinyl was, but the paint wasn't exactly glass-smooth either , so maybe it was there and I just didn't notice. I can say I didn't see anything like that after I applied the clear. And for the few areas where I needed regular tape, I used the green stuff and it left no traces.

Thanks, the paint took about a mile of masking tape but, it was a hell of a lot easier than building the bodywork.
You wouldn't believe the mixture of paints on that kart. The white & black was PPG urethane, the orange was some old Sherwin Williams acrylic I had laying around, House of Color purple pearl. The rose pearl was actually Boyd Cottington model car paint and the little pinons were Testors model car paint out of the little bottle. All cleared with PPG 2 part urethane.
Everyone told me you couldn't mix different paints over top of each other-----BS.

Update time!

I got the hood back from the pinstriper on Friday, and applied the clear Saturday. Gonna give it a few days to fully harden, then buff 'er out.
