Nothing special, nothing sexy. In fact, it's the opposite of the kind of car most of us want, but it's my son's first car. I posted here a while back saying I was looking for a used car for my son. I found one. A 2003 Hyundai Elantra GT. The GT badge is funny, it's a 2L, and doesn't have much horsepower. But that's ideal to keep him out of trouble. The GT refers to the trim. The car has 74k, pretty nice looking little car. It's like driving an oversized go cart.

I'm actually impressed by the car, it's really a nice value. And I kind of like putting around in it. Naturally, I have to drive it to be sure it's ok.

Dale I'm starring at a 03 Elantra in our staff parking lot now. One of our teachers owns it, 109K she has had zero problems with it. Hers is the Gt trim also. Kind of a shit knuckle brown color. Hyundai dealer went through the whole engine and drive train for free at 98K. Thought that was interesting since it has the 10yr/100k warranty.

The 10/100k warranty isn't transferrable. This one is red, with black side trim and a spoiler. A nice looking car. Leather seats, power windows/locks, all the stuff that you'd expect. A friend had one, and highly recommended the car. Internet research told me it's a pretty good buy, so I bought it.

It sounds like a good choice for his first car. Hope he is careful.

My daughter wanted a pickup so we got her a full sized Chevy with the steel rear step bumper. Senior year of high school she went 1/2 day to the high school, then 1/2 day at college so she needed a vehicle. The truck was a good choice, she got rear ended twice. Both times there was no damage to the truck but the kid(s) that hit her tore up their 'ricers' pretty good.

A truck wouldn't be so good here. Lots of snow in the winter.

He's lazy and unmotivated. The car is a carrot. He's 18, only has his temps. I bought the car, let him help pick it out, and told him it's my car. In order for him to get use of the car he has to:

- Get his license.
- Get a job.

Until then, it's my toy. After he gets those two, we'll work on going to college. Kids are much different these days. I got my license the day it was legal, and bought a car off of my sister for $50 shortly after that. Dad helped me put a new axle in the car, brakes, and a tune up.

I still can't believe a car has to appear in the driveway to motivate the little turd, but other parents tell me similar stories. I suspect he has had it too good for too long, (spoiled).

I certainly remember the snow after 15 years in Valley City (Medina County) and you are right about a pickup being a poor choice in the snow. Guess I have been very lucky, both girls got huge college scholarships and great jobs. My son is doing well in the USAF and just needs one more course for his associates degree.

You're lucky, or doing something right that I'm not, or maybe a little of both.

Be happy he even wants to drive himself... my nephew doesn't really care to get his liscense.. he wants his mom to cart him around where ever he wants to go... he actually said this..

I don't think it's a parents thing. I think it is just endemic to the apathy that exists today.

They hear it in the news that things suck. They hear it from there parents that things suck. They hear it from their friends that things suck... so why bother? Everything sucks.

I have heard that around here a lot. The kids have lost interest in driving... and I wonder if the parents, again, have bitch so much about the traffic, the idiots and such that it has sucked the desire right out of them?

Dale I have a lot of students that aren't motivated to drive. They would rather stay home a play video games or text. I couldn't wait to get my license at 15.
Seems like a generational thing going on at this moment.
Erin my daughter had to get a job first, than a car and if she wanted to drive it she had to learn to maintain it and fix it. That really opened a can of worms. She was driving a garden tractor at 8.
Like I said before wait until he has to take a date out on his bike instead of his car.

Dale I work with a couple lab managers that their children had no desire to drive or even get a drivers license. It really complicated the parents lives by driving the kids all over the place. Finally peer pressure kicked in and they both now have their license.
My attitude towards driving was almost a right of passage to adulthood and responsibility. Of course it didn't hurt to have a dad that was really into cars.
He will come around soon! then its the first speeding ticket, first flat, first fenderbender, oh yea door dings,
second speeding ticket, getting lost in Indy, dead battery when its -20 below. You get the idea. Erin

I'm out of touch with most kids today.

But, Saturday I'm instructing in a "Street Survival" school put on by BMW ans SCCA. The 30 or so 16 year old kids will be apathetic when they get there, they'll grumble thru the first session and first classroom. By lunchtime, they'll be enjoying sliding their cars in the water, doing panic stops and emergency lane changes.
Almost all of them will say they had a good time by the end of the day learning car control.
