Thought a megathread would be fun...

This was my project yesterday, getting the rebuilt injectors installed and buttoning up the top end. Not so much a tech thread, this isn't a step by step, but gives a few pointers along the way.

Newly rebuilt injectors from Jon:

Photobucket

New Mr Gasket 146 kit. You can see it fits the port size very well, only minor trimming for my siamesed runners:

Photobucket

Starting point (obviously already torn down to remove the injectors):

Photobucket

Injectors in. I noticed the gasket push pins didn't line up 100% with the manifold. Not sure if it's the edelbrock intake or the gaskets. I slotted the tabs a bit on the gasket, otherwise they bunched up:

Photobucket

I prefer to put the driver's side runner on first, then I fitted the fuel rail. One tip is to put all the lower runner bolts in before you put it on, otherwise the long ones won't fit past the valve covers:

Photobucket

I then loosely fit the passenger side runner once the fuel rail is on but not 100% buttoned up:

Photobucket

It is very important to pressurize the system now to check for leaks! I didn't and that was my mistake. I know better and just plain forgot. So after I had put the plenum partially on, I remembered. When I primed the pump, fuel sprayed everywhere!!! Ugh. Had to tear it apart again and found a nicked o-ring on my injector. Now why GM would put sharp edges on a fuel rail assembly is beyond me, but be careful:

Photobucket

The only solution to this is to replace the o-ring, obviously. I know our good friend Jon at FIC would have sent me one, but that's a waste of everyone's time and money. I went to O'Reilly and bought a fel-pro injector o-ring kit. This is viton/fuel safe. Make sure you give the counter monkey the part number #ES70599. It's 2.99 for a set of four. I almost punched the moron in the face who was working behind the counter when he told me there was no way to get a fuel injector o-ring without a car make/model:

Photobucket

After replacing that, I refitted everything and pressurized the system....success!

Put everything back together with a few other minor hiccups, but nothing I couldn't handle. Because of the nicked o-ring, the job took twice as long as it should have. Oh well. Here she is as she sits:

Photobucket

A few other little tips:

-I found I had a problem with a few of the bolts. I ended up chasing the threads in one of the manifold fuel rail mounts as well as one hole. I think it was due to the bolts, though. They had previous antiseize on them and I added a little more. I think there was just some gunk in there and it made it hard to thread. So I took all the bolts and cleaned them up with a die set. Remember they are metric, I think M8x1.25. Then I applied new antiseize and that helped significantly.

-Remember the tv cable goes under the runners, the other cables over. Don't forget to reset the tv cable when done

-Leave the lower runners not torqued when you install the upper plenum, then torque altogether.

-Don't forget to reattach the MAP sensor under the plenum, as well as the CTS, TPS, IAC.

Matthew

So.....who's next???

Usta was.
It's still uncluttered except for the kitchen remodel crap on the work bench.

Here's my spring project.

Building a back up trans, and installing bigger injectors.
Lots of fun on a superram car.

Hopefully my projects are done and all I have to do is drive it.

Only thing that I should have to do now is work with Mick on the tune.

Today I put a new seal on the bottom of the garage door, but I deemed it not picture-worthy :-P

Now that I have the car home, I'll be dusting off my to-do list. Among other things, still on the list from 2 years ago is a stereo install, but I haven't got a round tuit yet.

Couple of projects in the last month, nothing major.
R&R crossframe brace to eliminate exhaust contact that was driving me nuts.
New Raybestos front rotors. CarQuest ground the old ones on a flywheel grinder and the pedal still pulsed. No more with the new ones.
New Hella E-code headlamps with 60/55 Xenon blue bulbs, like 'em a lot.
I mounted the headlight harness connectors on the side marker housings like I had seen on other C4's.
Swapped seat backs to put the slightly worn bolster on the passenger side.
New A/C accumulator/drier.(polished)
Painted a silver band on the alternator.
Mount C4 emblem on the intake plenum.
Oil change and grease job.
Odo. turned 64k today, that's 10k in the past year.

Nice work Joe... giving me ideas. I painted my alternator band red a few years ago but I like the black and silver look you got going on there. I also like the idea of mounting the connectors on top of the side markers. Very good

Looks great Joe!

I replaced my throttle body top plate with a polished one that has the C4 logo on it... no pics though. It was overcast yesterday.

Matthew, That is an awesome write up. One question though..how do you reset the TV cable? I found it once on CF but can't seem to find it again.

Find the little black square right by the bracket that's on the TV cable. Press it in (I use a 6" socket extension, works better than a screwdriver) and then pull the cable back towards the firewall and release the black button. Then go in the car and press the gas pedal all the way to the floor - you should hear it click forward a few notches. Done.

Rear brake upgrade (finally):

Don't have the calipers yet, but they are Wilwood Superlites. And of course an appropriately sized master cylinder to match...

Nope. That ship sailed a long time ago.

Of course when I sell it, the ad will say "garage kept, never raced."

I have done U Joints, SKF wheel bearings, new brakes (rotors and pads), and will raise the front up a little. If I wasnt married....LOL.
I really need to redo the interior. I dont know if I have it in me.
I do need to retune the car. I have permission from my wife to get a laptop. Hopefully I can get a code from TTS/AKM Cables for my purchase from years ago so I can datalog etc. Last time they took weeks to get me a code, when I reformatted my laptop. And now I will be going from WXP Pro to Windows 7.

Sweet. I had started a frame off on a 69 when I was 14 but the guy that mom was dating at the time took it with him when they split up. All that saved dishwashing money later went to buy an 81 Camaro.
