Just picked up my new 383 from the builder - and although it dyno'ed fine he says that the opti is very worn inside and will take a crap soon. I figure that I should probably replace it anyway before I drop it into the car and I can keep the old opti as an emergency spare.

I have been researching the forums and looking at ebay and amazon - and there are so many opinions and options that I am thinking about flipping a 3-sided coin between Delphi, AC Delco, MSD.

Honestly, I have no idea how to even make a decision on this, so I figured to ask the gurus.

What opti should I buy? I will pay $500 bucks if I knew it would be reliable.

its enough to drive a man to drink...

The MSD is great for the early style replacement. It has a rubber o-ring, and a venting system.

But you have the old dynaspark. Apparently the new (third) owners are running it into the ground and putting out non-quality pieces.

I have no personal experience with buying optis (L98) but I'd go ac delco or MSD - those seem to be the two best choices for a basic replacement.

Andy, here's what my MSD looked like inside after 10k miles.

http://www.corvette-guru.com/modules/ ... id=118974#forumpost118974

Plus the MDS is vented and the GM replacements are not (important on a 92-93).

I was fortunate that when the opti began misfiring on my '94 back in 2004, the Dynaspark was still being built by DynoTech Engineering, and that's what I installed. The car's been running flawlessly ever since. Sadly, I've been seeing almost nothing but bad reports from Dynaspark users since Phil sold the product line off some years ago.

If I were needing a replacement spline-drive opti, I think I'd probably go with the MSD unit, despite the mixed reviews I've read about them.

If I were needing a replacement pin-drive opti, it'd be a toss-up between the MSD and OEM, and I'd probably tilt toward the OEM unit because the quality difference is smaller, and the price difference is larger. But I'd caulk the unit up with RTV before I installed it...

Live well,

SJW

I have no alegence to them, just saying I have one.

The current owner, his name is Bob I think, seems on the ball.

I bought one in 2009. Several months ago, it flat out died. Code 16. Come to find out that someone screwed up the assembly and bent the tone disc, causing it to rub up against the optical pickup, lunching same.

He fixed it promptly without charge.

So far, the new unit is working fine.

Let's see...the first one I put on was an OEM. After about 3000 miles I started having issues. "Couldn't be the Opti it's new." After a big run around I find the cap on the new OEM opti is carbon tracking all over the place. That's when I decided to go with MSD. I very high quality unit....well worth the money in my opinion.

Thanks guys - you've swung me over to the MSD. I've read some advice where people recommend dismantling a new opti to make sure the rotor screws have loctite - should I do this with the MSD?

That problem was mostly with guys that raced, a lot of high RPM.
But do it anyway since you will have the cap off to install it. Takes like 5 minutes.

And put the bottom vent hose on before you install it, it's way easier to put the hose clamp on that way.

The upper vent hose (with the check valve) can be teed into the vacuum line on the pass side that comes out of the intake (just to the rear of the stock opti connector.

Absolutely locktite the rotor screw, and make sure the O-Ring/cap seal is properly installed when you put the cap back on.

The reason I went DynaSpark was that they are the only ones with a capless option.

The early ones came with a round 0-ring that was a pain. The latest have a square o-ring that stays in place, it's a big improvement.

Check out the summit white box opti. The engine I put in Jan needed a newer style opti and I needed it NOW.
Its worked well so far, several events and its now on the replacement engine.

I'd check it just to play it safe

some have found let over metal from the machining
I didn't

Just watch the gasket when you put it back together.

I hardwired my harness in (figure 11). The connection on my car was shot due to the heat and age.

Yea, that's another point. The MSD 92-93 connector doesn't fit the Corvette connector, fits the other GM harnesses though (unless they made a change lately).

It's not a big deal though, just 4 wires to do.

I found the wire config.
Cut and pasted from Tyler's (tjpreul) older post:

I ended up hard wiring mine in. Here is an answer from BillH when I installed mine.

"I need to add on the 92, unless MSD made a change recently, the opti connector will fit a Caprice harness but not the corvette.

This isn't a big deal, just 4 wires to solder and heat shrink.

Here's the wire connections:
92 LT1 MSD

black/red(stripe) to brown/yellow - low resolution

purple/white to brown/orange - hi res

yellow to red - 12 volt

black/pink to red/green - ground

The 5th wire in the LT1 harness is a ground/shielding wire. It's not needed on the MSD Opti. It doesn't connect to anything on the GM Opti either, just wraped around the other 4 wires for shielding."

Note: On the shielding, I left mine off too with no problems in 4 years.
One person has posted that they had a problem until they has that shield connected to ground.
But I'd try it without first.
