I this one of those that the motor mounts were breaking and they installed chains to keep the motor in the engine bay.

The 402, IIRC, was a smog motor. designed to put out tons of torque, and not much stink. How do they respond to performance parts? Can you fit 396 based aluminum heads on it? 454 heads?

Andy, the only diff. between a 396 and 402 is the bore size. 396 is 4.094 and the 402 = 4.126.... Stroke on both is 3.766, In a nut shell the 402 is nothing more than a 396 bored out >030 over from the factory..These to engines use a different piston and require a Closed chamber head as opposed to a 454, which use an OPEN chamber head.. The 396/402 are very torky and produce excellent horsepower aswell, along with accepting bout any modifications you can think of as far as aftermarket parts

SOME OF THE HEADS ARE INTERCHANGABLE BUT YOU HAVE TO WATCH FOR PISTON TO HEAD INTERFERENCE. IMHO if an engine is designed for closed chamber heads Stick to that and vice versa !

I think you might be thinking bout the TALL BLOCK 396, This had a .400 taller deck height and is a totally different animal designed for only tork.

Wasn't there something about the 402's having heating problems because they were bored out and the two inner cylinders would have problems.....? Probably just street rumors back then....but I remember something about the 402's that some guys didn't like.....

Wait....was there a small block 402 and a big block 402? I don't know.....

IMHO, you are refering to the 400cid engine.. these engines had a 4.125bore and 3.750 stroke, with a short 5.565 rod length and the piston dwelled in the cylinder too long, thus creating cooling issues. BTW the above numbers are jus from memory..Also known for excessive oil consumption. I would never suggest going more than .040 over bore on a 400 block. jus my 2 cents. Below, engine I built for American Hot Rod .

oh, bummer.

Are you staying big block? If the car can take it, I would.

But then again, a nice quick LSx drop would be pretty cool.
