Let's face it, usually Memorial day is only about two thing...looking at boobies, drinking, and getting sunburned...or placing flowers on grave stones. I've done plenty of both.

However, in my case it involved a LOT of home improvement projects. The big one was a new front step to replace the ghetto brick lump that used to reside under the door. It was cracked and uneven and looked horrible in front of an otherwise attractive home entry.

Sunday afternoon I bought and unloaded the stone and mortar. Surprisingly not sore after unloading 50 stones at 55 lbs each and 10 bags of premix at 65 lbs each.

A friend came over Monday morning after I busted up the old step and we got started. Finished around 4pm and I'm super happy. I think it looks great.

So what're your thoughts? Did I do an okay job?

Thanks.

The house was built in 1971, and the door was built for the house. My Grandparents built the house, and though I spent most of my life growing up there with my Grandparents, it officially because mine when my Grandmother passed two years ago tomorrow.

Sarah and I have done a lot of work to it, and this step was high on my list.

The old step is hard to make out in these images but you can see that it was just a single high step made from the same brick as the house. Once I got it busted apart I decided they used broken brick from the house as an afterthought and it was never planned or rethought after it was done.

Honestly, one of the most under done parts of the house.

Wow, that step was really halfass, huh. Sitting on a 4x4?
If that's the only thing done like that on the house, you're good.

I think your step guys built my entire house.

Huge improvement.

I always wanted a house with doors like that.....and matching garage doors.

The 4x4 was something my Step Dad rigged up before Grandmother died to help lift the step back up and level it. It had gotten hard to stand on and that was his solution. As you can see, my solution was a bit more involved. LOL.

The flat roof was kind of a crap deal for us but really I like everything else about the house. I've pitched half the roof last November and we'll do the other half soon.

We've only been in the house by ourselves for two years and really I think we've come a long way. Most rooms have been remodeled or at least modernized. We still have a lot to do but as long as we keep this pace we'll be done with the house in a few years.

Nice workmanship on that step! Looks AWESOME!

The door is ubercool, too. However, I would have to say there are some interesting clashes of style... something the late 60s/early 70s could not quite make sense of...

My Grandparents traveled to South America for three months every winter for every year of the 50 years they were married. They loved the Spanish style so when they built this house they basically modeled it after a '70's Spanish home. Those countries are usually somewhat behind ours in the ways of style and trend so it makes sense you're getting a mixture of '60's and '70's.

Maybe when we get a few more large projects done I'll post a lot more pics of the house in kind of a walk through theme thread.

A few of our members have been here to the house. Chris, Andrew, Tyler, Curtis, Doug...I'm anxious for all you guys to let me know what you think of the new step compared to the old one. LOL.

Style and trends are determined by people who want your money.

The new steps are perfect.

Style and trend wise that is....send me $5.00

Actually they are, the round style looks way better than a straight slab style, gives it some character.

Nice design and workmanship. It was hot here. Hope you had a nice breeze, as the job must have created lots of dust with all those angle cuts. Did you rent some kind of masonry chop saw? How about mixing, by hand?

Occasional breeze but for the most part it was hot humid stagnant air. I totally dehydrated myself even trying to drink lots of water. I tend to overheat anyway and the heat really just made it all worse.

Yeah, lots of dust and stuff but I sweep up and clean up every so often to keep my work sites clean and easy to work in. I put away tools I am not using and I keep trash and stuff organized and materials consolidated but easy to get to.

The saw we used is owned by the friend that came to help. He has lots of handy equipment and the saw we were using was cutting through the stone like butter so I know it's a good one. We made the cuts up in the driveway away from the work site.

I hand mixed all the mortar in a wheel barrel and did it one 65lb bag at a time so I could return unused materials when we were done. All in all I had 12 extra blocks used all 10 bags of mortar with very little waste at the end.

Since the labor was all free / voluntary, the only costs were materials and after the returns, I was in it for a total of about $170 in block and mortar.
