It made me wonder if we have to state that it was on a closed track, like on that other site?

But seriously, I never speed on public roads.

That would be wrong.

You can talk about street racing, as long as you do it with your catalytic converters installed and functioning withing specifications.

I don't like street racing... but shit happens.

My feelings are simple - discuss it, don't bury our heads in the collective sands about it, but don't go soliciting or organizing street races.

Basically, we don't want to ignore the reality of street racing, and to not discuss it at all only hides the problem.

just be ready to hear a lot of people bitch about taking it to the track.

If someone feels the need to brag about something really really dumb in public, I'm all for it!

I race every now and then in my old Chevy pickup on the freeway. Much more fun than the vette, because the little kids in imports actually have a chance against it, and it's more fun rubbing it in. Everyone is always trying to get in front of me assuming there's an old man behind the wheel. I think my next mod will be white-walls.

So there is no way legal action could be taken against the Guru forum for allowing that type of conversation? As of this moment, I believe we're all intelligent folks, but growth brings all types of challenges.

I just don't want to see this site taken out for something silly.

Legal action can be taken against anyone at anytime for any reason, whethere there's a wrongdoing or not, that's what lawyers do.

But as long as the forum isn't condoning people arranging street racing events on here, I don't see an issue. It isn't Bogus' job to tell you to eat your vitamins, obey traffic laws, and listen to your mother.

So I could 'talk' about going three vettes wide and 135-140mph on I-75 and not get in trouble? Of course that would be just in case the guy in the middle was a LEO and we just had to strectch our legs a bit.

Will this be standard whitewalls or the good ol' 70's wide whitewalls the pimps had? How about some curb feelers too? Now that would be a cool mod.

CC, lets not paint everybody with such a wide brush

Sure there are the ambulance chasers and such, but there are just as many that will tell you straight up, you don't have a chance in hell of winning! Penalties imposed by many states and bar associations against attorneys for filing frivolous lawsuits have also done quite a bit to limit them

It's my understanding based upon some conversations with legal types, that as long as you don't promote the races, aid in organizing them nor do you EDIT the post (which essentially makes you complicit and a co-conspirator), you are pretty well covered as a web site.

Brand X simply chooses to go overboard, taking a holier than though approach to the problem, and burying thier respective heads in the sand about it.

Having stated my reasons for being against street racing in a previous thread on the matter, I'll not do so again here. But racing is potentially dangerous enough under the best of circumstances. And if you've never lost a close friend through this illegal activity, then doing so will make you see it in an entirely different light. If it doesn't, then you're just a complete idiot.

It's one thing to say: It's a bad idea, don't do it.
It's another thing to make it illegal to talk about.

absolutely.

The discussion about illegal acts is not in it's own right illegal, it's the discussion about DOING THEM.

There are other fine lines, basically, there is no such thing as "free speach." Simply because any discussion about very distasteful things is just not good.

I mean, if there is a news report about child porn, that's a thing to discuss, but to discuss the merits of child porn, no thanks. locked.

To discuss the merits of street racing is silly, there are none, but at least the subject isn't as repuslive as child porn... follow?

I know it's a double standard, that's true... but it's one I can live with.

Actually this is not that far from the truth.
A few years ago a buddy and I were in
Atlanta for the race, it got rained out Sunday
so we stayed over to see it Monday. When
the race was over EVERYBODY was in a hurry
to get home. Myself in the Vette and cars,
trucks, motorhomes, and whatever else rolled
were northbound on I-75 at 95mph! Ran that
way all the way to Chattanooga.

Dude, I was at that race!! Came up I-75 at 85mph pulling a 28' camper. If I went slower than 85 then the motorhomes and the Nascar car haulers and such nearly blew me off the road. I was going 85 in the slow lane and didn't really pass anyone, everyone was passing me! I tried 90mph but it didn't feel comfortable pulling a camper that fast. At 85 it was like 65. At 75 I was getting pushed all over the place from getting passed. Really bad. It was funny when I realized my old truck couldn't even get up to 90 on the level and here I was running 90 uphill downhill and on the level pulling a camper.

Well, the Georgia State Police could force the site to hand over your IP address and you might get a ticket in the mail.

As a website and as members, you really have nothing to worry about.

I'm a member is several websites that are about nothing but street racing.

Unless you get caught, and they are digging for evidence to use in a conviction. No one will really look.

Most of the street racing the people I know do is videotaped and is all over the net. These people have been doing it for years.

And no matter what stance people try to take, we've all done it, be it in our DD or our vette. A set up race, or sitting at a redlight wanting to embarrass that honda, or seeing what that Cobra really has under the hood.

Everything is as safe or dangerous as you make it, be it racing, or a commute to work through city traffic.

Ignoring it is worse than condoning it in my opinion, as it makes people look like a bunch of hypocrites.
