Going nutso on a members 113s, would like some #s to compare it to. See what can be had out of a production head with stock valve sizes.

TPIS I think had some large claims but they used bigger valves Im sure.

Anyone know?

Here is before and after flow data. these were ported. Ignore the valve size in the pictures.

I'm pretty sure he put 2" valves in them after porting, which were the biggest that would fit.

Thanks, looks like 240 on the intake and 182 or 192 on the exhaust? (My eyes are terrible)

Man what Id give for a small sonic tester, that would be fun.

Good timing, in the "end all AFR thread" someone doubted a set of stock ported 113s vs AFR 180. Heads are going up there tonight Stay tuned...

Edit: Eek...lol

Spent two hours up there, interesting. I was a little disappointed but being as I havent done a valve job, they have small valves and this was my initial cut....in comparison with the ported big valve head #s numbers it isnt too terribly bad.
To think these are in the ballpark of the aftermarket head is nuts. Even if a TPI couldnt use all the peak #s of one the lower lift numbers that a TPI loves would still kill a good set of ported factory heads. Just my .02, Im no pro.

Little more work and they will be satisfactory to me for what this guy is doing. (Ported TPI base, 214/228 HR 520/530 lift.). Look at all numbers, not just peak.
Anesthese, if these arent TPIS correct me, I ASSumed lol.

Ron, the numbers don't look bad. It looks like you picked-up 20+ CFM. With the ported intake, that should be good for at least 1.5 - 2 mph in the 1/4.

That looks pretty good. I have been planning to do that project with mine. Any tips or pictures? The book from Vizard "How to build and mod SBC heads" has a section on the 113 head.

Their quick port with 2.00" 1.55" valves:

Intake

.200 - 129.7
.250 - 156.2
.300 - 172.8
.350 - 190.7
.400 - 201.6
.450 - 217.3
.500 - 224.4
.550 - 222.3 (stall)

Exhaust

.200 - 108.1
.250 - 122.6
.300 - 138.0
.350 - 152.6
.400 - 162.0
.450 - 169.9
.500 - 175.5
.550 - 176.5

He states that more flow can be had but it will take a lot more time. He also states that 250 cfm intake flow could be had by more work on the runner.

To each their own with that question. To me it boils down to cost. I'd like to pay $2000 for new awesome heads but won't be affording that. I can however spend very little to port my stock parts which are already paid for and get a mild HP increase. More HP would be better but you must decide your budget.

I like to track my car and spend more money on that and having fun. Mine is 99% a track car. So I'd rather have the $1500 in head savings and enjoy tracking it. I feel kind of sad for built up cars that never see the track and wonder a bit at the point of it all.

What one has to consider is the cost of:

-Cleaned
-Maguafluxed
-Valve job
-Surafaed to make sure they are straight
-Seals, springs....Do they need guides, etc?
-Using bigger valves? installing seats?

Or would one cut corners do a little grinding a quick V.J., $40 set of springs and hold their breath? Might beOk, might not.

It can add up in a hurry.
Think thats the point of the aftermarket mfrs pieces-
no matter what you do they are leagues apart, its not really fair to compare the two. Make the best of what you have or burn the plastic up on new.

There will be more getting done on these fwiw.
Always fun to see what can be done with stockers.

basicly the amount of material removed. Stage 3 is completely hogged, and the valve faces and combustion chambers coated with their 2000* coating

My actual numbers from TPIS. 113 CNC porting w/ 2" I / 1.56"E valves and 60cc chambers.

Flow #'s

.100 .200 .300 .400 .500 .600
In. 55 122 193 242 270 262
Ex. 40 112 154 181 197 205

Their advertised numbers are less w/ stock 58cc but who really knows...That's why I jumped in on the "end all be all thread". It's all bs until the car runs down the track or gets strapped to the roller.

TPIS link:

Good info there, thanks for piping in.

In an internet world full of 300cfm posts a real world figure on older heads can be humbling...It takes a lot time to even get this far with them.

Sounds like a max effort deal there (TPIS), can only imagine what that would run someone.

I caught your drift with the post on CF..we are sticking with small valves and a budget on this one. Without access to a bench, cutaways and a sonic tester you can only go so far, check your work after an initial cut and go from there.

I have no desire to strike water which to go really nuts you almost have to do then weld up, go backwards from there to find lmiits. They should be over 230ish when done which should be sufficent in this case.
They are at 82% I/E at present
It's all bs until the car runs down the track or gets strapped to the roller.
Aint that the truth...Fun watching everyone go nuts in the thread, though lol.

Lurk in theC3 an C3 section sometime, those guys get real pizzed when you tell them the truth about their old iron camel humps in comparison. Man, do they get uptight!

$1250 for headwork? For just increasing air flow? Does it really increase airflow THAT much? You HAVE TO get a cam too dontcha'???

Seems like a wire wheel would open up the ports a little for less than $1250, along with some valve grinding compound...

If you ain't stagin' lights, or oval trackin', $1250 seems a little excessive.

Yes, a cam upgrade is a must among othr things

Thats actually not too bad..A buttload of time and R&D goes into developing those CNC programs; they have to as the time it would take to hand port it...its not worth it.

Their old afr CNC ported 190s kick butt too..For a price.
Jsup was quoted $1500 for porting if he wanted to have his new heads done if Im not mistaken; I have about 2k in porting on the heads on my 67 (Mamo did them years ago)...Bet Wes paid some good coin too for his iron heads by Stark who is one of the best iron porters in the biz..

They are all good names (among many) in the business who pretty much name their price and dont need the work.

The real pros get the huge dough but the average TPI car can get by with much less $ as less work is needed. Thank goodness lol.

Yeah, I guess roadracing, going 140mph+, actually braking, turning and shifting doesn't really count......

Ah come on Ron, I was just agreeing with you about the camel humps; time and money are all that stand between my car and a LSx swap.

With that said, I'm not convinced the Dart heads will out perform my 46 y.o. Chevy 300HP castings... and some dyno runs with an A - B head swap seems like a lot of work just to find out.

I think you missed the point...

$1250 for heads seems excessive for daily drivin'.

Sorry if my opinion offended you.

No problem Blade. I must have read it wrong. I haven't seen too many tpi 350's making the power that I am so I'm pretty happy w/ it for the price. I'll be on the dyno again this week after my race so we'll see if I picked anything up with an AFPR that actually works and without mufflers.

Ron, the work looks good. I like the shots of the intake. When will you be getting them flowed?

Soon as they are done and get a good valve job, thats always good for a few cfm. Hopefully soon so I can move but guessing within a few weeks min....Stupid amounts of time to get this far, they need a buttload of help.
There are shortcuts to save time but they will look like hell in the pics (doesnt matter but it does I guess), was hesitant to put these up.
Promised the person 230/180, last pass was 225(cough)/181
Shooting for closer to 240/190 or so using a small valve.

Thanks much for the pictures. I'll be getting to mine eventually. The intake base porting pix brings back some bad memories. LOL

Heres a nightmare. Much more agressively one I did years ago when I had the 89. Was going to put this on a mild 406 I wanted to build. Had to be smog legal and look stock... Making gaskets that would have sealed would have been challenging

So I'm assuming that one didn't work out....Any steps on what to do to *not* take off too much? Besides using less abrasive stuff to start with? Like we discussed before, I just plan on doing simple gasket matching, so I'm assuming there isn't too much danger in that?

It just takes many hours and can be tedious getting the right angle and length of bit. I took a few pictures while I was working. There is a lot of remove!!!

Matt, that one worked out fine and planned to use it, just would have had to make my own gaskets for it.. I fell into the Z and sold off the car, he wanted the intake too but never used it. I can locate him and see if its still floating around.

If you want shoot me a pm and Ill give you a few pointers.

The person Im doing these for will have the car dynoed. It will be mild, ZZ9 TPIS cam, 1.6 rockrs headers and hopefully tru duals
Only bummer is for the time being the stock runners willbe used until his budget permits then well find some SLPs and go to town on those. It wont be a high hp drag car but will be fun light to light.

Thanks Ron.

As far as the SLPs go, I looked for a long time for used ones before I bought them brand new. In my searches, the average set of used SLPs goes for $225, without gaskets and sometimes without bolts. I bought a brand new set on Ebay from Thews6store for $295 shipped. Food for thought....
