Got a call back from the old job (county), want me to start back the 24th, have a week to give an answer. When I left I planned on never hearing from them again. If I start I dont even see a paycheck til early Dec. Conditions arent the greatest but it is a job if I can make it through their 7 week academy

Meantime started application process for the same type job next county over a few months back. Passed the written, have an oral interview the 15th..If thats passable they investigate background, do the psych, polygraph, etc.Could take a few months assuming all goes well. Better area, admin, pay, etc. First choice.

If I started the 1st one theres no taking a day off for interviewing for the 2nd, I would be fired. If I dont make it through the training on the first job I screw the pooch with both

Not sure what to do. Know where my heart is but I do need a yob, credit dont last forever. Ugh.

Take the one with better chances, pass the academy (now that you know what it takes).

Try to reschedule the interview on the 2nd job, but don't hold your breath.

First requirement is having a job. Until you have that, I don't think you're in a position to take a risk on anything else.

The county job may not thrill you, but it will pay the bills and give some stability.

What the hell kinda job doesn't pay anything for a month?

Why did you leave in the first place? If they fired you before, they'll do it again. If you hated it so bad that you left, what is different now?

Would the job in the other county not pay you until December as well?

What is the difference in pay and commute? Gas ain't free.

2nd job pays $4-5 more per hour, better conditions, staff, location, etc .

L.a. co.-after 6 weeks they pay for 2, then you go to bi-weekly pay.

2nd choice. 2 weeks training and youre in

If I take the first there is no resheduling to try and get the 2nd, cant leave the job, be late or even leave the premises on lunch. Pretty strict.

Wondering if at some point during the interview I should drop a note about being willing to pass up the 1st for a chance to get in there. Its a good place to work and I could get out of this overpriced Valley, be a little closer to the coast also. Good advancement opps there. Pretty confident Ill get in but of course there are no guarantees. Heck, just passed an FBI clearance, should pass this no problem.

Damn.

Based on your experience with the first job, I'd vote for #2.

How long would you have to wait for the next opportunity at either?

If #1 comes around every 2 months, and #2 comes around every year, then I'd be inclined to give #2 a shot if you think your chances are good, and then if it fails, you can give #1 another shot in a few months.

But based on what you said about them inviting you back to #1, it sounds like your odds are better there. You don't really have an idea on #2, and if it's that much easier to qualify for, it's that much easier for many others too, which doesn't exactly help your chances.

Heres the truth..I was warned in both former "classes" there by numerous staff Im the "wrong kind" and no matter how well I do they will find a reason to get rid of me at some point the first 6 mos if not sooner (at will employment for 6 mos, then permanaent).
Last program first day the program director walks in front of my desk in front of everyone and announces, "If youre not bXXXX or Lxxxx you wont last at this job" pretty smugly.
I know of a few that work in there and 2 that retired and its pretty much true. Shouldnt keep me from trying but Im not going to work with a ghetto mentality staff. Sometimes they are worse than the ones locked up. Plus the ex works in that depratment who Im getting ready to file papers on.

Things are a little different in choice 2
Was hoping to work with a little better class of people.
Am I being picky?

Sure sounds like #2 is the happier choice. Seems like you deserve better than you've been getting for a little while. Also seems like a 6mo. sentence at the old position.

Work atmosphere makes a huge difference in job quality. Even if I had to choose between job a that paid more with a crappy environment or job b with less money but a better environment I'd choose b every time. I think this is a no brainer. You said job b pays more and is a better place to work. So tough it out a couple more months.

He has a foot in the door with A, while B won't work with him in leting him reschedule the interview.

A = Invited back, has a chance

B = Would be nice, but who knows

Flip a coin. If you don't have any coins left, then push your Z off a cliff and see if it lands on heads or tails.

Seeing how it took my mother nearly 3 years to get to the front of the line and get a job for the state at the correctional facilty, I get the feeling getting these positions take some perseverance. You're applying for a job in a bureaucracy, and the only thing they're slower at than hiring, is firing people.

Gamble either way
Choice B-They are shorthanded and are hiring which is encouraging..Standards seem higher but if Im going to spend 20 yrs somewhere sounds much better conditions/pay/location.

Interview at Choice B is 10 days before start date at plan A. If I was in a better $$ position I wouldnt care about waiting and taking chances. Im about as credit extended as you can get unfortunately.

Gotta make a decision.

Hedge your bets.

Say yes to the 1st, still go on the interview for the 2nd.

Just spoke with the head program director (choice B)and it more or less turned into a 15 min phone interview. Said she would contact the others who will interview me and attempt to expedite things. Thats a good sign, think it went well.

Sorry bout that Gary, yes thats what it was about.

Im going to go for the choice #2. I have to be insane to pass on a bird in the hand but my gut points me to #2.

Talked to #2 again and theres no scheduling other appts on Sat or returning calls after hours, so its one or the other. Kind of hoping to work 1 for awhile and if #2 came thoruhg I could jump over but thats not possible.

I am triple effed if this doesnt work out but cant say Ive had great luck with #1.

Well...walked in their with copies of all certs, ref's, etc in advance in hopes it would score points. To a point think it did.

Panel of 3, the main one did her best to tear me apart.
Think overall things went well, had the right answers and sold myself..
Little sketchy about background, hit some bumps in the road when I was younger I hope this isnt held against me. They check your hind hairs. Choice 1 never checked anything they bring ya in and sort you out later.
Could take a long time and no guarantees.Should know in a few days...If backround calls for an interview I made it past today. Sweatin' bullets here, choice 1 is a closed door as of now.

I would pursue the 1st one as a backup plan as long as it doesn't interfere with the 2nd, and of course not commit to them.

Plus it might be rewarding to tell them to piss off at the last minute like they did to you before.

I tried to post up last night, but my mobile connection was screwy...

Dang, Ron... I dunno what to say. I know life has handed you the shitty end for what seems like quite awhile now. I guess when life gives you crap, you have to make brownies... Just don't eat them yourself, eh?

I was hoping this was the thing that was gonna turn it around. But just because it isn't doesn't mean there isn't something out there even better.

Chin up, brother! There's gotta be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks, had high hopes for this one, felt right.Frankly Im shocked.
Scored high on written felt I nailed the interview...

Think its time I started packing and close things up, I have really overextended myself in the waiting game. What awaits, who knows it wont be pretty thats for sure.

No guarantees in life.

Time to get a job as a bouncer across the street.

Maybe you can get some "perks" in.

Seriously, I knew someone who took a couple years off college because he was making so much in tips as a doorman.

Actually I would venture to say he took a few years off because he has bad decision making skills.

Just spoke to them...Feedback was

-I was audited last year therefor I have "financial issues"
Nevemind after being unemployed for the better part of a year I (for now) have an 800 credit score

-In 1989 I had a DUI and partied a little so that gives me "criminal history". My last traffic ticket was 1992 for a stop sign. 20 yrs ago for crying out loud.

-I failed the ethical question of would I tattle on another employee if I they called in sick and I saw them at a restaurant. Was taught through training at another facility you never rat someone out.

Fk me for trying, what a load of crap.

Boy, the person they hire is going to be a squeaky clean individual...

Or a relative of the boss...
