I bought these stripes for my car over a year ago before I had completed the engine work. The wheels, tires and stripes were to give it a new look to go along with the engine mods.
Anyhow, its been a long time coming, but I finally installed the stripes this weekend. I still have a little trimming here and there and a couple tiny bubbles here and there to massage out with the hair dryer, but all in all I'm very happy with the outcome.

Some folks just hate stripes, but I think it gives the car a different look and makes it stand out against all the others in my club.

Resized Image

If you are interested, I bought the stripes from VetteStripes.com. Mike Ung is the proprietor there and he is pretty good to work with. I had him send me a color chip book and I picked out a metallic red garnet which is just awesome in the sun. A little darker than torch red. The photos don't pick it up, but the subtle metallic in the vinyl is really nice. The job is a little tedious to do, but if you can wrap a Christmas gift you should be able to do this. I learned a few tricks by the second large panel on the hood and the rest went pretty smooth.

Here is link to a bunch of photos I took tonight

I think they look great!

A tip if you have any bubbles is you can use the sharp tip of an exacto knife to help bleed the air out. Also, how did you smooth it? Did they send you a 3m vinyl application tool? Wrap it in heavy duty shop rags or an old t shirt and use a lot of lightly soaped water over the vinyl to help smooth it all out.

Matthew

PS - your link didn't work for me so I took the liberty of showing it again:

I used an 8" squeegee I bought at West Marine. Nice rubber edge. Also I used a mix of Johnson's baby shampoo (12 drops) per quart of water in a spray bottle for lube.

I only have a couple small bubbles,so I won't do anything to them for a few days. The sun will normally take these out, or a hair dryer will too. Instead of an Exacto tip I have used a sewing needle in the past to make the tiniest of pin pricks to let the air escape.

This material smooths out VERY nicely. Actually the larger the area the nicer it goes on. The difficult part is not smoothing it out, but being patient enough to wait long enough to allow some of the moisture from the lube to dry so you can roll the edges over and get them to stick well enough. I found that if you wait an hour or so after the initial laying of the sheet, the edges will dry up and allow the tack to come back and it will roll around the edges nicely. Once again, I tried a hair dryer and that worked too.

Thanks guys, I flip flopped back and forth for a long time now debating if I should put them on or not. I got a big show coming up at the end of the month and since I show it on the NCCC Modified class anyway, I figured why not.

I guess they can be removed if I ever really hate them, but I think they look pretty sharp.

Not sure why, but I can't see any pix from my phone. Guess I'll have to fire up the laptop one of these days. I' excited to see it. I know the wheels were porn worthy.

I was disappointed, I couldn't find the pics till I got to the end of the thread, but well worth it when I found them.

Agree with everyone else, great lock and great job on the fitting. Makes me wonder what colour would look good over a red C4.

Being as I’m not particularly Corvette knowledgeable, were those two side stripes once part of a racing team or particular model specific are they always one sided as well. I’ve seen them before in pic’s, but never known why.

I also like the tints on the front light units, are these stick-on, legal and do they affect light output much?

Fluff, I think white stripes would look great on your car. Black would be cool too.

The small hood stripes are called "hash marks" and came from the factory on the '96 Grand Sport edition.

Fluff,

More info... I looked up racing stripes on wikepedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go-faster_stripes

Interesting as they were originally called Cunningham Racing Stripes or LeMans Stripes. Used first in 1951 to tell the team cars apart easily.

BTW - I think white stripes would be the ticket. In my opinion, black would not offer enough contrast, however I have seen them both ways.

Thanks for the info on the stripes/hash CSS996 and biggrizzly.

What would you think of the same colour or a burgandy on a torch red!? I kind of wonder if that would look nice a subtle, perhaps even with a dark gold pinstripe around the edge <thinks>. The again, why am I thinking 'subtle' on a Corvette!

Would it be impolite to ask the cost biggrizzly (tell me to push off if it is).

Any more info about those darker front lights... those I do like if I could get away with it with the Spainish police.

Fluff, I bought them from Mid-America years ago. Here is the link to thier online catalog. I don't have the rear blackouts just the front. My clear lenses up front are pretty messed up over the years and the blackouts hide the road rash they have.

Honestly, dark red or burgundy on a red car sounds bloody awful, but I'm not known for my taste!

I think white is your best bet, but silver might be nice if you want to tone it down a bit.

Your probably right CSS996 (about the combo, not your good taste). I was looking for subtle, but I guess that's a contradiction.

Might have to dig the Photoshop out and see if I can experiment with colors.
