don't waste your time with a mechanics stethoscope, use a long screwdriver, autozone has a descent fuel pressure gauge. got a vacuum gauge off ebay, works good. Mighty vac from autozone is handy. Get the good timing light with tach, real handy. Spark plug wire pullers for the hard to reach plugs.

Sorry slow getting back on this. I replaced the ECM, and retarded the timing to just below 5*. Reset the IAC, replaced the TPS, and it runs alot better. But get this !! I ran out of scans... I didn't get a single scan with the replacement ECM.

I think Woodstock can vouch for me, he has helped me with my Datamaster scans, the miss is something minor I haven't figured out. I will conquer this evenually. I love listening to the engine, I just wish it was a little smoother. Hell I play with it every weekend, it's my passion, I won't let it break down.

Just pour it into the brake booster vacuum hose and it sucks it straight into the plenum, might kill multec injectors though. Did mine. Ran great for a week and then it

I have given up on locating the slight miss problem that has plagued my car for the last year. Replaced, you name it, ran 20 Datamaster scans, increased fuel pressure, and it still has that little shimmy. Now I turn up the bass and volume on the radio and its not so annoying anymore

I presently have the 16197128 ECM, I just acquired an 01227727. Will the 727 work in my car ? For diagnostic reasons I want to try the 727 and watch certain parameters on a Datamaster scan. Certain numbers on the scan maybe ECM related. Thats what I'm after. Any advice on getting the plugs off ( looking at it seems I have to break tabs for removal ) ? Is it bascially plug and play ? Thanks in advance.

Ok tonight I replaced the TPS and set it at .62 volts. Now all numbers are closer to "what I think is normal". Did set the timing at approx. 5.9* I will post my final scan here shortly.

Did move the TPS to .69 volts couldn't get it any lower. Seems OK. Funny I'm learning how to review a report before printing it. I didn't realize it prints where the timeline sets at. Did replace the MAP sensor, could never get a reading much over 50 . The test showed OK volts at required kpa, but the cars rpm would never make it rise to where it should be. The replacement reads as much as 92 kpa on acceleration. Good there !! At least I'm not showing a lean condition. Did back the timing to about 7*. I do notice a slight ping on (like bad gas) acceleration. I may go to 6* and see what happens. I does idle better, but the slight miss isn't as noticeable. Almost there,,,, Thanks for all your help, Woodstock.

Thanks Woodstock for your help. The TPS was set as the car was idling. The idle was hunting up and down when I turned the TPS up slightly to get the idle to steady. That was at .92 volts. I'm thinking of replacing it. Tomorrow I will try it at 4* to 6* and see what happens. I thought of testing the map, I will try that as well. My work mechanic suggested unpluging the knock sensor and watch the effect on the scan. Possibly a bad sensor ? This car sat for 10 years and when it was reconditioned I doubt they replaced the knock sensor. The TPS at "key on only" showed 100% at WOT with 5 volts. I will show the latest scan here shortly.

another scan tonight. While idling I adjusted the TPS to about .92 volts at idle. The knock count reports about 5-6, which is far better than previous report. Also set the timing at about 9* and got a little knock at idle setting at a stop sign. So I retarded it to 8*. Haven't test drove it, its getting late.

Just ran antoher scan. I keep the RPM up, the report shows 4025 RPM. The TPS now at 17.3 %, got it up to 21 %. Volts were only at 1.41 max. The knock count is at 160

Thanks, guys. I'm taking the numbers and referring to the FSM. I have figured that it is running lean. The 02 sensor had hardly any carbon build up, it wouldn't hardly come off on your hand. It is set at 6* BTDC, but it just got set to that from 8* here recently. I've had posts on major knock issues in the past (funny didn't even know what was going on) I don't have a custom tune, no fancy chip, just tried to set everything to spec. All I'm looking for is the slight miss that plagues this car at idle. If its running lean, what's a way to richen it up ?

Well, got a replacement cluster from a local guy. It was a little time consuming on the tear down and replacement but after all the effort it works great. No more variable brightness problems and fading speedo numbers. I think the hardest part was bolting the steering wheel back up. Luckily a neighbor stopped by and he held it up while I reached under with the bolts. :thumbright: :thumbleft: :thumbright: :thumbleft:

The Right Stuff is good stuff. It should hold. The VC gaskets are a pain if you are trying to replace the VC with all the gadgets around it attached, you work, wiggle and mash and just when you think you got it the damn gasket slips off. I hope it all goes well.

Just checked out RockAuto.com and the lift struts were around 30 bucks, I'd make sure that 8 bucks is what your referring to.

What sucked was the first trip to Autozone got me two lefts. Well they didn't have the right. Kept the left and two months later I ordered the right. I kid you not, the one that came in was a left and it looked like the one I returned two months prior. I took it home and figured out how to loosen the clamp head and turn the electrical connector around. So now I'm set to go. It was an ordeal, so make sure you are getting one of each.

Well I took the slave apart, got some info from Bill at ZFDoc about the tear down. The piston was stuck and took a soaking of brake fluid and air pressure to get it out. The seal was on backwards, turned it around, and cleaned the interior light surface rust with 1000 grit sand paper. Reassembled and planning on putting the old retaining clip on top of the new clip for added strength. It should be good to go.

There are wide metal retaining tabs holding the ball, just pry a small screwdriver under and slightly twist, pulling the strut at that point and it will come free. Either prop the hatch with a board our have a fried hold it up or will you'll be taking an aspirin afterwards.

I don't wack it anymore because the permanent dent in that shin finally clears that corner. Kind of a custom molded shin now.

Help, my car seems to idle good cold, as it warms up the idle starts to get rougher. Not necessarily a miss, but a stumble as I accelerate and hold at 1700RPM. I keep throwing parts at it. Just replaced the 02 sensor today and doesn't help. Any thoughts ?

I'm considering a hurst shifter. Some have mentioned a pin to be removed from underneath of the shifting mechanism. While underneath it today I noticed a rubber boot covering the area. Is this so called pin underneath this. Any details ?

Thanks guys , its done. I knew the setting was at 6 * BTDC. I have adjusted it many times, but never knew the terminology of retard and advance. I feel like a retard sometimes when I go thru so much with this car and it still acts up.

Is retarding the timing moving it closer to Zero ? Or is it the opposite ?

Oh yeah, I intend on doing that. I know the history of this bad boy. ZF Doc has a good "How to" on this. I'll just put on the shelf until the present one dies. It already has some fluid gathering on the lower side. I'll be ready.

Its a "quick lift" jack. Probably has quick release also.

As mentioned, it's a man's jack. This means it lifts the car in less pumps, but requires a little more grunt per pump. It's due to the piston sizing and done on purpose.

If you want a girly jack that you can use without breaking a nail, you bought the wrong one.

I like that one, looks lower profile than my cheapy harbor freight jack. Does it reach the front cross member? Actually what I need is a high lift jack if I'm gonna be pulling the tranny once per year.

I grunt all day lifting packages (UPS) I don't want to grunt lifting my car It doesn't go under the air foil. So I don't know far it will reach. Will put it on 2X10's and see. Will post a picture.

Well today I took back the 1 1/2 ton Torin jack. Nat'l Tool had to open it, inspect it, I pled my case. I got the refund and bought the 2 1/2 ton Torin. What a difference. This doesn't take much effort at all. Its not as fancy, but I happy with it. The extra money difference went into jack stands. Thanks for the input guys. I'll have to get some 2x10's to drive onto to lift from front now.

Will this USB ALDL cable work for me? http://www.aldlcable.com/sc/details.asp?item=aldlobd1u
What version of Windows would work best ?
Considering TTS Datamaster software. Their website shows the serial port cable. I want to use my mac with bootcamp.

This is the one i have, its 2,000kgs, fully lowered at 94mm and 510mm fully raised. Lifts the car from the front centre cross member as seen in the pic with ease.

Nice jack, Case. My air foil wouldn't let this jack roll far enough under to catch the cross member. May have to drive up on a 2 X 10.

Tomorrow it's going back. I stood there thinking " I shouldn't have to grunt to lift this car". Was less effort with the 12" handle on the little cheapy jack. I hate returning items even if their defective.

It's all part of being a man.

Hey Tommy, did you get my PM last week ?

I'm more of a purist. I'd rather spend the money to get it back to original. The ambition is admired, but he will have to deal with getting flamed more then getting compliments. The headlight thing is what I don't like the most. To each his own.

Even the catalogue they handed me while I stood in line didn't list it. They were just a bunch of kids. Even the little junkie walmart jacks were easier to pump up. I want to lift one side at a time to put in jack stands. Then move to the other side. They have cheaper low profile thats rated 2 1/2 tons mostly steel and heavier, but it will take less effort to lift it.
