I did a little hunting too but was unable to find out. I can confirm that the GM Impala gaskets are indeed .029" when compressed, having measured them after removal. One would think that the gaskets you reference, since they're listed as for the Impala and similar LT1s, would be very close to that too. But who knows? I share your frustration. When I want to know something, I want to know it, dammit!

yes I agree you need both. But in thermal solutions as CC pointed out Temperature delta at the point of heat exchange is crucial. The Colder the radiator is to begin with will dictate how much cooling you get from running fluid through it. If the radiator has no air flow you can calculate how many Watts is it will transfer sitting in an ambient room. The wattage transfer will actually diminish by running more heated fluid though it without changing any other parameter. That calculation moves once air flow is passing across the fins. Here is the company I work for as an engineer. http://www.ferrotec.com/products/thermal/

Good luck. I hope it works! I have no idea how much of a load the bolts will have to take; here's hoping it's not too much.

If you ever remove the harmonic balancer, mark the location on the crank CORRECTLY or it will be a problem. Sadly, the crank is not keyed, this means the pulley can go on anyway it wants to. SORRY BOGUS BUT I HAVE TO DISAGREE
THIS IS INCORRECT THE 3 HOLES ARE OFF SET THE BALANCER WILL ONLY GO ON ONEWAY AT LEAST ON LT1 ENGINES ANYWAY. :thumbright:

Food for thought -- the difference in thread pitch (threads per inch) is the critical item that determines what strength is left in the holes. The holes are definitely weaker by being re-threaded, but the amount the holes are weakened is a function of the difference in thread pitch between the two bolts and less to do with the 0.02 inch difference in diameter. I don't disagree with your assessment. My repair is just that, a repair. If it goes badly, I'll take it off and Helicoil the hole. THe threads were so trashed I didn't have much of a choice. I'll admit, it's a shot. Not too much material came out of the hole, I know what you are saying about thread pitch. Essentially, if there isn't enough meat on the threads, the bolt can pull right out. At the point I was at, there wasn't much I can do without complete dis assembly. So I took a shot. If it has to come back off, it's not that big a deal, it's external... We'll see what happens.

Yeh, I was going to use those, but Lloyd Elliot, the guy that ported my heads, said to use the thinner gasket as it would give me a pinch more compression and since I have such a narrow lobe separation on the cam it would help out.

Think of it this way -- when the holes were originally tapped for 8 mm bolts, a certain amount of metal was removed. Now the holes are re-tapped for 5/16". More metal is removed, now from different parts of the hole wall. Not a good situation. You now put your 5/16" bolt into the hole and torque it. The threads are not supported completely -- if the holes have been weakened enough, the hole wall will fail before you reach the torque specification. That's probably the best thing to happen, as you will now have to bring the unit to a machine shop and have them repair the holes correctly. What is likely to happen is that the hole walls will support the torque spec, but will fail when the engine is under full load. Why? There are gaps where the original 8 mm bolt tap had already removed metal. The RTV, or threadlock or any other additive is not going to increase the ultimate strength of the bolt in the hole. All they do is to resist the bolt from turning. However, when the load is placed on the bolt, it is straight out of the hole, the additives have no affect. This is harder to explain than I thought, and I'd be happy to try again, but the bottom line is that I wouldn't trust your "fix".

I hate to cross post forums but I'm needing help. I have been searching the internet all night and found nothing so far. I dd post this other places on the web, so if you see it you can just ignore (sorry)
I started installing my heads, and started to question the gasket. It is supposed to be .029 thk Impala/Caprice LT1 head gasket. The GM part No. is "GM PART # 12553160". This gasket is a confirmed .029" However, my problem started when I decided to do a cross reference and buy the Fel-Pro brand (Fel-Pro part no. 9966 PT) instead of GM. The gasket appears exactly the same physically, but I can't find and specs on the gasket, and I read on LS1/LT1 Tech that the Fel-Pro Impy Gasket was .049. That would really suck! The other thing I noticed about these gaskets, is that most of the coolant holes in the gasket are very small relative to the large coolant passages in the head and block deck. If you guys have a way to find out the thickness specs on the Fel-Pro 9966 PT Gasket I'd appreciate the help big time. I have one bank already installed and torqued and really don't want to remove that head if I don't have to. Thanks for any help - comments or suggestions

There's two plugs on the a/c high pressure line, about 12" away from the evap coil (the one enclosed in plastic by the firewall).
The big one is your high pressure switch, it opens at high pressure, and if disconnected, will make the fan run. Pull it out and stick a jumper wire in them, see if it shuts the fan off. The smaller one next to it is a high pressure cutout for the a/c. This will shut off the compressor, but doesn't effect the fan. Then there's a 3rd plug, right at the evap, that is used to control the compressor during normal operation. I feel like I've typed all this before.

I'll leave my back window to the pros, plus I want it to be done in 1 piece. I have to repair a few defroster grid lines first though. I might even damage some during tint removal, so I'll check it before doing new tint.

Figure out the miles/year. How long did it take to accumulate those miles, vs what the odo says now? Could be a typo during smog or change of ownership. Although you'll have to justify it to everyone when trying to sell it if they check carfax.
Maybe the cluster was replaced. The odo's can easily be messed with either way.

Cool! I used to have a game that looked similar for PS1. I think it was called Mech Warrior.

You can buy it anywhere, even walmart. I will tell you this, its a two person job and you want to do it inside a garage. Make sure you have some soap water in a water bottle and buy the tint kit with the rubber squegee. Cut the tint to size using sizors on the outside of the window BEFORE removing the film on the other side. Other than that follow the directions to a T on the pack and make sure you have 2 people. Mine came out ok on the PS window but the other one is jacked a bit and the back window does not look good at all. I made the mistake of doing it myself and on a windy day

I don't see how it will help a developing nation... they can't rub 2 nickels together, let alone cough up $2500.00.

Another thing that I could never get a straight answer is.......if you look at a C4, it is really chopped up into sections. If you had a way of mixing the exact color over and over, would you really need a "Big Gun" to spray large areas??? The Clamshell is the only thing that bothers me it is a huge area...but the rest of the car is small touch up style areas with lots of breaks for masking off. If you are not changing colors and only restoring the paint, could you not paint section at a time??? You could probably get away with that if: 1) you were a really good painter and 2) the paint wasn't metallic.
