WHISTLER, British Columbia (AP)

An Olympic official with direct knowledge of the situation says a men's luger from the country of Georgia has died after a training crash.

Nodar Kumaritashvili.
Richard Heathcote

The official told The Associated Press that the International Olympic Committee received confirmation of Nodar Kumaritashvili's death. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the luger's family hadn't been notified yet.

An official statement was to be released soon.

Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled near the finish Friday, went over the track wall and struck an unpadded steel pole near the finish line at Whistler Sliding Center.

A very unfortunate incident. I think you have to have a screw loose to partake in some of those sports. Probably a good thing that it wasn't a Toyota luge.

They might have to postpone the opening ceremonies since all of the olympic officials are out wrapping and padding poles. The picture on the internet shows him in the air well above the track just as his head is hitting the pole.

To be serious it is a shame to see a young athlete die under any circumstances. Condolences to his loved ones.

But they don't have steel poles in the runoff area at moto GP tracks.

But they do in the canyons where the sportriders run just as they have trees on ski sloped that kill many each year.

Just as they have those big metal thingys that bang into each other and kill close to 100 people every day.

They spent 100 million on this thing. Took what, years to build ? I guess they sent the maintenance man to home depot and put up a plywood wall. Overnight. Brilliant. At least it may save a life.
