...before it even started.

Car is too low to fit on his new roller dyno. They tried, it was painful to watch. Now I have to either raise it or find a different shop. Sigh. He was doing such a good (bad) job of smogging it before and not really checking anything visually, but it passes the sniffer every time.

Well, good luck.

But it's F...kin' insane that you have to dyno a car for smog, especially when it passes a sniffer.

Just another form of taxation.

My daughter is living in Boulder, Co. There is a $25 fee to have the car checked.

He lives in California. He's lucky they haven't passed legislation to have his car taken away and crushed.

Smog here is about $50 now. And if you get flagged you may have to go every year. Even the new cars that are smog exempt are required to pay a "smog abatement fee". They get you coming and going.

When I took mine in, the computer kept dicking up and he couldn't get a decent reading on anything. He became frustrated and pressed a key on the keyboard and I got a PASS

The dyno IS the sniffer. In CA (and the states that now follow CA emissions) they put it on the dyno at 15 and 25 mph. The sniffer is attached and they capture the results.

What is the cutoff date? 1967 ?

MA had smog, and abolished it the year I moved to NH. The emissions dyno and all that. They determined that the costs involved with the testing far exceeded any benefit in emissions reduction because the limited amount of pre obdII cars.

What is interesting, is that they also set a rolling point of non compliance for OBD-II cars. In 2008, a 1996 or newer car had to pass. 2009, it was 1997, and now 2010 it's 1998. So now early LS1 cars are even exempt from the 'check engine' or OBD-II check..

Yeah, 1975 is the last year that is smog exempt. And diesels and bikes (so far). In some of the less populated counties, smog is still only required on change of ownership.

Not bad.

No opacity test for diesels? odd. Mass has that.

You forgot to install those hydraulics vato.

My daily driver with 290K failed for the first time as a "Gross Polluter". That earned me a permanent spot on their shit list as long as I own the car. I can only test at one of these from here on. There are only a few of them and their speciality is being extra pricks about everything.

Fixed it myself and these where the results.

http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/2474/smoga.jpg

You would think that with these kind of numbers on a car with 290K on the original motor it would shut them up for a while, or get them off my back. I can no longer use my shop of choice that I've been using since '04.

Could have been worse though. Here they used to switch you from biannual smog to yearly from what they told me.

Stopping the exempt roll up and making it fixed at '75 pissed of a lot a lot of people for sure.

In contrast when I lived in NC, all they cared about was that my horn, wipers, and turn signals worked.

CA has even come up with some crazy remote checkpoint machines to set up roadside at random locations in order to catch people. Crazy bastards.

Mine was crazy low, it was the width of my fist from the ground up to the bottom of the oil pan,,,,

I got tired of worrying about clearance on speed bumps and dips and dead animals in the road,,, etc.

I went out a couple of months ago and dialed it up and inch all around..

+1 for coilovers

CC, Will it pass at a "Test only"??

The one I use has the rollers that go down into the ground.....when rolling onto them...it is almost completely flat.

This was a test only. I raised the back end up and went back. Raising it was a bitch because the rear bolt threads fill with dirt and can't be tightened unless you remove them from the car and scrape the threads clean. Of course then my oil cooler hose decided to pop the day before, it was spitting coolant all over his shop, lol.

I was under the car today and saw that both my front spring wedges have squirted halfway out AGAIN. I'll try gluing them to the frame next time. Hopefully the spring is ok.

What triggers gross polluter status? Several fails? Or does it have to fail really bad once?

Any one time that you fail by about 2-3 times the max limit of that particular vehicle apperently. A new field labeled "GP" appeared on my sheet in place of "average" as seen in the before readings. Still had to pay the smog fee there, and again at a Gold Shield. Like you said, they get you coming and going.

This was the same place back in '03 where I had to deal with some clueless dipshit who tried to fail the vette visually, claiming that I had capped off a fitting on my original unmodified air diverter valve which came that way from the factory.

Lol, I had the same thing happen. I was able to convince him that it's a diagnostic port, hence why it sticks up. I've been turned away because of a throttle body coolant bypass! And another time on my Ford 5.0 they wouldn't let me run because I had my air cleaner lid turned upside down. That is BEFORE the air filter! He wouldn't even let me flip it on site, I had to drive around the corner. This is the same guy that told me he had never heard of an E.O. number before. This system is a fucking joke to the 100th degree. I'll shutup now for another 2 years though.

I did have one guy in SLO that passed my Corvette without even opening the hood. Not sure if he's still in operation, but that's the kind of smog tech I like!

I feel your pain. N.E.Il. had the treadmill, sniffer and cat. check on '70? and newer. If you failed they did a visual inspection. Now, for whatever reason all they do is a code check and sniffer on newer cars OBDII and up I think. My two '91's have no test. I had many headaches and $$$ spent before the change. Now, I can mod as I please. If they ever go back I'm screwed.
