Im getting new rear tires for the street so traction isnt a big concern but would like it to be somewhat there.

I am looking into the 285/40/17 ASX Kuhmos. These are taller than my stock tires and taller than my Sumitomo 315/35/17 and only slightly narrower.

What tires are you running?
How do they handle?
In rain?
Miles?
Wear?

I've never had much of anything be useful in first gear until I went to a drag radial of some kind. I ran ET street radials for awhile and really liked their streetability. Rock solid at any speed, and I actually forgot they were there most of the time when driving around.

I got caught in the rain with them once or twice and didn't have any problems.

I wouldn't expect more than 5-7K out of them though.

I run a nitto drag radial now. As long as I've been driving the car for a few minutes and they are warmed up a bit, they'll hook the car in first gear. I haven't worn them out yet, but I would expect 10-15K out of them.

I had Kumhos Ecsta MX for a while. I didn't like their wet road traction getting on and exiting on ramps. Dry road they were ok. At the time I had 2.59 gears so traction wasn't a real issue then. Now I have 3.54 and it would definitely be an issue.

The best tires I had were Potenzas. RE something... not sure any more what series, but they were very nice all around tires.

I have the Sumitomos now and for the price they are just fine, but I will be replacing them with something different when they wear out.

I had the Firestone Wide Ovals and they were excellent in the rain, fairly quiet and lasted over 30K miles.

My mom has a 2002 WS6 Trans-Am with a Vortech S/C on it. She runs the Firestone Wide Ovals in a 275/40-17, and I can second that they are great all around tires.

They will almost hook it in first gear (475 RWHP), are quiet, and were good for 20K or so on her car. No problems with wet traction.

If you are opposed to a drag radial, they would be a good choice. Goodyear makes a couple great offerings as well.

Ill look into the firestones. My sumitomos got a lil under 14k on them and thats all.

Drag radials will not be put on this car for the sole reason that I DONT want to break anything. The stickiest tire will be Hoosier A6 and R6 depending on which racing venue I decide to go to.

Sumitomo = 50mph useless.
they are a pathetic tire imo

I suggest the BFGoodrich CompTA KDW (or whatever they're called now). They are cheap as heck, perform well (including a few stints on a ractrack on my M3). THe only drawback is that they are pretty loud on the highway.

If I can hear it over my exhaust and radio they would have to be VERY loud

I got 'em. Yea loud but so's my exhaust. I like them cause they wear well.
I run a lot of BFGs, used to get 40k out of the regular old Comp Tas on my Chevy van.

I have a different opinion of the Summitos, I have 275/17 on all 4 corners.

I was instructing at CMP and driving 7/10 I still managed a 2:07!

I like them a lot and I have about 18 months on mine. Probably will get the rest of this year out of them.

Now if I could drive my R6's like track tires instead of street tires I might actually start turning respectable times

I have 18 months on my Sumitomos and around 12-14k miles

I will admit learning to launch on the street probably took some life out of them

I bought a set of Kumho Ecsta ASX 275 40R 17's and have got along well with them. I don't race and have heard they won't stand up to being pushed hard. They are quiet and are wearing well. Cheap too!

315 Yokahama AVS Sport. They wear good, not much road noise, very smooth tire, but traction is a problem. If the car is stock, great tire, but for modified cars, you will find the tire limits quickly. They are also expensive.. $$$

How many miles do you put on the car per year?

yearly I have no idea. Ive put a lil oveer 15k since I have been driving it. will be 2 years in August. But that is with it being modified 8-10months of that time period.

I drive it a minimum of 250 miles a week during school semesters and I plan to drive it the next 2 semesters with no reason to have it down.
Only way it stays home is if rain is very probable.

I ran some 285 AVS sports for awhile and didn't like them much. I didn't notice any noise, but they didn't last very long and like you mentioned straight line dry traction was pretty limited.

I was looking at the Hankook Ventus V12 evo. They are not real cheap and they are a summer performance tire. Maybe I'm just swept away by the advertisement. Visions of great traction and stable driving in wet conditions always gets my attention. I've been on FSWO's on the Vettes, Falkens and Sumis on the 911's. The only issue I have is on one set of Firestones showing some cracking. they are over 5 years old though.. It pisses me off because they don't even have 10 thousand miles on them. Central Coaster once said something to the effect, smoke em up and run em hard so you can get your monies worth out of them before they get too old to be safe. Sounds good to me. If anybody tries or has tried the Hankooks, let me know what you think.

I have the Firestones on my car, and may wind up replacing them with the same. I am going to have a look at Cooper Zeon 2XS, also.

Excellent. MUCH better than the 255/60R15 Goodyear Eagles I was previously running.

Not sure, I tend to avoid that stuff.

I've put roughly 10,000 on 'em.

About what I would expect out of a performance tire. Looks like I'll get about another 10k out of them.
