As the one poster noted, at this point in time it is not personal and is anonymous. The data collected is not specific to the individual just the vehicle data and location.
I'd like to do some more research on this but the benefits for my wife far outweigh the Big Brother technology. She doesn't speed too much and she doesn't drink and drive. She doesn't go too far..... so she would be a boring car to monitor!!

If I ever get a vechile with OnStar, I'll disconnect it.

Why? Just cause it pisses me off.

OnStar could have a fart sniffer in my car and I don't give a shit. They're small potatoes. These cameras that read your tags are just as invasive if not even more so. One day they may calculate how long it takes you to get from point A to point B and issue a speeding citation based on the calculations. Lets see ........... you went 240 miles in just three hours. If OnStar checked our travel records they'd see a bunch of trips to Lowes and Home Depot.

Our rights to privacy seem to be slipping through our fingers. Going through TSA screening last week flying out of Chicago to San Fran my name had a curser on it. Apparently, once you work for the gov't "they" never forget. Nothing bad or evil just interesting how much "they know about you. Iphones tract you through internal GPS in the phone, On Star can tract the vehicle once the engine is turned on.
Flying to LasVegas Sept.21 01 ten days after 911 the captain comes on the intercom before take off that he had on board several miltary service personnal and wanted us to take the aisle seats before take off. We had his permission to eliminate away one attempting to enter the cockpit area. As we moved I was surprised that a good 40 plus % were current of former military. Guy behind me said how did they know I didn't say anything! Bad ass group on that flight, from Force Recon Marines to a female LtCmd Dentist.

I think on star can track even if the engine is off as long as the battery is hooked up. It has to be outside though.

Hey, me 2.
When I was working, I had a cell phone in my hand 10 hours a day. Pitched it in the garbage.

There's nothing in this world that I need to know immediately.

Just don't give a shit. Sound familiar?

Won't track if you clip the antenna wire.

It runs on a separate battery incase yours is dead/disconnected. A co-worker found this out when his wifes car was dead, and she did not "know" her location.

Unverified post from another GM forum, part of an email that GM sent out, unbelievable.

From the Onstar email: "We have added to the amended Terms and Conditions more detailed information about the information we collect about you and about your Vehicle, including how we collect your information, what we do with it and how we share it. For example, unless the Data Connection in your Vehicle is deactivated, information about your Vehicle may continue to be collected even if you do not have Service. In addition to other purposes set out in the prior version of the Privacy Statement, we may use the information we collect about you and your Vehicle to improve the quality of our Service and offerings and may share the information we collect with law enforcement or other public safety officials, credit card processors, and/or third parties we contract with who conduct joint marketing initiatives with OnStar. "

Damn nice of GM to let credit card processors know this stuff.

Their radio ads are the most irritating. If a hysterical, helpless, half wit with a phony down home accent is supposed to typify the On Star subscriber....
