Im in sociology. Shes failing me. My entire class is writing 2-3 sentances when I am writing 20 in depth ones for discussions. I am getting 30-60s on them. We also have to write a 1 page essay each week(3-4 different essays per topic). I write three pages for them all. Today she gave me a 40 on it because I did not cite the work. How do you cite work that comes from your brain. I am lost........She did not give me a direct answer when I emailed her. My other grades are 60s. Any answer to citing?

Oh yea, and I use proper english in the papers. Not the usual way I type on this forum.

I would never major in sociology. I just need the credit to transfer.

The way to cite sources for information that you already know is to find it written, and cite that source.

Example: I know my Corvette has an L98. I know all of them produced in 1987 have an L98. I could cite the Corvette Black Book, or if online sources are allowed, RogersCorvettes.

More is not better. If she asks for one page. Give her one page. You probably wouldn't want to read three or four pages if you asked for one. Go back over your paper, and make it as short and to the point as you can. If you can cram a bunch of solid info into the paper, that's great.

As for citation. If she's asking for them, then she doesn't want you to make up everything you write. She probably wants published facts or opinions from others to back up your statements. Just to show her that YOUR opinion is supported by someone else.

So, if you are using the web, then your citation would be something like

I don't remember exactly the format needed for citations. Been there, passed that class, and forgot everything.

Most of going to school is playing the game. Just keep your head down and do exactly as you are told. By graduating, you are proving that you can put up with a lot of crap. The world loves that.

Once you are out, you can figure out ways to creatively bend or break the rules. The world loves that too. But you have to learn why the rules exist, and how to follow them before you can come up with clever ways to break them!

The instructor is not going to be impressed by your views on sociology, you are the student......remember? You have not described the assignment but it sounds like one that required research on your part, if you just wrote your own thoughts you did not do the assignment.
How can you learn the subject if you don't read what experts in the field have to say?

As far as writing papers, sociology follows the APA style of citations and writing. That is standard. If the teacher wants something different, she would have said so in her syllabus. You need to get a book, such as the little, brown handbook, which is what I used in college for writing styles. It teaches you the correct way to document in MLA, APA, and other styles.

For APA, you will need to cite the author, date of publication , and page in your text. This will refer to your references at the end of the paper. Citations are critical in the social sciences. If you are writing about something you "learned", that knowledge came from somewhere. Track it down. If it's one of the teacher's theories, there's a way to cite "lecture, teacher's name, date, etc" from the particular class.

It also sounds like you need to condense your thoughts. College teachers hate reading extra BS nonsense. You should be able to clearly explain yourself in a minimalist way. Cut out any filler and non-necessary items in your papers.

I graded one of my wife's papers when she was finishing up her degree....I gave it back covered in red ink and with a "C-" - she wouldn't talk to me for the rest of the day....hahaha. Funny thing was, it wasn't the content of the paper that was lacking, it was her grammar because English is not her first language. Oh well.
