Day to day use. Not talking occasional track days or someone who runs the track four times a month. I'm talking the sweet spot.

90% of the time your engine operates at what RPM?

I hit new poll but I'm an idiot, maybe one of the mods can fix it.

3000 and less

3500 and less

4000 and less

4500 and less

5000 and less

Over 5000

2100 rpm cruise
5400 rpm shift light setting

Do you run it to 5400 off of every light? How often do you race?

Is it more race car or street car?

Depends on what heads/cam package I'm running.

Right now I spin my motor to 4200rpm and shift. But you can bet your ass if my hp peaks at 6000rpm, I'm gonna spin my motor to 6200.

90% of the time my engine operates at 1500 rpm and 1/4 throttle and makes 20 hp. Perhaps I should optimize my motor for that.

So then what heads do you suggest jsup? These circa 1985 cast iron anvils with 150cfm are flowing way too much for my application.

Nope
How often do you race?
5-6 times a year or less now, but 40 times or so years ago

Is it more race car or street car?

Without a doubt, street car. Most would have zero clue I ever raced the car, based on it's sound and appearance.

OK that was funny. If the power/torque curve is the same for any of the heads you like up to the max RPM you ever want to run, it will make absolutely no difference.

In my example I have roller lifters, which most of us do, so the safe physical limitation is 6500. The practical limitation is probably an occasional 6000.

Is that a good answer?

Yes, but you're missing something.

Let's face it, anyone who just drives on the street and doesn't race should be in a Camry. It does everything better on the street than a Corvette, except break the speed limit.

We put hp in these cars because we can, whether or not we use it. It's no different than the waxer driving his F250 with 36" super swampers on the freeway next to you.

Even at the track, most people have no good reason for modding their car, as they never learned to drive it right to begin with in stock form.

Anyhow have you made any plans on heading to the track? I would suggest a shift light to make sure you're using everything you paid for.

With the stock rod bolts I shift right @ 6,000

Of course the stock tach is kinda useless.

Run it to 6500-7k when I think I can get away with it.

If the power is there hell yeah Im going to use all of it, thts what its there for. Now if youre a waxer who likes to show off a sheet, brag then thats something else. Strange but guys do it. Know a few with 600 rwhp dyno sheets that have never been down a track in their life and never will get the thrill of putting it all down through all the gears. I dont get that but whatever..

Would you stick a supermodel in the closet and not wear her out like a cheap tool to "save it for the next guy"? I think not.

Got to love the rev limiter on the LT5

It was actually set for the accessories and not the engine!

This is not that unusual - early 1970s LT1s could not be had with air conditioning because of fears that the engine would rev too high for the AC belt/compressor.

Chevrolet ended up making LT1s available with air by changing the tachometer red-line (but nothing else) and crossing their fingers...

Compression was also lowered, and by that time, the LT-1 had dropped significantly in power as well.

Actually, I did that once already this year.... Remember the Turbo'd Mustang that wasn't mine that I did $5000 worth of damage too. I believe I may have even posted pictures of that mess. Maybe ill save this one for the new year.

True, but only 1972 LT-1s with air conditioning had the 5600 RPM tachometer - non-AC 1972 LT-1s retained the 6500 RPM tachometer...

All of the drive systems are from Jones Racing Products, they can make anything work, SM or BB or LS (http://www.JonesRacingProducts.com)
This engine revs to 8500-9000 easily and normally I shift at 7500. The lack of revs is what I really disliked about my L98, which was essentially dead at 4500. I am amazed how strong the LS7 is all the way up to 7000. That is screaming for a 427!

Jsup, been spinnin my stock bottom end to 6200 with no problems (other than blowby which is not rpm related). It has the stock roller lifters in it still. I think flashing to 6500 then shifting to the next gear, like while accelerating, it is fine at that or maybe even higher if the springs are good to keep valve float from happening. Now if I were to sustain those rpms for any amount of time I feel sure it wouldn't last long.

You really need to put just a little more time into your typing. I don't bust on people for misspellings or bad english but geesh, I know you can do a little better.

Do you have the crossfire intake still? If so, porting it can help alot. Headers and dual exhaust can free it up. I personally wouldn't do the roller rockers till after the intake porting and exhaust work. I'd think you could rev it to 6000 occasionally without harm, if that is what you meant by "how much rs". A higher stall converter can really wake it up too, and if it has 2.59 gears swap them out for 3.07's or 3.54's.

An 84 L83 is just not that great to begin with (I am sorry!). I mean, 205 HP is just so easy to do better than today with even 4 bangers these days. I hate to be rude, but, wow, I thought my L-98 at 245 HP was anemic. Just get a new motor or leave it stone stock.

According to my last couple of datalogs

Shifts are between 6200 and 6475
Cruise RPM 2500 -2600 ( cruising speed is 80ish) I believe I have some TC locking issues.

I know at least one crossfire owner running 12's

Porting it is one option
http://www.technovelocity.com/chevyha ... t_polish/port_polish.html

the X-ram is another.
http://www.x-ram.com/crossfireinfo.html

You can even supercharge it

Yea, Brian, that looks just like an L83! With enough boost, a Briggs and Stratton will run 12's. From the above link:

"All the Crossfire Corvettes tested with horsepower ranging between 118 to 146, were totally stock. A few needed a good tune-up with 118. Most averaged between 122 to 128. A few with free flow exhaust, under drive pulleys, 160 degree thermostat & fan switch, K&N air filter, new or rebuilt distributor with 9 mm wires and AC platinum plugs, a stage 2 performance chip and Mobil 1, 5W30 oil produced a range of 133 to 146.

One Crossfire which had been extrusion honed was also tested. It produced 166 hp with the same modifications as the above 146 hp Corvette’s. It basically showed a 20 hp increase over a well tuned engine. The X-Ram with the addition of a 85 Tuned Port Fuel Pump was also tested on each one of these cars and produced and average of 171 to 217 horsepower. That was an increase of 53 to 71 horsepower at the rear wheels."

So, I guess if you want to spend some money, you can help it, but geeze, 118 HP stock? I remember dyno'ing a Firebird with a 305 and a 2 barrel carb and it was rated 205 HP and made 89 RWHP.

Here is a brand new GM Performance Parts 350ci / 290hp engine for $1950:
http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/crate ... ci290hpEconomyEngine.aspx
FInd a used Mini ram or similar and have 2x the L83 HP and probably better gas milage.

If the bottom end of his engine is healthy it does not need rebuilt to make more power. The top end and the exhaust is the restriction. He could bolt on good aftermarket heads, decent cam, HSR or miniram intake, headers and dual exhaust, bunch of other small supporting mods, and make 325 or so rwhp with that stock bottom end. Just depends on how much he wants to spend and what he wants to do with the car. Or he could do the right heads/cam to work with a severely ported crossfire intake and have horsepower likely in the mid 200's at the wheels with alot more torque than that, and have less money in it. And who doesn't like the underhood look of a crossfire??? It all depends on money to be spent and uses of the car.

Gary don't bring your hatred of early C4's over here.

That's not helpful at all to the OP.

I like C4's! I just think the L83 is not worth putting any money into. I mean 120 RWHP is not much by today's standards, and certainly not up to the pre or post Corvette engines.

Which link is that from? A bunch of unmaintained 305 firebirds?

My '85 will probably barely put down 200 hp.

You really need to put just a little more time into your typing. I don't bust on people for misspellings or bad english but geesh, I know you can do a little better.

Fixed it.

Well, we have 2 things in common.

Maybe pick up 10 or so hp with 1.6 rollers, closer to 20 if you port the intake and do headers/dual exhaust.

See above posts

I guess we only have 2 things in common, not 3. That feeling will go away, and you will need 100 hp increases to make the feeling come back. It will last 6 months, then you will need another 100 hp increase to get your fix.
