I use 87 in my Vette right now but the new engine will require 91 or maybe even 93.

Nothing but good old fashion 93 octane!

It makes pretty decent gas mileage until I put my foot through the floor, and with the DB built motor that's pretty hard not to do..........

I use 93. I've put in 87 before it ran fine, but it seems smoother with the 93.

welp... lets see... I use 91. That's the best that I can get here in CA. And it's fine.

As for the your 427... I don't think you need 110!! Even with lead, you don't need that much. On the flip side, if all you do is drive it 1500 miles a year (collector car and all) then by all means, put that in it. It won't hurt and some of the options are more aimed at regular usage. I would run 93 in it with a lead additive. The 400hp version of the 427 wasn't high compression. It should deal ok with 93. It wasn't until you got to the 435hp version (L71) and the L88 that 103 was required.

psycovette - I would think you're engine is seriously carboned up. Have you tried seafoam? It might just clean up the problem. There is no reason for that engine to ping on 87. Check your timing, too.

As an aside, what does octane do? The higher the number, essentially, the less volatile it is. It's that simple. The less volatile, the less prone to uncontrolled combustion. The flame front can be more intense and longer burning with higher octane. 87 will pop and be gone... 93 will pop and linger. Either way, it's a blink of a blink of a blink of a blink of an eye.

Putting higher octane will only give you the power the engine was designed to give, as long as the engine was designed to work with it.

Depends on the compression.

If it's original, or built to original specs, then yes it does.

I agree, something's off if you're pinging. I seem to remember the engine but if you could give us some details that would help. Maybe start a thread about that in tech and we'll pick it apart and figure out the problem and hopefully a solution.

I pretty much agree with Andy. If the C/Rs are the same in the C3 as a C2, it's interesting that the C/R isn't that much greater, it's 10.25 to 1 for the 400 and 11.0 for the 435, also interesting to note is that the 300 horse SBC had 10.25 while the 350 horse had 11.0. ( the L88 had 12.0)

Nobody I know runs 110 in a 350 horse. I think it would be fine with the 93 and lead add if there's minimal carbon buildup and the timing's not jacked.

Second on the seafoam.

BTW, I run 89 in the LT1 all the time and at high altitude with zero ping.

93...I have a gas card that gives me a discount so it's the same price as regular at most places. It is doing no harm so it really doesn't matter either way. It gives me no advantage with the little horsepower my car makes. Oh well...

Another reason I forgot to mention is 87-93 octane pump gas has 10 percent ethanol. I know ethanol burns hotter and I just wouldn't feel good if I put it into the tank. I guess I am paying extra for piece of mind.

Your peace of mind is what's most important.

We usually have the ethanol mix here too, but I'm running it in a 10.2 LT1.

What are you paying for 110? Here, at the racetracks, leaded is $7.50/gal or higher.
We also can get 100 leaded here.

Many years ago, I ran my '63, 360 HP all the time on pump gas (leaded hi test) which was maybe 93 - 95 octane. I ran it that way 4 years as a daily driver and pulled the motor apart w/ no evidence of preignition. 11.25 C/R.

LTX cars are reverse cooled so we can get away with a higher compression.

We also have a knock sensor that backs the timing off.

Yea but the compression's not really that high.

The knock sensors and O2 sensors let me run the 89 even at high altitude.

I am paying 8.50 a gallon but I put about 300 miles on the car last year. To top it off it got about 17 miles per gallon

Ah hell, for $150 a year, you can run it.

Must be hard to only run 300 mi. with a car like that!

I run 93 in mine,(10 to 1 CR) but one of my buddies runs the 110 and just filled up for 4.00 a gallon. He was so excited he took a 55-gallon drum back to fill up for later. Last year he was paying close to 10.00 a gallon.
