GM is under the gun in an effort to rebrand itself as America's car company in a world where the government owns a significant portion of the automaker.

The New York Times reports that in an effort to "present a consistent brand message," GM has sent out a memo asking Chevrolet dealers and employees to quit using the classic term "Chevy."

This is silly and pointless, and screams "marketing consultants are spending too much tax money," but whatever, we hope it works. (via Jonathan Miller)

NYT: “We’d ask that whether you’re talking to a dealer, reviewing dealer advertising, or speaking with friends and family, that you communicate our brand as Chevrolet moving forward,” said the memo, which was signed by Alan Batey, vice president for Chevrolet sales and service, and Jim Campbell, the G.M. division’s vice president for marketing.

I sent them an email saying that I own 2 Chevy Corvettes and a Chevy Silverado. And that I was going to the local Chevy dealership today to look at new Chevy trucks. But maybe I'l just harass the salesman by using Chevy in every sentence.
Or walk across the street and see if the Dodge Ram salesguys are offended by the word Mopar.

Yea, I have nothing better to do right now.

Quote:
From racetracks in the heartland to the iconic strains of “American Pie,” one word--Chevy--has transcended class and culture and helped raise the bow-tie brand to the lofty status as one of the most recognized in the world.

But now, one of the most blue-collar and singularly American marques is going formal: General Motors has told its employees to use the world “Chevrolet” instead of the commonly used “Chevy” nickname. An internal memo distributed this week directs workers to use the official name in all communications, from official duties to simple conversations.

The reason for the change is the emerging global presence of the Chevrolet brand. It's sold in more than 130 countries, and spokesman Klaus-Peter Martin said the brand is looking for greater consistency in its messages.

No immediate changes are expected in advertising or other communications.

There is no time line for a phase-in of the change. On Chevrolet.com, the word Chevy still appeared prominently on Thursday morning, including a statement stripped across the middle reading, “Over 1,000 people a day switch to Chevy.”

“Chevrolet has grown over the past several years and become a truly global brand,” Martin said.

That being said, “Chevy” is not going anywhere. The memo was an internal note telling employees what to say, and Martin said the company is more than happy for the general public to refer to the brand however it wants. Chevy, like Coke for Coca-Cola, has become embeded in the public vernacular.

“We're not trying to kill Chevy,” he said.

Chevrolet was founded in 1911 by race-car driver Louis Chevrolet and GM founder William Durant, and the iconic bow-tie emblem appeared shortly thereafter. The brand has consistently been GM's best-selling division for decades and one of the top sellers in the nation, vying with Ford and Toyota for the individual-brand sales crown.

“There is nothing wrong with being called Chevy,” Martin said. “It's a nickname. It's in our history. It's in our fabric. We love it.”

Chevrolet, of course, is just as familiar to car fans as Chevy. Dinah Shore famously sang “See the U.S.A. in your Chevrolet,” and another memorable ad pitched “baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet.”

GM subsequently issued a statement on the controversy. It reads:

Today's emotional debate over a poorly worded memo on our use of the Chevrolet brand is a good reminder of how passionately people feel about Chevrolet. It is a passion we share and one we do not take for granted.

We love Chevy. In no way are we discouraging customers or fans from using the name. We deeply appreciate the emotional connections that millions of people have for Chevrolet and its products.

In global markets, we are establishing a significant presence for Chevrolet, and need to move toward a consistent brand name for advertising and marketing purposes. The memo in question was one step in that process.

We hope people around the world will continue to fall in love with Chevrolets and smile when they call their favorite car, truck or crossover “Chevy.”

Uh, Bill? You know it's just "Ram" now. The trucks have been spun off to be their own brand, Dodge is just cars.

Seems kinda ironic in light of this thread, doesn't it?

Speaking of stupid American car sales, I saw an ad for a 2010 Mustang GT for $240 a month (lease) with about $2k down. Apparently they're trying to get rid of the '10's since the 11's have the new 410 HP motor. It seems like a cheap daily driver so I go to the dealer to take a look, ready for the fine print. Usually the car in the ad is the NO option special, and they get you into a pricier model. Well, I figure that all I need is a V8 and a 5-speed, the GT already comes standard with Sync and all the power options so "base" model car is fine with me.

But when he tells me they don't even have any cars on the lot as called out in their own ad (and not because they sold them all) I start to get irritated. Then he finds one, it stickers at $34k and he can sell it to me at X-plan for about $32k. How that works out to $240 a month I'm still trying to figure out. Needless to say, none of these $240 a month cars have materialized...

No wonder nobody wants to buy AMerican cars when they're still pulling this bait and switch BULLSHIT.

Needless to say I was angry.

I am sure these billboards were created by Campbell-Ewald... which was shit-canned last month after 90 years of being the exclusive ad firm for Chevy.

So, I sent them an email on 6/10 with Chevy in every sentence.
Today they responded, with a regular promo email of course. Every thing in the email and brochure said Chevy.

And I see an ad on TV today, everything in the add printed or stated was Chevy.

I'm so proud that my one email changed all of GM's advertising.

Once a year or so, I'll stop at a stealership and harass the sales guys by playing "buyer" and messing with them about these sales. Makes for a fun half hour.

I have occasionally found the bait and switch car on the lot. They usually sucked so bad I wouldn't buy it at a discounted discount. I usually give them the "Do you know what I can buy for that kind of money?" line. Then I give some examples. They just look at me ......

Ha, my last one - looking at a 2009 P/U. Sales guy says: "You know, this truck's going to sell fast, won't last long."
This is on a mile long street in Reno that's all dealsrships and used car lots.
I asked him "How many used pickups do you think are for sale on this street?" - Blank Stare
