I brought her home today in pouring rain! As soon as I got her into the garage, unwrapped and dried off the sun came out! Go figure. I'm moving it over to an engine stand tomorrow and will get all the accessories installed and hopefully drop it in the the car later in the week or next weekend.

Why rush? Get the right gaskets, you're not dropping the engine tomorrow...

The gasket may work, I don't know...

Nahh... I remembered why they were on the shelf. I read here and on CF that the copper gaskets leak badly after a while. I used FELPRO 1406 last time and they worked great. I'll pick up a set after work on Wednesday at Speed Unlimited. That's a local speed shop just across the street from work.

Who's oil pan did you use? I'm so tired of my Canton leaking I'd like an alternative.

Also, what headers did you go with? Forgive me if it's in the other thread...

No problem Jon,

I went with the Champs Racing Pans, Road Racing version. I can get the model number for you if you need it. Will installed this on Nolands Corvette with no problems so I hope it doesn't give me any clearance issues. Mine didn't leak during the run-in, but I did notice they used RTV on the pan gasket which I never have. I don't know why they did that and I didn't notice it until I got it home today and was looking at it real good. I need to ask. I hope that doesn't cause it to leak later. I'm always suspect to someone doing my intake manifold and oil pan if they haven't done an LT1 engine that often. I know my builder does tons and tons of small block Chevy engines, but maybe not so many LT1 engines any more.

My headers are Exotic Muscle. They are still in pretty much brand new condition. I plan to bolt up the accessory bracket with belt tensioners installed. Headers, spark plugs, plug wires and maybe even the power steering pump assembled on the engine before installation.

Brad used them before and said that they leaked on him. I don't want to take the chance. I think they are a PITA to change out in the car. Here's a photo of the MR Gasket copper gasket that I have. Maybe Brad can confirm.

I have no experience with the Mr Gasket header gaskets, but my Mr gasket collector gaskets leak. The TPI gaskets seem to be doing well, though.

Well, if you have been following... the engine is in the car bolted to the cross frames. I just removed the transmission lines because the Champ Road Racing pan is blocking the fctory routing of the lines. I plan to replace them with braided stainless steel transmission lines and AN fittings. I may totally relocate the entire transmission cooling to the rear of the car, but I'm still weighing the pros and cons of this. the transmission is still sitting on its jack under the car waiting to get raised into position but I'm waiting for motivation to get that one accomplished. I have lots of little jobs that need attention prior to finishing too... I could drag this out for months but really need to get moving. Thanks for the prod.

I would not recommend either.
The factory arrangement (airflow in the front of the car) is the way to go.
I would cut the steel lines in front of the pan obstruction, double flare the ends, bend new lines from that point to the trans case, and connect them with unions.
Hard to beat the simplicity and function of the factory deal.

Pete,

I knew you were going to say this... as you are the ObiWon of transmissions. Well... let's see, I trashed the lines trying to get them out. Instead of forward thinking, and removing them before the engine went in... they got trapped and bent under the motor during engine installation. (I didn't notice this until the engine was in. Crazy I know. When removing them, I tried the gentle approach but it finally got pretty ugly by the time they were out.

I guess I will need to get some new lines and do as you recommend. Although, the local Speed Unlimited sells a nice Teflon lined kit with fittings and enough line to do the job for about $150. It just seemed a lot easier to route the lines and tie them off with the metal wire ties or rubber insulated clamps.

What kind of tool is required to flare the ends. I'll need to pick a bender and flare tool up.

Thanks for the comments. I want to treat your baby good. Its so funny, but everyone that has come over to help me out has commented on how nice the paint job is on the transmission!!! LOL

The primary reason I paint them is to seal the case, and prevent minor dirt and grit from getting in during the build. I just like that color grey, but any will work.
The tool you need is called a double flair kit. They are not expensive, and you can likely borrow one from autozone.
By flairing, and using the unions, you have a reliable quick disconnect option. Braided lines work, but are expensive.

PS: Reinforce by ego, and post up a couple trans pics.

If you haven't assembled braided before, they can be a real pain. You need a good tool to cut the lines or a hi speed grinder with a cutoff disc. And a set of aluminum vice jaws. And to make it easier, you need a Kool-Tool which runs at least $70 (without it it's a PIA).

BTW, in the last 5 years, I've been converting everything to Aeroquip race hose with push on fittings. Just push the fitting into the hose, no bleeding from broken SS strands, no clamps at all and the ends absolutely won't come off (under pressure, high temps, whatever).

Pete,
I'm still trying to find out the cons to using the $125 braided line kit other than difficult to cut. I have a cutter and cut-off discs and can buy any special tool required.

I just hate the thought of bending new tubing by trial and error. The old tubing is twisted and bent beyond use for a pattern and the flexible tubing seems like an attractive and easy alternative. Additionally, I have searched online for places to buy pre-bent tubing for our cars and I have not had any luck after a good long search.

Don,
Braided works, I was primarily trying to talk you out of relocating stuff to the back.
When I make a steel line, I use a coathanger for the template, then bend the new steel line off it.
If you do choose to use braided lines, be very careful when you install the adapters into the case. Thread sealant can cause the case to split.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll mull this over in my little pea brain for a day or two and then figure out which way I'll go. I guess my fabrication skills are not too bad, just hate to screw up a bunch of pieces of hard line doing it. I found a few "How Tos" online last night and it doesn't look too bad. Nonetheless, I'll let you see my work. Thanks again, Pete

Don -

Bending the tube is pretty simple with a handheld tubing bender ($15). I did a couple on my lines and I used a compression fitting with a ferrule for the lines.

Pete - I'm interested in what type of connection you are recommending with the double flare? I have the tool and might consider that in the future if it's a better route. I still want to install a trans cooler.

Matt,
I believe it's called a flare union. It is a hunk of brass, threaded at both ends (internally) to receive the male thread on each line end.
Very similar at first glance to the middle piece of a compression fitting.
It allows for a compression fitting, and is rock solid because of the double flare.
You sometimes see them on a brake line from the factory.

Sounds good, Pete. I know exactly what they are. Just need two flare fittings and a union, then.
