Good Morning CGs!

Well, I voted last night. Apparently they forgot to count it because my guy didn't win

I think it will be a few degrees warmer today than yesterday. Must be all that global warming Al was talking about.

RR#2 is still sick, he was up at night with stomach issues. So since he was up, he was running around banging on things and slamming doors at 1 am....ugh. Once he was back to be the house was quiet a bit longer.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Howdy! Billions of dollars and cubic feet of hot air expended, and nothing changed. At least we still have gridlock. Well, except for here in MN, where the Dems now have control of the house and senate. My wallet is on high alert. A friend said that voting is like choosing between getting shot or stabbed.

Have a good day, all!

The choice was Forward or Go Back. The choice was clear. Florida had no impact in this election. Our vote counts aren't even in yet. The sky will not fall. The tides will still turn and the sun and moon will rise and fall. The electoral college was responsible for the election of GW. Now it worked for Obama. 4 years is hardly enough time for an administration to change much of anything. The Republicans and conservatives will have a crack at again in 4 years. The more things suck the better their chance of getting the Presidency. The country is still reeling from the 8 years of the Bush administration. Face it. The Democrats hold the interests of the blue coller worker. We are still a far cry from Socialism. I would have rolled with whatever candidate was elected. With the way things are going it may be a good time to move to Colorado.

My guy didn't win either, and I've already been on my non-politically correct other vette forum and had a one line rant of my own. My racial/anti-gay/allthatothermessbone has come out of socket this morning. Fights with family and all that. I have four family members that voted Obama simply because their grandkid/kid/nephew wants to marry his live in boyfriend. No other reason. No consideration that the nation has bigger problems to worry about. I need to shut up before I get started again.
My head hurts. Yeah, feels like my vote didn't help much, either.
I guess the people in my neighborhood will get to enjoy four more years of me paying their food stamps and such.
I'll just try to immerse myself in this logo for a towing company I'm working on and a Christmas card for a friend and whatever else I can find to do here at work...

You know the border crossers can't vote. But when their US born kids grow up you'll have a whole new generation ready to cash in on the benefits. Again, you can't blame Obama for illegal immigration. It's an ageless problem since before the Mexican American War. It's basicly based on poverty. Money drives the migrants north. It's not like Mexicans have never been here. There are founding families in the Southwest and West Coast. The Mexicans are not the only ones either. Throw in Colombians, Venezualans, Salvadorans, Hondurans, Guatamalans, Peruvians, Argentinians, Haitians, Dominicans and a host of others. I was born in the cradle of democracy. Predominantly Democrats. I was also an old school unionist. Not only did it give me a living wage with benefits, it lifted the nation. Florida is a right to work state. The wages here haven't changed since 1980. Sure unions lost their vision. They now work closely with corporate management taking paycuts, allowing layoffs, and down sizing. They do it to survive. Fact is, in this country, when you work hard, your a hard worker. That's about it. It doesn't show up on your paycheck. It shows up on productivity data. It's all so complex. I wish it was as simple as blaming the 11 million illegal residents. Marcus said we're dinasaurs. I think he hit the nail on the head. Life was much simpler before all these changes.

I was just reading a short interview in Car and Driver with Loris Bicocchi, who was a test driver for Lamborghini, as well as the Bugatti EB110 and others. He talked about blowing a tire at 240mph in the Bugatti, hitting the guard rail, and having to scrape the guard rail for over a mile to slow it down, as the suspension broke and he couldn't use the brakes. Great quote:

"Everybody gets some bonus, some luck, when we are born. When you decide to become a supercar test driver, then you spend all of your bonus in a very short time."

I'm not talking about an independent self employed individual. I'm talking about the work your ass off for the company mule. If your saying union workers don't work, you're just plain full of it. There are many proud, hard working card carrying workers. There are also the union protected pieces of human excrement that occupy a space in the workforce. Why pay a working wage when you can get some clown that will do it for half pay and no benefits. Or pay a number of part time workers to skirt paying health coverage. More of the new American way. Everybody knows it's the workers that can't handle the workload that drift into management. They make better bosses because they know all the tricks.

I worked for the company mule.

Experience - yea, I had to join a union in my first job after highschool, was told "You got it made being in this union". Went to 2 meetings. The entire meetings were on how members could get paid more. One guy suggested that they work harder and improve productivity, the members threatened to kick his ass.

Unions were very important in the time of Carnegie and Ford but morphed into something way different.

Hard working union guys, yea some. And many sit around complaining about how hard they work (@ 40 hours/week).
Saw a show about a union family in Detroit, sitting on the couch complaining about how hard they worked for not enough pay.
The next day on Ultimate Factories they showed the guy putting wheels/tires on a C5. A conveyor loads tires on to a sling which he has to rotate to put the wheel on the car , grabs another cable suspended machine to tighten the lugs.....Put him in a Goodyear store for a day and he'd be crying like a little girl.

If you want to work in a union, fine, put in your 40 and quit whining. If you want to be successful and make money, work your ass off and don't join a union.
If your wages aren't going up and you're in a union maybe you should think about doing something else.

You can't discount independent self employed individuals, they hire boat loads of people.
And you can't blame a business for hiring lower cost workers. Are your nursery workers buying new cars?

Workin' for the mule?
Yea, I worked for a bunch of companies both small, independent and mega. When I wasn't making the money i wanted, I moved on, I got better educated, I made plans to work in the right profession to make money. I didn't sit in a union hall demanding more for the same amount of work.

When I started ,my last job here (mega company) my first boss said "You are running your own business, everything is your responsibility, you have to make it happen and you won't do it working 40 hours a week."

So I worked 55-60 for the mule.
I remember 2 guys in the Bay Area who always complained about not making as much money as the rest of us, never got the bonuses, etc. I asked them what time in the morning they went to work....8 a.m. of course. Company management was on the east coast and you had to be in contact every day to get things done. I was on the phone every day at 5:30.

Reno was producing $150k per year when I got here.
In 20 years, I only had 2 down years. 3% and 5% mostly due to the economy.
I started at $22k and increased my income every year, we didn't have union cost of living increses.
The guys working 40 hours a week didn't make very much over base pay.
My last year here produced over $5 million in sales and I made 6 figures.

Or, I could have stayed in the first union and been "Set for Life".

You are responsible for your own life, not the unions and certainly not the government.

I'm not disputing what you're saying. In all the workforce there are workers and dodgers. The desire to increase your options and pay through education is admirable. I recently talked to a corporate president that told me "These aren't the old days". High paid executives are dismissed and lower paid replacements join the company. Incomes are a third to a quarter of what the executives were paid in the peak economy. It's not only the mules that are taking the hit. The field workers in the agricultural industry are traditionally paid minimum wage or less. We pay minimum plus a job bonus for some and higher wages for the full time staff. They make a living. What has happened over time is the dismissal of unions. People are hungry and they want to work. If you look for work and everybody is offering low wages with no benefits, that's what you have to take. Just so happens that by taking a job like that you will qualify for food stamps and some federal, county and state medical assistance programs. Education assistance and child care for toddlers too. So, who ends up paying? Joe Taxpayer. Those just getting out of college find life REAL interesting. "Your offering me how much?" I understand your point Bill and have to agree that in many instances the unions priced themselves out of the market. When your paying $25 and hour plus sick leave, vacation benefits, retirement contributions, medicare, social security, workmans comp plus other expenses and the costs come closer to $50 an hour after you add all the contributions, I fully understand what you mean about cost verses productivity. Wages can vary across the country based on the local economy. Is the rent for a 1 bedroom apt. $500,$800,$1200, $2000? Those of us that are at or close to retirement age are actually on the better side if the wave generally speaking. My thoughts on this lean more toward "We get what we pay for." and today, few will pay a lot.

I yield to the gentlemen of the forum.
