I had thought this was a joke but I guess we are not that lucky.
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/aut ... ly_bug_gets_in_shape.html
Quote:
Prepare to fall in love with the Bug again! Auto Express has learned that Volkswagen is planning an all-new Beetle... and it’s dropping the present car’s cute curves for an altogether more sporty and striking look.

The new styling direction has come about because VW wants to attract more male customers to the model. A company insider told Auto Express that the current variant is considered too feminine and needs to have a stronger shape.

Going up against revived classics such as the MINI and Fiat 500, the new Beetle is due to arrive in 2010. We’ve produced an artist’s impression to show you how the car is tipped to look. And, as you can see, it’s much more assertive, mixing a coupé-style low roofline with chunky pillars, a squared-off waistline – similar to the latest Audi TT’s – and a wider stance.

Our insider said that the firm’s design department wants the newcomer to have “cleaner and meaner surfaces”, but he admitted that the project was not an easy one. “The architecture is timeless – to make it right is difficult,” he told us. “But unlike with the MINI, you will be able to tell the difference between the present model and the new one.”

Design proposals have already been submitted to the VW board for approval, and these include a cabin with better packaging, offering more space for occupants and luggage. Under the skin, the fresh model will be based around the modular chassis of the new MkVI Golf. As well as the coupé version shown here, there is likely to be a convertible variant, too.

Hmmm...

I do kinda think the current one is a little on the feminine side. Although I almost bought one when they first came out. But they were going to rape me SO bad on my '93 Ford Probe GT, that I had to walk away.

No, the irony of being raped on my Probe is not lost on me, thanks...

The one in the photo does look a bit more masculine. Still probably not on my short list. I've heard lots of bad things about VWs over the past ten years. Not sure if it is BS or not.

Bring on the Camaro and the Challenger! Even though I won't be able to afford either.

Any guy driving a bug... one word... ghey!
My 16 year old son and I busted a gut laughing at some guy doing the lean in his green bug with rap music blaring. It was too darn funny.

Oh, and I'm very happy to see you've improved your taste in cars. Some cars just aren't for guys. A Probe? Even forgetting the name, no! A VW Bug, no way!

I'm guilty too... I had a Sunfire for a while. Definate chick car, and a real POS. Pontiac somehow manages to take the same platform as the other GM companies and screw it up royally. I will never buy another Pontiac.

Chris....wait, wait, wait....you drove a probe and thought the VW bug was feminine??? Wow.

Anywho, the bug did have a male following. Of course, it was the male who like other males kinda group.

New one does look a little more sleek. Not bad.

The Ford Probe GT was actually a pretty fast car, and one of the most comfortable I've ever driven. But it was very expensive to fix, and I wasn't brave enough to attempt repairs at the time.

Mine was black with a grey interior. 5spd. I thought it looked pretty cool, actually. But you guys can bash it if you want. You big meanies...

The car looked ok, but the name didn't do it any favors. PROBE?! Come on, what kind of morons do they have in the executive suites? Just as bad as GM calling the Chevy II the Nova, sell that in Mexico. Or how about AMC's Gremlin?
We could begin a whole thread thinking up unacceptable automobile names. I'll start, how about the:

Chevy Revolt?

As a young man, I bought a Toyota MR-2 for $17,000. (1988 leftover in 4/89)

I did not realize how expensive a car that was back then. You can still buy an almost decent brand new car for that!

I was a fool, who had NO business with a car that nice. It set me up for a lot of frustration later in life, not being able to have anything that nice since then.

I cannot imagine ever affording the equivalent to that pricey a car now. And I'm not sure I would even if I could.

Um, yeah... I would.

Ya' know, I put a lot of miles in each week.

The Bug has become the "Jetta" of the 90s.....you pull up next to one and your sure a Chick will be behind the wheel.

I'm right 95% of the time......what kinda chick has yet to be discussed.

That "Vase" built into the dash with a bouquet of flowers didn't really help the image did it?

Nah, I love the C5-inspiring front end they put on it.

Anyhow, this spot is valet only; go park your probe in the rear and come in the back door.
