I'm seeing some of it in my rear quarter, rear panel, and passenger door. Can't tell the driver's side - away from sunshine.

I took some OP out of part of the rear quarter with 2000, and got it finished with polishing comp, and some Meg's polish TOO quickly, although I got some serious elbow grease into it. Makes me wonder if it's original paint...

Anybody ever seen factory orange peeling? Does clear coat do the OP thing?

I have had several Ford trucks (new), 2 Dodge trucks (new) and several Dodge and GM cars (new and used) that have had orange peel look to them. Some have it, some don't. Most do from what I've seen with my vehicle shopping and purchases.

The new F150 I bought recently had some nasty orange peel. Even drip marks on some of the lower bodywork.

fixed it for ya!

I've had a couple of Lexus, and a couple of BMW's and my Dad has a new Accord. The paint on the BMW's is just about perfect, the Lexus' were a close second to them. My Dads Honda has very nice paint, but not quite as nice as the others. All my Vettes (6) have shown some degree of orange peel. I'd say the worst of the new vehicles I've owned, my 06 Dodge 2500 was the worst.

There was an article in Corvette Fever some time back where a father and son had 2 C6 'verts turned into Z06 clones, and when they were repainted they purposely left the paint orange-peeled to look more "factory".

All American factory paintjobs are done cost effectively as possible, that means they're done as cheap as possible.

Paint w/o orange peel costs quite a bit more.

Good paintjobs cost a chitload.

I have never seen a C4 from the factory with orange peel overall, but I have seen tons of C5 and C6. Many guys have them "color sanded" (wet sanded and polished Chuck is doing to his".

All paint jobs when first done will have some peel. If you have seen a vette w/no peel, it means it's been wet sanded or polished to no man's land....the clear coat is what you are wet sanding.(hopefully anyways)

I find it fascinating that American branded cars are prone to it, but the imports look great.

My Hondas were all OP free... my 92 Vette is OP free, too, but seriously, it's been waxed a gazillion times. Same with bastet44's 87.

Our Jeep has no paint. It's just peeling off...

Well, when you are replacing the fenders and the front bumper, can't have those looking good, then a shitty door panel to ruin the look. I would have painted the doors.

The big issue with orange peel is the paint. US plants are not allowed to use certain chemicals. Laquer used to come out crystal clear. Most of the panels that have issues are the ones that are painted vertical "hanging". GM now paints the panels flat to help the issue, and the paint quality has improved from the C5 era.

Keep in mind when you see the ZR1 car from Barrett Jackson, it's paint is crystal clear. They paid dearly to have House of Kolor paint it for them.

I've got some HoK in the shop, $250 a quart.

If HoK painted the body only, what, $20k ?

Every new car has peel to some degree. Most guys will only notice it if it is drastic. I've done a couple of completes where I sanded them until they were completely smooth but it is just so much work. If you get the clear to lay out a light wetsand and buff is all that is needed but it will still have some peel.

Whats orange peel?????

Bumpy paint or the paint peeling off, example chevy pickups in the 90's, the silver would peel like a mofo, and some blue ones.

I'm takin' it off the sides of my '94. Started out just the water-damage etchings on the hood, roof, and rear deck, but then I noticed the OP on the sides.

Like TTB said, it never ends...

All production cars have orange peel to some degree. And no, foreign cars are not much better than the American cars. In fact I find them to be worse because some panels are perfect and others are orange peel'd to death, and not only does it look bad but it looks inconsistent.

You can get rid of 50% of it by wet sanding out the clear coat and then polishing it. Or if you've got megabux you can wet sand off the clear coat, color sand, re-clear, sand again, and then polish it out. That gives it a mirror reflection.

After I had my RX7 repainted (in places) it looked like hell. The Detailer happened to be in the parking lot and me and the Manager split the cost of him "Rubbing the paint out"

The Car looked great afterward. Fish eyes, Orange peel and swirls from their attempt to clean it up were all removed with an hour.

The Detailer made the comment that "All" paint jobs need to be rubbed out (which may be true).

I'm thinking that if this is the case, I'll spray my next one (Current C4) and call this guy afterward.....$250 in paint (Sherwin Williams) and $200 in a Detail (wet sand followed by a buff with a clean pad).

Most paint jobs will have it, even new cars. Not a big deal really, as you see its easily fixable.

Some are happy with their paint after it is freshly sprayed. But its my personal opinion that the job is not complete until it is "rubbed out." Its amazing what a good wet sanding and polish can do for even the freshest of paint.

Jhammons01, the problem is not so much rubbing out the clear coat. Its the imperfections that are left behind in the paint that become the problem. If the fish eyes, pinholes, dirt and dust form in or adhere to the paint, then you can polish the clear coat all you want, but its not coming out.
