Was able to to just check coolant levels today (nothing in depth, there one heck of a thunderstorm going on!).

I can't see any significant loss of coolant!, but that doesn't help much because a leak is still a leak.

Thanks pianoguy and 95vette,

A 1000 bucks... and thats labour from a dealer who knows his way round it... I'm dreading that then.

Whats the con's with Bars Leaks, there's already a sealer added to these systems as standard IIRC?

Oh chuffin heck... just what I need right now. Thanks for the info 95vette.

Can I bypass the core by joining the in and out hoses until I get the time to pull it to bits?

[edit]PS: are there any tips for getting at the core or is the FSM pretty accurate?[/e]

I need a bit of advice please:-

I came out of a club this morning and when I got to the car (had been parked for about 3 hours) the windscreen was misted on the inside. I first thought it was due to a change in the outside ambient temperature whilst the car had been parked, but I tried turning on the screen blower/demister and it made the misting worst. I then turned off the blower and it ‘seemed’ (early morning, can’t see too much) as though there was steam creeping up front the center of the dash shelf and/or vent.

I haven’t had a chance to investigate coolant levels etc yet because it’s still dark over here, but the engine temps didn’t rise above normal on my trip home.

What do folks think, does this sound like a heater core matrix leaking?... I assume it is a pig of a job if it is!

My only other thought is a leaking AC evaporator allowing refrigerant onto the hot heater core ?!?. Whatever it is, the fumes (anti-freeze or refrigerant) gave me a hell of a headache on the drive home.

I do have a problem with the AC (previous post), but I thought that was limited to a shaft seal leak on the compressor. I can’t easily get the compressor parts from the US suppliers, so I’m currently waiting for parts from Holland. Could there be any other connection between AC not working and the mobile sauna condition!?

Thanks

They did well and got the #64 out again.

Then a few laps later it retired with engine failure!

All bad luck this year!

When the engine cut-off, do you know if it actually locked up (seized (locked back wheels)) or did it just stop producing power?

What engine oil are you using and when was it last changed? (good quality modern oils can provide a lot of protection under some extreme situations).

Possibly the engine is cooked or a head gasket is blown, but """if""" I understand correctly (the experts on here can confirm or correct me... please), there is a weak point on the engine design where inlet manifold gaskets can let go and allow coolant into the combustion chamber, if so this might produce white smoke and hydraulicing which in extreme cases can produce a 'knock'.

If you are still starting the engine to check things, watch out that the water pump or anything else isn't leaking onto the opti-spark.

Just my (not a guru by any means) thoughts.

PS: Good luck and hope it fixable.

That does suck Tommy. I suppose these inspectors can be inter-contaminating between different nursuries with that performance!!! Good luck with whatever action you take.

If it's 5/16", isn't that about the same size as a tire valve stem cap?. Might be able to run a die on the tube and fit something like this... just a thought.

Thanks again for your advice Bill.

I tested this morning by first cleaning all relay connections. Then disconnecting the primary relay and running the motor up to 113c and the secondary fan kicked in just fine. Reconnected the primary relay and that kicked in too (109c). Checked that both fans cut off with +/-5c drop respectfully, so all looks ok. Perhaps I had a dodgy contact.

I think you might also be spot on about the analogue oil temp gauge. Checking the numeric readout showed 110c whilst the water was at 113c so that would probably be closer to the readings you get on your 92. Okay mines a bit higher at 230f, but I was running the engine hot at the time to test the coolant... will test under normal driving next time I'm out, but would you think this 'seems' ok?

That analogue reading is gonna annoy me now, with it hovering around the low end of the scale... I suppose that is a dash cluster job?

Anyone know how I can I test the engine (radiator) cooling fans and temp sensors?. I scoured the FSM, gone round in circles and nearly disappeared up my own ….!!!. The manual mentions using the Tech 1, which I don’t have.

One fan (drivers side) kicks in at 109c, which the manual says is correct, but I can’t get the 2nd fan to start which I believe should come in above 115c. If I disconnected the first fan at the relay, how hot can I let the engine climb to (for testing the 2nd fan) without damage?. IIRC both fans should run when the A/C is on, unfortunately I can’t test that because I’m still trying to locate parts to repair the A/C.

I’m not sure if this is related, so I’ll put it in the same thread in case:- what should to oil temp run at… mine used to run mid-to-high on the gauge, now it seems to only operate in the very low portion of the gauge (but it does move fractionally)

I can understand the 'babying' comment after all those previous mishaps Tommy... are you allowed to hang a gun rack in cars in FL?

Was only curious about the aligment because I've seen a few C4's (mine included) where the nose doesn't line with the hood and I can't figure how to adjust it.

That respray looks excellent though... 7 weeks AND a good price, well done.

Can I ask, assuming the hood was removed, has it gone back in alignment on the drivers side front fender area?

Thats strange Andy. The FSM say's there is a bleed valve on the ASR/ABS module and it did in fact bleed out fluid when I pumped new fluid through!... oh well mystery to me!

I did remove and strip down the master cylinder. I found the proportioning valve gummed up and not being able to move freely. I didn’t have any new seals for the MC so I thoroughly cleaned everything in the MC and reassembled. Only then did I flush and bleed the system with new fluid.

I don’t usually prat around with brakes or steering, so I ordered a new MC, however 10,000km later and the repair hasn’t given one problem nor a brake warning light, so the new MC is just sitting in the garage.

Just my experience, but the guy's above have tons more vette knowledge than me and their advice is undoubtedly better.

To be honest, the ABS system is a passive stand alone component of the brake system. It's fluid, is separate from the main line fluids. This is why bleeding the brakes is no different from an ABS system and non-ABS system.

This is also why, if the ABS fails, the brakes continue to function as normal.

Correct me if I'm wrong Andy, but on my 93 the brake lines run through the ASR/ABS module behind the drivers seat. At least that's what the FSM say's. This is why I did not want to pump contaminated fluid through it ???

Morning all,

I want some rain!... only a little bit... 35c and no air is getting to me.

Spent a few days trying to find a squeak in the vette, had door off, been poking around under the dash and seats. Eventually found the battery I fitted a few weeks ago was rubbing on the fender panel!... ground down the battery lifting handle and it's heaven (no squeak) in the cockpit now.

Have a good day all.

PS: anyone know how to kill off a pine tree root... it seems to have got under my garage and is lifting the floor tiles

Thanks Andy & vis,

That sounds good. Depending on what was done during the euro conversion I should be able to do a mod to accept 4 amber & red combination units.

Where do I find the flasher unit/relay on a 93?

Can anyone tell me about the standard US spec for the rear lights on a 93 C4. Does each of the 4 red lights have a combination of rear/stop/turn bulbs as standard?

Mines been converted to euro spec and I want to do some changes, but I'm not sure what wiring/configuration was originally there.

I don't know the answer to removing the panel, but my passenger door panel is the same (feels loose and floppy).

I read sometime ago that there are moulded lugs/brackets on the inside of the door panel that break off and cause the problem.

There is a write up somewhere on the web, I can't find it at the moment, but it was written (I think) by one of the Corvette magazine that publish on-line articles.

Good morning/afternoon,

32c (89f) today, so I dug out the house fans. I always strip the fans down and clean em up before putting em away... must have bloomin forget last autumn, so I've been servicing and cleaning four fans all day... I hate that job, specially as we have two dogs and their molted fur gets into the fans.

One thing cheered me up... I had a refund of money that the UK taxman owed me... I've now gotta try and keep away from browsing the vette parts site... what do I need????

Very possible Bill. As I said, I was talking many moons ago and at that time I just couldn't do any mileage at all without getting aches in my back and bum from Corbeau's. I eventually put the oem seats back in preference and you can imagine how cheap n' cheerfull original Minis seats were.

Anyway, ignore what I said, accepted things have changed.

NC Kid, just my own personal opinion, but I would always try to actually sit in an aftermarket seat (test drive if possible) before buying... I really think it is important.

I'm going back many years when I bought a pair of Corbeau seats for a Mini Cooper and they were the most uncomfortable seats I'd ever sat in and (in my case) where a deeply regretted purchase. Perhaps Corbeau are improved now, but I still feel that seats are like choosing clothes and have to fit and feel right for the individual.

As Tommy say's, Lumbar support is for your lower back, but I'm not sure that all inflate/deflate so as to be adjustable. Some lumbars can be mechanically (lever/winder) adjusted, some are just extra padding sewn into the seat in a fixed position (some european made seats anyway).

Just my 2c.

Nice day over here (24c), hints of some showers to come over the weekend.

My missus is on holiday next week... I ain't sure if I should be happy or worried.

Best wishes to all for your memorial weekend.

Without be quiet as eloquent as Tommy, which agreed was an excellent post, they had some balls making that journey across the channel. I was reading that some of the smallest 'ships' (only boats really) didn't even have a compass and were told to just head for the smoke on the other side!. Even Churchill was only expecting 20-30k to be rescued but they got closer to 400k. I agree with Tetron... the greatest generation is passing on... god bless em all, as Tommy say's... from all nationalities.

Good. Maybe they can stuff him down the pipe.

I assume you don't like him Matt. Is he not exactly a popular president (I thought he was)!?

Early reports seem encouraging (hope they can get the concrete on top and make sure):-

I'm not very nationalistic, but I feel a little chuffed at some achievements and history. Even the old 'make & mend'/'muddle through' UK attitudes.

Seems a shame, although accepted that it was a different era, I don't see the same 'spirit' anymore.

Hope the baby feels better Matt.

I'm pretty lucky with my missus. She lays gentle hints for me to do things but doesn't nag... but the quality of my dinners seems to get worst (that's not easy considering the normal quality!) until she gets what she wants.

Have a good day everyone.

Pappy, many thanks for the thoughts and words.

I'm sure your right about it being low on refrigerant, I reckon your right about topping it off to get it working again.

Problem is, it looks like it has had a pretty serious leak and the residue is showing on the inside of the hood (I'll see if I can post a pic later)... so eventually I'm going to have to do a permanent fix.

Thanks again Pappy

I worked in the Nuclear Industry for 15 years. Every facility, every system had a SAR - Safety Analysis Report. They where volumes and identified risk assessments and mediation etc. I know that there cannot always be 100% sure of potential fuck ups, but I think someone was again seriously asleep at the wheel! As I said in the earlier thread mother nature will be the final clean up here. No way in hell that a bunch of floating pig socks can suck up all that oil.

I don't know the full story, I just overhead something 'in passing' on the news yesterday, but I thought they mentioned something like 7 alarms or warning indications going off within a few hours prior to the initial blow. If that was the case then surely they could have locked the well down before people were killed and all this damage was done!... not that I know anything about oil wells.

Those pics are heartbreaking and in my opinion it's all down to human greed be it oil co's, governments, et all.

Well sent off those e-mails to Ackits and Acsource over a week ago... no replies . Do you guys find companies to be like this?... perhaps it's because I'm e-mailing from Spain! It makes me feel like not dealing with them, but one the other hand I don't have a lot of options.

Anyway a question - I've looked though parts lists and pictures on ACkits site and the drier/accumulators they list don't look like the original vette item. Is it normal to put a different type/patent offering on a vette?

I'm considering taking a flyer and ordering parts without the suppliers advice, but don't know if I'll be ordering the right things.

Any thoughts?

I guess it might worry the spiritualists. That's pretty interesting. They have also found a cure for many cancers (in mice) here at a lab in Miami. Trials won't be complete for about 10 years. Slowly but surely they are uncovering the fountain of youth and finding genes that promote longetvity. Who knows. If I'm lucky, maybe I can collect my pension for a couple of hundred years.

I'm not a spiritualist Tommy (not that kind anyway), but once they start mutating nature it makes me wonder what havoc they might accidentally wreak?

I hope they do find cures, then I hope the meds are not going to be restricted by cost (it's a lottery in the UK as to which health authourity you live in and whether that authourity can afford some drugs).

I was reading a couple of days ago in the English press, we have a cured that is working in humans... to some "encouraging" extent!???

This is a derivative from a 'bug'.

Last year was tough, I had 53 used racing slicks next to the garage that i took to the recycling center, cost me $4.50 each to get rid of them.

4.5 to get rid, I don't what slicks run at, but how much would 53 have cost new... or is that not something to ponder on! ?

Just opened my computer desk and there sits a couple of 5 1/2" floppies... why I'm thinking
