Nice Mustang! I own several Mustangs myself along with the Corvette. You're right... They are very easy to drive and they're a great choice when the Vette isn't the primary/best selection. Enjoy your Mustang!

Just checked Tire Rack again for BFG KDWS 255/45R17 and 285/40R17. Came up dry... They did have other tires in that size though. If you have a link for Tire Rack with those tires in that size send it to me. Curiously there seems to be a small selection in those sizes...

I'm fairly sure that's what I'm going to try next too.

My 92 came with KDWS (different tire, M&S). 25k and 1 1/2 hrs. track time with a boatload of tread left. Not that great at the track but very good in the wet.

I had great luck with the KDWS too. Looks like they're out of production now though... I would have bought another set.

Agreed! Personally I don't have any problem with the C6 interior. I'm glad the budget went to the engineering and the performance of the C6 first and a Gucci interior second. For the price you can't beat the value of the C6 stacked up against any other sports car. JMHO...

I use one in all of my cars. Living here in Las Vegas it's almost a requirement to use one. All of my windows tinted too. I find the sun shade and high quality window tint defintely helps protect the interior from the sun and keeps the temperature down. I also use a slip on removable cloth steering wheel cover. You haven't felt pain until you try to grab a steering wheel that's been exposed to 120 degree temperatures. I bought my fold up windshield sunshade from Zip. It works well and fits great. There's a new tint called Solar Gard Ultra Performance: Peformance Series. It's actually a clear tint that can even be applied to the windshield and works great while protecting the interior and dash from sun damage.

I've decided to do a brake job on my 96 C4 with 53K miles this week. This is the first time I've done a brake job in quite awhile. I bought OEM pads for the job. One question... Can the brake rotors on a C4 front and rear be turned/refinished? It looks like my front left rotor definitely needs to be turned or replaced. I can see a slight gouge on the inside of the rotor surface. This is the first brake job this C4 has ever had. Any suggestions/tips to go along with this task would be appreciated.

It's a 96 LT1 stock 52K. It started leaking right between the middle two cylinders. Caught it early fortunately.

I've resisted the urge of "while you're in there"... It was tough LOL! Except for replacing the water pump and all the other associated seals and gaskets. I hope it all hold together well. I've never had any kind of oil leaks from this engine before.

Well... My first major problem with my Corvette. I noticed the engine was running warmer than usual on the way home from work one day. I checked it out and couldn't find anything unusual. The next day the engine started to overheat again after I left the house. I returned and got into the garage before it got too hot. I swapped cars went to work and decided to check it out later. I drove it again and I noticed the coolant tank was low. I added anti freeze and took it for another ride. Temps went up and coolant was low again. No leaks were detected and the exhaust/oil looked normal. I suspected a head gasket leak. Did the CO check and it was positive. Sure enough... I had a leak in the head gasket on the right side of the engine. Bummer!

I've been using these on another performance car I own. I must say I was skeptical of these tires when I purchased the car but they have changed my mind. These Cooper Zeon 2XS tires have been great! I've put nearly 30K hard miles on them and I've been very happy with their grip and handling characteristics. They are about ready for replacement. I have not taken them to Autocross or the track however. My conditions are mostly dry and hot but I have used these in rain and I was surprised how good they were in the wet. I would buy these again.

Simple Green works great. I use it on the engine of all of my cars. I find that if I wipe the engines down once a month and do a full cleaning/detailing about once every six months it's quick and easy to keep the engine compartment clean. I never use a hose. I just use rags, one spray bottle of SG and another spray bottle of water. Works great!

The T-Hook reference is from the 96 Owner's Manual "Towing Your Vehicle" Page 5-7. " Caution: Never use J-hooks. Use T-hooks instead." There's a picture of a T-hook on the page. The Owner's Manual actually gives this caution twice on this page.

It's an LT4 if everything works out. It currently belongs to a friend that's going through some tough times right now and might need to divest himself of it. It has some miles on it about 175K but it is very clean inside and out. Great paint and interior. The reason I won't drive it back is it needs an opti. He just doesn't have the cash to fix, insure license and drive it right now... Family first. As much as I want an LT4 I kind of hope it doesn't work out since I know he really wants to keep it. He's got a line on a new job so we'll see what happens. I was only buying it with the stipulation from me if things turned around and he wanted it back I would sell it back to him no questions asked.

I might be picking up a 96 Corvette located out of town. I want to bring it back home by putting it on a flat bed trailer I've got access to and towing it back with my truck. I read the OM instructions on towing. Is it absolutely necessary to use a T hook instead of a J hook at the attachment points inside of the front and back wheels to strap the Vette down to a flat bed trailer? Any suggestions? Also when loading the Vette on the flat bed any suggestions like using a 2X8 to make the transition to the trailer easier because of the low ground clearance of the Vette?

It all depends on how much you want to make this deal. Approach with caution and complete due diligence... Call him and talk him through how to post the pictures or have him send detailed pictures via Express Mail using a disposable camera. Is there anyone else on the forum in Detroit that can take a look at the car and post pictures? It cost a few bucks but I once did a long distance deal by using an escrow account and a local attorney at the far end. I had the vehicle sent to a local dealer for an inspection which the attorney set up. The dealer actually took quite a few pictures for me too. The car was the real deal and I bought it. The dealer serviced the vehicle for me. I flew out picked it up and drove it home with no problems at all.

Hi Brut,

Sounds like the car just needs cosmetics. Been there done that. I paid 3500 for my 86. It has a brand new engine, but it needed paint, interior, winshield, transmission but I lucked out on the tranny. Tires, digital dash lcds, everything. It would be a pain to part it out. I would put it on ebay, and advertise it as a corvette under construction. You were in the process of restoring it but you have too many projects going on and you need to let someone else finish it. I like my black 86, and I am glad I restored it. Good Luck with your decision.

Agreed! Your car of course. Do what you want... I'd give it a chance... Put on the stock wheels and let someone else finish it.

Interesting story!

http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4826897

This is an issue routinely ignored by car owners. I saw a low mileage 93 Vette for sale here in Las Vegas last week. The owner was still driving around on the original tires. Check the dates on your tires. Old tires can fail at anytime no matter how good the tread looks.

How do I get to the Shelby mueseum?

Thanks

Just take I 15 north to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS), turn right at the exit, then take your second right turn and you're there. You can't miss it. You can see Shelby's building from the Interstate as you approach. On your left you'll see a huge lot full of Mustang GTs waiting to be turned into Shelby GTs. You'll also see a few GT 500s out there waiting for the Shelby upgrades. You have to call Shelby's office and make an appointment for the tour. You can get track time from Richard Petty's or Andrettis for track time on the LVMS in either a Stock Car or and Indy car. You can get time on the road course out there with BMW or Freddy Spencers motorcycle operation. For off road there is a dune buggy rental outfit at the LVMS too. If you want to drive Corvettes on a road course just West of Las Vegas in Pahrump NV, Spring Mountain Motorsports has Z06s and C6s you can take on their road course. Lots to do in the LV area with motorsports.

I sent Frank a PM a couple of days ago, and haven't heard back from him.

I talked to Contemporary, and they were not very responsive when I brought up the dual mass issue... infact, it verged on beligerance. I wasn't impressed.

It sure seems to be a struggle to find LT1 support. Contemporary is certainly going to lose business with that type of response. Golen or LPE seem to be the only source around.

Frankly I'm surprised you're replacing the entire engine with such low mileage. I know it has some issues but you're replacing it with a used engine.

You stated that you're going to:

1. Replace all gaskets and seals
a. front timing cover seals.
b. rear main seal.
c. oil pan and oil filter housing gaskets.
d. intake manifold gaskets.
e. head gaskets.
f. valve cover gaskets.

I'd view this differently if you were going to just bolt in the replacement engine and go...But if you're going to tear down the replacement engine that far it seems to me you could do the same to the engine you have and figure out what the problems are with it and fix it...Vibration problems and all. Now if you have different goals in mind and you just want to have a 383 project on the shelf while you drive around using the replacement motor...That's different. You've had a few problems with this engine and its given you the excuse to drop in another...Well okay. If I had confidence in the replacement motor I was buying I'd drop it in and not look back...Otherwise I wouldn't buy it. Drive time is better than down time. Either way you decide to go I'm sure you'll be happy with the outcome.
