Hi guys. I have slight emergency. Battery is bad in the vette. It is her DD. Wife needs help. I'm in Indiana and of no help to her. She needs to know how to get the panel off so that the battery can be changed. Please any help will be appreciated.
She would need a step by step of which screws to remove and where they are. We would really appreciate the help.

Mike and Ellen.

Pictures would be nice.

It's a minor pain. There is a bolt on the bottom of the panel.A bolt by the door hinge on the top rear and all the torx screws that line the exterior wheel well on the panel side. You can see the bolt in the bottom center of the panel but I usually do this lying on the ground.

The battery is also held in place by a little wedge. You need an extension to get to it.

Sears didn't know anything about it. Bought the battery and they almost broke the panel.

My manual is home too. But we all know how easy that is to read. The battery is starting to not hold a charge. I think I'm gonna have her put a charger on it tonight. If it starts after work tomorrow she can drive it to our mechanic and have it changed.

Let me put in a plug for auto clubs here. They are worth there weight in gold for a breakdown. Matter of fact AAA has a battery service. They bring out the right battery and install it.

Based on my 85...

She needs a 10mm open end wrench to loosen the hidden lower bolt shown in the photo, it's about 2/3 of the way towards the back of the battery panel. It screws upward, so to unscrew she has to turn the wrench towards the front of the car. Just loosen it, don't remove.

Then theres's a 10mm bolt on top near the door hinge, sometimes hidden by the rubber piece that seals to the hood. A nut driver or a socket on a ratchet work here.

There are a few torx screws going in from the fender liner. These can usually be removed with a small hex bit, or if she needs more room she'll have to turn the key on and turn steering wheel to the left. These screws use a T-30 bit. A T-27 or T-25 or even a 5/32" should also work, or even a flat blade screwdriver of the perfect size.

And lastly there's the battery hold down bolt. I think this is just a 10mm hex and is between the battery and the firewall down by the base of the battery. Remove that. I'm not 100% sure it's 10mm, I lost that bolt a long time ago.

With all that loose, tug on the panel evenly to get it loose.

And the battery terminals can be undone with an 8mm or 5/16" wrench or ratchet/socket. Remove the negative terminal first.

And for posterity, on 84 and 85 vettes only, the lower bolt goes into a hole, not a slot. So when you loosen it, the panel doesn't come out all the way. You pull the top out and bend it downwards, and there's enough room to fish the battery out.

If you ever do have the panel out though, turn that damn hole into a slot.

Yep. But Mike's pannel is a bit different, it won't have the slot, just a hole and the bolt has to come out. I think it's only 85 & 86 with the hole. Most guys make that a slot when they first pull the panel.

One of the reasons I'm relocating mine.

Going to put my dry sump tank there instead.

So is she all set?

From what I have been able to gather, it's the 84 and 85 that have the hole and not the slot. Could be later models too.

She can put the slot in.....use fingernail filing tools.

Was that sexist?

What I am saying is, it is very soft material and any file can take it off very easily......then shape it correctly like you would a fake nail.

I used my dremmel and that took all of 17 seconds.....a bit over kill

The bolt does not have to come out to remove the battery. She only has to loosen it and hinge the panel down.

Ideally, yeah, remove the bolt and make it a slot, but that takes more work. I think I removed mine when I had the rocker panel off. Can you even get the bolt out otherwise?
