Good Morning CGs!
Well, made a little progress on the floors yesterday. I got the rest of the furniture moved out, cut out the carpet and pad, removed all the tack strips and staples (biggest PIA ever...I hate that job) and even sanded about 80% of the high spots. I also made the trip to Menards to pick up the t-trim and asphalt paper. So I'm in good shape. Of course my BIL didn't get the gun from our cousin, so I don't think I'll be able to nail any flooring today. I might lay out the starter strip since that gets face nailed and then prelay the boards (which you do for speed/ease). Dunno yet. What's everyone else up to? Hope everyone has a great day! Matthew |

Howdy Folks!
Happy Friday! I think I'll actually have a weekend off...or at the least I won't have to be here both Sat and Sunday... Went out to start the Vette last night, and it's a No-Go.. Battery is dead..... I'm a unfit Vette owner, I know.. |

Yeah, removing all those staples is a royal PITA. Good time to check for any squeaks in the floor before you start laying down the flooring.
It was a balmy -5 on the way into the office this morning, just delightful. Hope it's warmer where everyone else is! |

Woke up with that nagging backache again. What else could I do but hose down and wipe 4 sportscars. Wanted to do it before the sun came out and made it more difficult. Today I'm placing the right priorities first. I'm gonna go for a friggin ride. Happy Friday ...

Good Mornin' Gurus
Not much happening here today. Looks like the snow from the middle is making its way eastward. We may have some by this time tomorow. I hope it falls further south than here. I'm going to the Washington Auto Show tomorow. I called the promotion company for the show and got passes to interview the GM reps there for my Podcast, so I'm working on some valid questions. If you think of any questions for the Reps let me know. Stay warm and dry! |

Who sent me this crap?
Next 6 Hours TruPoint by The Weather Channel Heavy snow Snow will fall at varying intensities. Some of the snow will fall heavily especially around 11am. Cloudy. Windy early. Temperatures steady near the upper 20s. Winds NE at 15 to 20 mph. Snowfall of 4 to 6 inches through 2pm. Ugh. Just got the vette back yesterday, now stuck at home. This is when I miss a BF with a pickup. Used to be fun getting out to see who all got stuck in the ditch. We'd at least help them... And I could see all the pretty scenery. |

Got the rest of the high spots sanded down and cleaned up. Pounded a few nails but surprisingly few squeaks in the floor. I'm sure they'll appear once the hardwood is all down
Still waiting for the floor gun. I plan on starting my face nail row and laying the asphalt. Neighbor told me to glue the first row as well. I'm a little irritated the hardwood doesn't fit under the molding. I will be putting 3/8 base shoe over it to match the rest of the house, but this manufacturer says 3/4 expansion gap. Everyone else says 3/8...hmmm. What to do. I'll figure it out. Matthew |

General rule is tha the gap should equal the thickness of the flooring.
I've never heard of 3/4 but I guess you have to listen to the mfg. I did it a bit different because I didn't want to use the 3/8th shoe. I let the edge against the wall loose until I got ready to reinstall the molding so I could shim the floor up to match the bowes in the molding, then I facenailed. |

It doesn't make much sense to leave a 3/4 gap in the starter board anyway since it's nailed and glued to the floor. Trust me, it's not expanding 3/4 of an inch. I'm gonna go with 3/8 I believe. |

I don't have pads anymore. For now I'm using a couple pieces of cut up carpet pad that I taped together. Works quite well. I decided to do things things the right way. Removed the baseboard in the two rooms and I'll have to rip them trough the table saw later to match the height of the other rooms. It gives me a little better gap to work with, as well. Took all of 15 minutes. Sometimes trying to figure out how to avoid doing the right thing takes more time that actually doing it. Ugh. I'm on mandatory down time right now since it's time for the baby's nap. I also can't run out and do any errands since wifey is gonna run out in a few minutes. I feel like this day has been a waste. Matt, what species are you putting down? Red Oak, Maple, something exotic? How wide is the room? Red oak will expand and contract approx 1/8-3/16" per foot of width, so if the room is 15 feet wide, theoretically it could change in size from 1 7/8" to 2 3/4". The guys who came in to lay the new gym floor left 6" on each side, and every three feet or so they put a row down with a nickel in between the two rows to make up for the expansion/contraction issue. Wintertime the floor will be a contracted as it will probably be. I never been to Chicago, but I think that the humidity there gets pretty high (yes?). Well in the middle of summer the floor will expand and that's where you'll have the problem. Personally I'd leave the 3/4". If you don't, I hope that you prove me wrong.

Yup, engineered materials are different. As a matter of fact plywoods are very stable. Solid woods are different. Red oak is one that moves the more, maple not so much (1/16-1/8 per foot). Depends on the species. Out in Reno it's probably not as much an issue because typically you have the lower humidity...correct Bill? (I've never been to Reno either) Heck even where I live (SW Kansas) the wood movement isn't as problematic as it is in Kansas City where my daughters live. When I build furniture for them I have to build it with much less precision/tolerance than when I build for myself. If it were me I'd follow the manufacturers specs. But that's just me. (When I put my quarter sawn red oak floor down 24 years ago I left 5/8" at each side. And quarter sawn lumber is more stable than plainsawn) |

The humidity here goes up and down like a roller coaster but for us humans, it's down when you need it to be. It's usually around 11-13% in the summer (daytime) and can go up as high as 50% at nite. It really blows down the heat index, 80 degrees here feels like 70. The lowest I've seen is 7%. Your iced tea doesn't sweat on the table either Living in low humidity is just great, come on out Tom. |

I am using prefinished red oak.
Mfr states on install sheet: "Begin laying the flooring in a room corner with the groove of the flooring facing the wall. Provided not less that 3/4" expansion space or what will be covered by the baseboard and trim specified for the job." At this point I have not laid any floor. The trim and shoe are 3/4" together. If I use different base shoe I can make it larger, but that wouldn't match the rest of the house, either. At this point I laid a chalk line 1/2 inch from the wall, plus there is a little space under the sheetrock so I think I'm safe. Waiting for my BIL to come over and we should start laying some floor. Well Bill, ours isn't quite that low here on the high plains. 18-20% is pretty much normal. Sure allows it to cool off in the summertime evenings. Our ice tea does sweat a little, but not like it does when we go back to visit the girls. That humidity is just unbearable (for me). Maybe it is about time for me to come visit Reno. Our middle daughter was out there a few years ago with her work (some sort of conference/show) and she loved it.

How much is that costing and how much square footage are you doing? I'd love to put a fake wood floor in. Plus I'm on slab so it doesn't squeak much.
I can't decide whether I should do the bedrooms and kitchen though. I have renters, so it needs to be durable. Maybe I'll just do bare slab with epoxy coating! |

The red oak (real wood, 3/8ths)I put down was $5.97, I got it on a sale for $2.89. I think the laminate (Fake) will wear better. With the slab, you can glue. but I'd look at the laminate like Dupont at HD. Sometimes on sale at $2.50 but needs an underlayment at $0.25 for the cheaper stuff. Or the really nice looking Dupont at $3.50 which has the underlayment already bonded on. The nice thing about the above is that it's "click lock" , full floating. No tools req'd except a saw. And you can pull it up and move it to another room if you want. The only place I don't like laminates is in the kitchen where they can get wet. |

Laminate is nice but it does scratch and there is not much you can do to fix it I don't think. It does go in nice, use some plastic sheets if putting on cement.
