I'd like to thank Don Haller (biggrizzley) and the Corvette Club of America for the invite to Capital Raceway today. It was nice to meet you and your club and everybody was really nice.

I made 6 passes and didn't break anything.

The car ran a slew of mid 11's with me leaving really easy (1.9-1.8 60fts). I could tell the track wasn't prepped very good and saw no reason to try and abuse the tires on ever pass.

One time I really tried to do something on the launch and the car spun the tires, which got me completely out of my timing and I screwed up/missed 2nd gear....

The rest of the time I was either leaving from idle or slipping the clutch from 2500RPM waiting to roll the throttle until I was sure the car was hooked up.

First pass
60ft-------1.938
330--------5.170
1/8--------7.739
mph--------96.57
1000-------9.914
1/4--------11.72
mph--------125.67

Second pass
60ft-------1.932
330--------5.022
1/8--------7.544
mph--------98.75
1000-------9.711
1/4--------11.529
mph--------125.37

Third pass
60ft-------1.860
330--------4.997
1/8--------7.536
mph--------96.92
1000-------9.706
1/4--------11.522
mph--------125.60

Fourth pass
60ft-------1.833
330--------4.975
1/8--------7.497
mph--------99.57
1000-------9.653
1/4--------11.486
mph--------126.69

Fifth Pass (missed 2nd gear)
60ft-------1.899
330--------5.242
1/8--------7.898
mph--------95.69
1000-------10.110
1/4--------11.938
mph--------124.76

Sixth pass
60ft-------1.979
330--------5.108
1/8--------7.666
mph--------97.76
1000-------9.838
1/4--------11.653
mph--------125.39

I've got some video my lady took from the stands but I know Don has some close up track side shots. I'll wait and see if he can post those first.

I kinda hoped the car would run faster but I recon it is what it is.

I've got a few new parts sitting in boxes I need to put on it and some tuning to do before I take it back to a 1/4 mile. Hopefully I won't be embarressed next time.

Will

Will - I'm glad you made it out today and it was my pleasure to have met you! I have three runs on video. I missed the others. I'll get them up tomorrow sometime.

We got all the way up to 3PM, just before eliminations and had they canceled due to rain. So... if you want to come back on Sept. 11th at our Fall drags, I can get you a pass in for free.

Ok, Will

Here is a video clip where I have combined in sequence the three passes I got. You snuck the other passes in when I wasn't looking.

You got to be kidding embarrassed! You did great as far as I'm concerned! I'll be happy to be in the 12 second range with mine! I think your car is got tons more potential. You were not hooking like you could have and one of the runs it bogged on you pretty good right off the start. The fifth run that ran against my other buddy Dick in the green 1998 Vette, you missed 2nd gear. I think that would have been a decent run if you had not missed that gear. Dick has run that car deep into the tens last year. He just put a new intake on it and the tune is not working for him.

That's a fact! I first went there in 1974. I was not even old enough to drive. It still looks the same now as it did then. The Tower has had a couple little upgrades and we got some new aluminum grand stands, but the same old crappy surfaces, same old snack bar, same old pisser, same old timing board at the end of the track. I think it still has the same light bulbs in it, because a fourth of them never light up. However, the people that run the dragstrip are the nicest people. The track is owned by the Cunninghams of Cunningham Motor Sports. Jim Cunningham has been racing for years and Kim Cunningham manages the track while her dad still does the racing and touring.

Last Fall we got to meet Don Garlits and Bob Glidden at the track while they were there hanging out with Jim. These guys are no spring chickens either and they are all still racing in some capacity. Its pretty cool to have a little drag racing history here on the east coast so close to home.

I haven't had it on a set of scales since I bought it.

When I first bought it back in 2005 I put it on my dads Rebco scales. Only mods at the time were a Corsa cat back and A Mold wheels - it weighed 3280 with a 1/2 tak of gas.

I always race with full tank and I've since installed the 4pt roll bar.

I figure the 4pt weighs about 40-50 lbs. A gallon of gas weighs 6lbs, so thats another 60 lbs.

Probally right at 3380 lbs race weight.

So I have a brand new set of headers for the car.

American Racing Headers (ARH) stainless 1 3/4" to 1 7/8" stepped with merge collectors. I also have their 3" dual exhaust system with X pipe.

Not sure what those will be worth over what I have currently but others have reported gains. I know my camshaft has very little split and the smaller 2.5" Corsa exhaust has to be hurting me at least a little.

Honestly I need to get some more seat time in the car. I sent the video's to my cam grinder and he said it sounds like I'm not turning the car hard enough on the gear change.... My dad and brother are still looking them over for me.....

Of course there is always the tune... but it's the hardest thing that's wrong with the car to fix/change.

Finally I need to work harder on my suspension/chassis and maybe get some different rear wheels and tires so I can get more done in the first 660ft. I saw a big tire bracket car run a 10.56@122MPH... It kills me to know I could be so much faster if I had my engine in a race car instead of a street car.

I'm thinking some double adjustable coil overs (Van Steel), heim joint trailing arms (Bianski) and maybe going to a 15" rear wheel with a 275/60R15 radial but I worry about it hurting my gear ratio... I may start with a 275/40R17 and go from there.

I got a pretty nice tax return thanks to buying the new house last year so I've got some $$$ to play with. We will see where it takes me.

ok thanks. i am somewhat comparing our combo's and weights. just doing some bench racing.

from what i read, you have a custom cam. can you give us a hint of what duration and lift without listing all the facts.

Nothing is a big secret about the engine in my car. If someone had the $$$ and wanted one, I'd be happy to build them the same thing.

The cam is a custom grind I spec'd from Mike Jones Cam desgins.
288/292 advertised duration
242/246@.050 duration
.620/.620 lift (1.7/1.7)
110 LSA degreed in on 107 ICL.

Very good sounding cam at idle. It is also very docile at any RPM over idle. Great manners on the road. I can run the car in 6th gear at 1500RPM and it has no chop or cam surge at all.

The air was pretty good Sunday despite the fact that it was 70*F, humid as all heck and even eventually started raining. I think something like 100ft DA. The track there is only 40ft above sea level so even when the weather isn't great the DA still is.

I have no idea what the green C5 had for a motor but it sounded good at idle. The fellow is a member of biggrizzley's club and he said that they had run that car way down in the 10's. With 128MPH on tap it is a very fast car.

I really appreciate the positive comments guys.

I've been racing long enough to know it takes more than just dropping a good running motor in a pretty stock car with no chassis/suspension work then turn around and expect it to run awesome numbers....

Still I am truly disappointed at present. I had my hopes up a little higher than what I was able to run Sunday.

The motor seems solid and is putting down good power at present.... I don't think the headers or new exhaust are going to translate to very much of an increase on the track.

I'm going to regroup this season and focas mainly on the suspension/chassis and see what I can do to make the car launch better without destroying it as a real street driven Corvette. That means no slicks, no solid rear axel conversions, no auto trans, no Jenny Craig weight clinic.

Ideally I'd like to hit high 10's (or 130mph) and I'd like to do it on 315/35 17 radials.... Seems a big task to find another 4MPH or half a second.

you might want to try the Hoosier 335x35x17 a buddy of mine Pete has gone 11.04@127 mph in his zr1 with the Hoosiers. or you could go to 16 in full slick which would give you a better side wall flex which the 315x35x17 doesn't . Corey told me if you have the 12 in brakes on the back of you car 15s will rub badly on the calipers.hiem jointed rear end suspension parts help as does the rippy deal for the dog bone which moves the lower one down 3 in . also there is removing the upright to disconnect the front sway bar which a lot of guys say is worth an automatic tenth in your 60 ft times

Idle is set so it surges between 950RPM and 1100RPM. Seems to work the best for the IAC to be able to compensate when I run the AC and the fans come on driving around in traffic here.

I only turned the motor like 5000RPM on the rev. No reason to be abusive. Like my dad use to tell me.... "thems dollar signs going out the tail pipe everytime".

I've just seen your reply, thanks!
That was exactly the video I refered to. The throttle
response is really amazing.

What revs do you turn that engine to and what rear gears do you have?

I'm still tossing my mind if I should go solid or hyd. roller
on my 383 future bild. But when I see and hear your 383 run,
well I'm not sure that it's worth all that hassle and risk
with soild roller.

Peak power is at 6800RPM and when I really run it hard I shift it at 7200RPM. Most of the time I only turn it about 6500RPM because I'm still sorting the chassis and working on my launch and first half numbers.

The car has a 4.11 rear gear.

Nice runs

I think you'd be OK running a little more RPM
But I see your point

I'd try drag radials over the slicks 1st
With slicks you"ll start breaking stuff for sure

that is one fast car, Will! You look amazingly similar to the Stig.

I am sure you will get the #'s you want, you are very close. I noticed some bogging on launch, too, so maybe that'll help once resolved.

Sweet ride!!!

Thanks guys.

Andy,
The STIG wears Simpson helmets thou and I've always been a BELL man....

I've still got a little work to do. Since then I've been back to the 1/8th mile 2 times and been managing to cut consistant 1.80 60fts in hot weather.... so things are comming around little by little.

I do have one video from that day that the little woman shot and I'm really proud of it.

It was my maiden 1/4 mile pass - where I got lined up against a back halfed bracket car and managed to take him down.

We were side by side until I got the Vette into 4th gear. Once we got thru the 1/8th mile I started walking him on the big end of the track.

Will, I know you have at least 3-4 tenths easily in that set up. Look at your 60 foot times. If you were to get it down to 1.5/ 1.6's you would be tapping on the 10's
My 93 weighs 3330, 396 lt1 and with a smaller camshaft (544/555 230/236) and auto with 3.75 gears and a 2800 rpm stall, I was running 11.6's with a 1.7 60' time. A friend with the same engine, camshaft and 6-speed runs 11.2's. But, his 60 times are 1.5- 1.6 and he leaves at around 4500rpm.
So, IMHO you are easily high 10's.
