I just got the October auto Enthusiast Magazine and they have run and article on the 86-96 C4 No Flex Frame Stiffener Bar System. It was written by Ron Warren... Do we know him?

Anyhow, I found the article interesting and a bit easier to follow than some of the threads on the system found here and at CF. It is very expensive in my opinion but would be worth it if it would keep my car from twisting like a pretzel when I enter and exit my driveway at an angle.

Vette2Vette is selling them for $525... Anyone else try these yet?

It has been debated, and I am still skeptical about the utility of these braces.

The description at Vette2Vette says the following:

"Ways to test the C4 No flex frame stiffener bar system:

Jack up the car before installing the C4 No flex frame stiffener bar system and you will not be able to open and close either door or hood. With the C4 No flex frame stiffener bar system installed you should be able to open either door or hood with the car jacked up.

Take the top off before installing the C4 No flex frame stiffener bar system and measure the distance from the windshield header to the halo with the car sitting on the ground, now jack the car up on either side and retake the measurement. You will see a difference in the measurement when the car is sitting on the ground and when it is jacked up.

Repeat the procedure with the C4 No Flex frame stiffener bar system installed, and see that these distances will remain the same."

I have had my car jacked up in many different locations at any given time and I have always been able to open my doors or hood? Is it this bad on some cars?

CorvetteRon has a bar system on his 91. I was looking at it when he had his car in the online car show. Maybe not the same thing.......

What he said. "Feel" vs data IMO.

Yes, Ron has them on his car and had good things to say about them.

Ron's article was very well done, I thought.

As for the braces... I have never had a problem jacking and opening doors or the hood, with the top in. However, with the top out is a different story.

At the same time, I have to admit, the doors are harder to open with the car jacked up.

I can see how they work... And for the street, they should help... as for a race car? They get a welded in cage, so that don't count, now do it?

But back on topic...I believe Jeff D also has the bars on his Z. He has posted about them in the past.

I have no experience with these bars, but I can see how they'd add some rigidity to the frame rails. It appears to me that they would effectively increase the height of the rails. Think of it as the difference between a six-inch high I-beam, and an eight-inch high I-beam.

Live well,

SJW

I read thru this thread and from the OP kept thinking "Come on people! Surely the light will come on!" LOL

I'm not sure about this forum, but I think his actual username is CorvetteRonw.

On the actual topic, I'd still be way more inclinded to purchase a frame stiffener than transverses from one side to another. (Like the X-brace)

Sometimes I'm a little slow. I have only participated in tons of threads with him and the one time I see his name in print I go blank. The byline should have used his forum name! LOL I would have recognized that.

to me the idea of a "frame stiffener" = at least a 4-6 point roll bar welded to the chassis/frame.

I wish they were in the $300 price range as that is more what I think they are worth. However, I think they would have to help. The transition from the road in front of my house and the driveway is a fairly steep for just a short distance, but I have to take it at a 45 degree angle to keep the exhaust system from scraping. When making that approach it twists the car a lot and makes a lot of body noise when the roof is out. If these rods could help with that, I would really consider them in the future.
